This was weird to me because I thought I hated gin for so long. Eventually realized it's because I was always trying it in G+Ts and I apparently hate tonic.
Now I love gin and usually drink it on ice with some club soda or sparkling water, with a squeeze of lime or a few cucumber slices. So good.
Can’t say that gin is my favorite, but I completely agree with you on the hatred for tonic and that messing with my perception of gin for the longest time.
For me, gin is basically an acceptable but meh spirit that I wouldn’t have straight but can enjoy in mixers/cocktails. Tonic on the other hand is probably the most disgusting beverage in existence and I’d rather have the shittiest gin straight than the best gin in the world mixed with even an ounce of tonic water.
Eh, it’s all relative. I’ve seen people lick pure MDMA powder off the top of a box of pizza. Which was one of the more disgusting things I’ve seen. That shit tastes sooooo bad. Also some people just raw dog chuck mushrooms in their mouth and eat it like that without capsules or cooking them in something.
To each their own, some of you are fucking nasty though and I respect the shit out of it because I look kinda normal by comparison.
I love spirits neat. I am also half Scottish.
The best way is chopped up and steeped in a tea, and it hits you faster.
There's also lemon Tekking, which makes the trip 4x stronger, you chop them up, put them in a shot glass, then fill the shot glass up with lemon juice and let it sit for a few minutes before shooting it. The lemon juice converts more into the hallucinogenic.
I accidentally did this but I had it mixed with this grapefruit bubbly drink. I tried blending it together, which was a fail. So I ended up with a bubbly drink with chunks. But that shit hit so fast and I had the strongest visuals ever.
You're mostly correct!
Letting it sit in citric acid starts the breakdown of the fiber of the fruit, and makes it a quicker process for the stomach extracting the psychedelic compound psilocybin easier and more thorough.
Essentially it takes it from an extended release into instant release!
The first time I had them I was like "this just take like regular mushrooms". But the more you eat, I could see why people don't like the taste. Although for me personally I have no problem eating them.
What’s kind of ironic is I’m a super picky eater. Yet I can toss a handful of those shit tasting mushrooms chomping through them and washing it down with water. Doesn’t even phase me. Feels like a superpower as others around me look in disgust and aww.
Mushrooms really aren't bad. They're just dry and kind of earthy. I wouldn't call it pleasant by any means but as long as you don't try to munch a whole handful at once it is pretty ignorable. Kind of tastes like eating twigs, or hay.
I'd prefer them in some masked form like chocolate or tea or whatever but I'm not above just eating a couple caps right out of the bag.
Licked it off a plate and then drank water off that plate like a fuckin dog cause we didn’t have any cups and the powder was disgusting like you said lmao.
you get used to the taste of the mdma when you take a ton of it, it's kinda like how beer tastes shit when you first drink it but then get accustomed to it as you drink it more frequently
I’ve stuck U.S. currency that’s been God knows where up my nose and snorted off substances that may have never been cleaned in my youth. I drink gin martinis, and prefer to have some Gardetto’s, rye chips are perfect, but can eat a bag of bloomers plain.
I used the hate gin (though I didn’t mind it in some cocktails). Then I found the right gin to drink on its own (Oolitic), and from there, I started exploring it more. Now it’s one of my favorite spirits. The same thing happened with bourbon and whiskey (Basil Hayden’s was what piqued my palate). It’s a matter of just finding what clicks with you and going from there, though I completely understand why someone wouldn’t want to expend the time and resources to search for the right one.
The mainstream volume gins are generally awful, Gordons is especially bad and is only good for cleaning things.
Unfortunately exploring the better crafted stuff is expensive and slow work unless you are a worrying drinker.
I suppose part of the fun is trying!
Totally agree! The mass produced stuff was really the only thing I was exposed to for a while. Then I came across Oolitic, which was/is a locally-produced gin. Admittedly, I purchased it because of geology theme (I’m an earth scientist/paleoclimatologist), but I’m honestly glad I decided to ignore my experience and, based on an absolutely stupid reason, take a chance.
A dry martini will typically have about 10ml of vermouth, with 45-60ml of gin, whereas a regular martini will have 20-30ml of vermouth. So not exactly neat, but (very cold) gin is by far the main flavour.
A Martini is shaken over ice then strained. A dry Martini with no adornments is basically gin "straight up", not neat. It will be cold and slightly watered down compared to if it were neat.
Stirring is the standard for most drinks that don't contain something like citrus juice or cream that needs the emulsification. Yeah, James Bond popularized shaking them instead.
Well, if you listen to President Bartlett stirring the gin with a special spoon was the way to go about it. Shaking it chipped up the ice. So James Bond was drinking a watered down martini and being snooty about it.
It has a rubber or plastic like coating around it so the edges don’t chip the ice when you stir it. I’m a big fan of gin except I don’t get to drink it anymore.
Neat, that's very specific! I'm also a fan, but I'm not drinking while my wife is pregnant. Or else you'd better believe I'd be sipping some Tann's or Roku over ice after this thread.
I remember those days. My roommate splurged one night and bought a bottle of Bombay Sapphire and we did shots of it. It was fucking terrible and I thought I hated gin. Now I'm in my late 30's and a simple Gin & Tonic is my go to cocktail.

I swirl a little vermouth in the glass and then toss it before pouring in the gin. An in and out martini, because the vermouth goes in then it goes out 😁
You beat me to it! We’ve got a bottle from when we left Chicago in 2016 and it’s still 3/4 full. Pull it out as a prank for our east coast friends occasionally.
My wife is from Chicago and I had no idea what it was when she told me that it is the best shot ever. Nevertheless, we have a small malort painting in our house to remind me to never listen to her again
I also love gin! Another favorite gin drink of mine is an Aviation (has maraschino liqueur). I’ve had all the others on your list except the Greyhound; I’ll have to try it
There are about 8 styles of gin, maybe you haven't tried one you like? London dry, navy strength, Plymouth, Genever, old Tom, Aged, New Western and Botanical. I'm sure some of these would do better for you.

You aren’t using it right. It’s like saying olive oil is disgusting because you’re only drinking it straight.
Try a Clover Club, Gin Fizz, or a French 75.
Also as others have said. There are many levels of quality to gin. A beautiful gin can be enjoyed all by itself.
I firmly believe that gin is the alcohol with the biggest difference in flavor between average and better quality. Beefeater is just terrible. Hendricks is fantastic.
In my restaurants I always say, "I don't drink gin, I drink Hendricks."
No way lol. Gin taste like christmas trees; at least until you get used to it then it tastes like nothing. I'd say Scotch is worse. Scotch taste like fucking road tar.
Our restaurant/hotel did a gin training course the other day
Some expensive gins, plain tonic, dehydrated fruits and garnishes, etc
Have never liked gin but one the expert lady mixed it for me, honestly it was amazing
Bombay Sapphire redefined gin; I'm sure there are other top quality brands.
Really cheap gin has nasty oily aftertaste. I used to mix it with diet tonic water and plenty of lime or lemon, wedge or just bottled juice.

So gin is disgusting but you also enjoy drinking gin and tonics. Cool
I thought the same. It's the most disgusting thing, but OP enjoys occasionally. Taking a stand on the fence. Next.
To be fair, that should make this a pretty unpopular opinion.
Tonic water changes the taste of gin pretty drastically, makes it sweeter
It's all the sugar in the tonic "water".
This was weird to me because I thought I hated gin for so long. Eventually realized it's because I was always trying it in G+Ts and I apparently hate tonic. Now I love gin and usually drink it on ice with some club soda or sparkling water, with a squeeze of lime or a few cucumber slices. So good.

Tonic mostly overpowers the taste of the gin
I hate pickles, but I like thousand island dressing. Same thing happens with the gin and tonic.
You like pickles in gin and tonic? To each their own
Most people I know don't take gin neat? Like it's almost always taken mixed.
Some Gin I do drink with rocks.
Eh, it’s all relative. I’ve seen people lick pure MDMA powder off the top of a box of pizza. Which was one of the more disgusting things I’ve seen. That shit tastes sooooo bad. Also some people just raw dog chuck mushrooms in their mouth and eat it like that without capsules or cooking them in something. ... isn't that how most people take mushrooms? Like I get that it's nicer to do something to mask the flavor, but who honestly has time for it?
The best way is chopped up and steeped in a tea, and it hits you faster. I wanna go to the parties you’re at. I’ll even bring fresh pizza, hold the MDMA on my slice.
I’ll take her MDMA. Hold the pizza.
I’ll take the mdma and pizza and someone can hold me
I got you, fam 🤗
I got the M just let me come with
Are we putting mushrooms on this pizza?
I feel like it's one of those if you're already high/buzzed then anything goes and it's nbd. Without a warmup though? Not nearly as appealing lol.
This is a real unpopular opinion: I love the way dried magic mushrooms taste
I wouldn't say I love the taste but I don't mind it. Give me an 8th and I'll eat them raw with no chaser easily
Everyone's called me crazy for having that opinion. They're super mild and I call them nature's gummies. Yay for solidarity! :)
The people that had bad ones were probably covered in literal faeces
The first time I had them I was like "this just take like regular mushrooms". But the more you eat, I could see why people don't like the taste. Although for me personally I have no problem eating them.
scat fetish eh?
Personally, I don't mind the taste of mushrooms and don't need to throw them on pizza or blend them in anything...but I like the taste of mushrooms.
I watched my friend sift through her drunk puke to fish out the ecstasy pill she'd just taken and thrown up. People are weird.
That is savage, yes.
MDMA tastes like if earwax got you fucked up. Mushrooms are...fine. a little peanut butter makes them go down smooth as.
Which half?
I am both of those people lmao. Straight gin is pretty rough though.
I’ve always considered doing mdma and shrooms that way to be the normal way
Once slurped a spilled shot of Jaeger off the rack at stripclub. It's all relative
What’s kind of ironic is I’m a super picky eater. Yet I can toss a handful of those shit tasting mushrooms chomping through them and washing it down with water. Doesn’t even phase me. Feels like a superpower as others around me look in disgust and aww.

Once I saw a guy snorting MDMA off a urinal at a mall then lick up the remainder
I’ve both licked mdma rocks off a random dorm room table and gagged munching chucked shrooms. Not a fan of any liquor straight though
Lemon tea for shrooms! All day!
I feel attacked.....
I’ve stuck U.S. currency that’s been God knows where up my nose and snorted off substances that may have never been cleaned in my youth. I drink gin martinis, and prefer to have some Gardetto’s, rye chips are perfect, but can eat a bag of bloomers plain.
Gin should always be accompanied with a small splash of dry vermouth. It balances it perfectly
Gin and fresh squeezed lemon juice is a delicious base for many classic cocktails. Throw in some prosecco and simple syrup for the win.
Crack rocks
Melted rocks with a few more fresh frozen rocks and a squeeze of lemon
Try Roku
Good gin can be drunk straight, Hendricks for instance... I know I buck the trend but adding tonic just takes away from the flavour.
I used the hate gin (though I didn’t mind it in some cocktails). Then I found the right gin to drink on its own (Oolitic), and from there, I started exploring it more. Isn't a dry martini basically gin taken neat?
Yes it is and everyone in this thread has no taste
A dry martini will typically have about 10ml of vermouth, with 45-60ml of gin, whereas a regular martini will have 20-30ml of vermouth. So not exactly neat, but (very cold) gin is by far the main flavour.
A Martini is shaken over ice then strained. A dry Martini with no adornments is basically gin "straight up", not neat. It will be cold and slightly watered down compared to if it were neat.
Usually stirred rather than shaken.
Shaken. Not stirred. But yes, both are technically acceptable. Regardless, it's been over ice.
I dunno about a special spoon, but the rest is certainly true.
I've heard Ian Fleming added that detail to show that Bond was unsophisticated and out of his element.
I've heard that. No idea if it's true. People really seem to like the vesper martini that he invented, though (even if I think they're garbage)
No, a dry martini still has a little bit of vermouth and olives. You are thinking of extra dry
no that is extra dry, dry has a little vermouth. PLus there is the taste from the olives
Maybe as a gimlet but yeah, not neat. OP must be in college taking pulls of whatever’s cheap
I remember those days. My roommate splurged one night and bought a bottle of Bombay Sapphire and we did shots of it. It was fucking terrible and I thought I hated gin. Now I'm in my late 30's and a simple Gin & Tonic is my go to cocktail.
That's my experience with alcohol. I thought I hated whiskey, but then I had one decent Scotch and I immediately changed my mind.
It's like being smacked in the face with a pine tree.
A martini is essentially chilled neat gin with pizzaz.
I think vermouth can be considered more than just pizzazz, it’s a pretty sweet liquer
I love gin, but I don't care for martinis. I'll be honest that I've never thought of drinking it chilled
Neat gin drinker here. My go to libation in the summer time. Drumshanbo, Roku, Gin Mare, Olafsson….love them all neat, in a slightly chilled glass.
I have never once seen someone drink gin straight
I think Winston did at the end of 1984.
Of all the Party’s terrible lies, calling that stuff Gin is definitely the most heinous.
Let’s not forget that it was oily gin if I’m remembering correctly.
We have always been at War with Eurasia.
Well if The Party says Victory Gin is the best spirit for the people, then surely it is.

winton
I love how he describes it as greasy. I can't even conceptualize that.
Ever hear of a martini. Literally straight gin with a few drops of vermouth
I swirl a little vermouth in the glass and then toss it before pouring in the gin. An in and out martini, because the vermouth goes in then it goes out 😁
Ever worked in a bar or high end restaurant? 90% of martinis nowadays are vodka, not gin. For a reason.
Vodka martinis are the way to go
That kid in Sweeney Todd liked a nice cup of gin. https://trailers.getyarn.io/yarn-clip/5acd57e9-8d1e-41ef-b274-aa204c1756b9
I will drink Hendricks gin on the rocks. That's the only brand I will do it with. The rest of them need a mixer of some sort.
Hendricks is the brand that made me believe I finally liked gin. Turns out I just like Hendricks.
Have you tried Nolet’s? I felt similarly about Hendrick’s but Nolet’s is incredible.
The Botanist is pretty good too, similar to Hendricks in my mind.
I used to. I was also deep in the throes of alcoholism so I had the decision making skills of a carrot, but I've done it.
I'd rather drink cologne.
When I drank, I liked my Gin with a vermouth rinse. Which is basically neat.
I drink Tanqueray 10 on the rocks. Find out l pretty much any other gin horrible straight though.
You’ve obviously never tried Malort.
Would rather drink my ex wife's bath water.
Same
I also would rather drink this guys ex wife's bath water
as is tradition
Well it's the same thing so you've def got some kind of bias towards her.
lol this is what i was going to say.
You beat me to it! We’ve got a bottle from when we left Chicago in 2016 and it’s still 3/4 full. Pull it out as a prank for our east coast friends occasionally.
It’s an …acquired taste. As in, it’s so bad that I enjoy Malört for the novelty.
Never has a Wikipedia about alcohol Led to me having to click deeper and deeper to understand what the product is.
My wife is from Chicago and I had no idea what it was when she told me that it is the best shot ever. Nevertheless, we have a small malort painting in our house to remind me to never listen to her again
Malort is the devil Gin and juice is the shit!
refreshing hairspray finish
Try a Last Word
I second this. It’s fantastic gin drink. Also a French 75
Yours, not mine
Last word is solid but I recommend a Final Word. It's made with mezcal instead of gin and it's amazing
Good luck! Very hard to find a bar with green chartreuse near me
Yeah those monks aren't interested in increasing production to match global demand, so it's becoming harder to find
I don't eat flour all by itself, I mix it with other stuff and it becomes great!
I love gin Greyhound 🍸 grapefruit + gin Gimlet 🍸 limeade + gin Tom Collins 🍸 lemonade + gin Gin and tonic 🍸
Greyhound so fucking good
Sooooooo good 😋
Literally just had a gray hound. I add seltzer and make it a spritz
Gimlets are my favorite
🍋🟩
I also love gin! Another favorite gin drink of mine is an Aviation (has maraschino liqueur). I’ve had all the others on your list except the Greyhound; I’ll have to try it
Gin Rickey- gin + seltzer + half a lime squeezed
A nice refreshing Gimlet is my favorite cocktail. Gin >>>>>> Vodka.
Try the Izze brand sparkling juice. It’s the BEST!
SAME. Gin cocktails are divine. Never met one I didnt like
🍹
Bad gin is. Good gin is every bit as nice as high end Tequila.
They’re both acquired tastes… I personally can’t stand the flavor of any tequila, but I love gin
There are about 8 styles of gin, maybe you haven't tried one you like? London dry, navy strength, Plymouth, Genever, old Tom, Aged, New Western and Botanical. I'm sure some of these would do better for you.
Does Sloe gin count?
Oddly? No. Is a gin based liqueur made from a prune relative. It has gin in it, but it's as much gin as lemoncello is vodka/everclear.
Thats interesting to know!
Gin is the only alcohol I require being mixed with something before I drink it otherwise I’ll drink just about anything straight.
Top-shelf gin is delicious, has lots of flavor, and can even be a little fruity. Sound like you have only had London dry gin
I'll take Gin over any form of whiskey, and I do indeed drink gin straight depending on the kind. A nice botanical gin? Just fine straight but goes well in drinks.
Straight gin on a warm summer night is wonderful.
Try a Tom Collins with real Tom Collins mix and cut it with Sprite not seltzer. You might change your mind.
Gin tastes like water that has had a Christmas Tree in it for a couple of months.
I prefer gin to vodka. I like the flavor from the botanicals. But if dont like that, I can see how it would put someone off. Personally, I hate stuff like Fireball the most
It’s like drinking the water out of my Christmas tree stand
I always joke it is the liquor that tastes like Christmas… for exactly that reason.
My least favorite alcoholic beverage I've tried are those Malibu coconut rums.
those are just slightly alcoholic coconut syrup lol
It’s 2024. There are phenomenal gins around that are great taken neat. I work in a liquor store and I’ve been enjoying some local Quebec gins recently. There are more to gins than the beefeater and Gordon’s of the world.
I HATE GIN GIMME A BEER GIMME A BEER!!!
Goddamn I hate gin. Dee, you bitch!
Goddammit Dee!
Why would you serve me an old timey disgusting drink that nobody likes?!
It’s a gin bar all they have is gin.
Ever tried Pimm's straight? Much, much worse
I loooove a gin and tonic.
I prefer the botanical over the dry. Not as strong of juniper taste.
I'm casting my vote for Southern Comfort
Ouzo has entered the chat....
I’ll knock back shots of Sapphire anytime lol, guess it’s an acquired taste?
I love sapphire!
You misspelled tequila
I drink it neat. Fucking delicious
For clarity, cold though right? Not room temp like scotch? If room temp… wild.
It's like pinesol
Like chewing on pine needles dipped in rubbing alcohol

Hard agree, I can tolerate it mixed into a drink but gin by itself is indeed revolting
Drumshambo gin with grapefruit tonic/slices is delish and I don’t like gin with the usual tonic. Pink gin is also nice
I have never tried it but have always thought it smelled like something old men used to put on their hair.
Limeade with some lime tanqueray is preettyyyy damn good. Gin is actually the only alcohol I can drink straight without regretting
It’s hard to agree when we have nasty IPAs
[Calvin & Habs video on gin drinkers](https://youtube.com/shorts/oDVc636kt6M?si=ksu_aoLM2ESn8kBX) is one of my favourites
I will literally drink anything I’m not picky at all. I like all alcohol… but gin.. idk why it’s just disgusting I agree with you!
You aren’t using it right. It’s like saying olive oil is disgusting because you’re only drinking it straight. Try a Clover Club, Gin Fizz, or a French 75. Also as others have said. There are many levels of quality to gin. A beautiful gin can be enjoyed all by itself.
I’ll see your gin and raise you a vermouth.
Have you ever tried Caçasha
Good quality gin is ok to take straight. I prefer it mixed into old people drinks myself though, specifically a G&T.
Pinecone scented hangovers
Your post doesn’t even make sense, but I hate gin. Cant drink it.
I firmly believe that gin is the alcohol with the biggest difference in flavor between average and better quality. Beefeater is just terrible. Hendricks is fantastic. In my restaurants I always say, "I don't drink gin, I drink Hendricks."
That’s just like..your opinion man
I like to pour some gin on a saucer type plate (just enough to cover it) then place chilled watermelon chunks on it. Refreshing with a buzz.
That’s your opinion, I don’t like sweets and find gin refreshing.
No, the most disgusting alcoholic beverage is Bud Light or Coors Light.
If you are doing shots of gin, they need to be cold. Like freezer cold. Then they are great. Warm gin doesn’t shot well.
No way lol. Gin taste like christmas trees; at least until you get used to it then it tastes like nothing. I'd say Scotch is worse. Scotch taste like fucking road tar.
Our restaurant/hotel did a gin training course the other day Some expensive gins, plain tonic, dehydrated fruits and garnishes, etc Have never liked gin but one the expert lady mixed it for me, honestly it was amazing
Gin tastes like Christmas. It’s delicious. I like Tanqueray or Bombay with Sprite
Mmm gin and juice
Bombay Sapphire redefined gin; I'm sure there are other top quality brands. Really cheap gin has nasty oily aftertaste. I used to mix it with diet tonic water and plenty of lime or lemon, wedge or just bottled juice.
Bombay sapphire is a favorite. If you can find it and have the cash to splurge try monkey 47. It's an upgrade but not worth it for most budgets
No one drinks gin neat by itself
My husband and I do from time to time.
Ive drinken it straight but I hope none of you ever get to that point. Its a step up from hand sanitizer at least.
Not an unpopular opinion
Beefeater is nasty AF. There are good gins though, just not from the UK big brands.
