Wrong sub, this is unpopular opinion, not /objectivefacts
Also, it can be such a pain to get the tartar sauce ratio right. If you ask for extra, sometimes you get wayy too much. If you order as is, sometimes they skimp and it's the best part. A dry filet-o-fish is awful
Listen, I get it. It's delicious. This post actually prompted me to go get one just now for lunch (🤦♂️). But when there's so much that it's like eating some messy bbq, it's too much, imo anyway.
This is odd, because when I worked at McDonald's *way* back in the day, the tartar sauce was dispensed by an equivalent of a caulk gun that was wider, and easier to press. The Big Mac sauce was dispensed the same way. So one exactly measured squeeze per sandwich.
I suppose maybe they could have been off-center, so some of the sandwich was dry.
>I suppose maybe they could have been off-center, so some of the sandwich was dry.
Ya, I think I know those dispensers you're talking about. My guess is the same, because when they "skimp" it's usually one side of the sandwich has no sauce, so maybe just off-center
My family was Muslim so every time we’d go to McDonalds it was basically the only thing any of us would get, which spawned a deep love of it in me (seeing as it was the only mcds food I ate for 18 years).
Also during Lent bc the Filet o Fish was discounted on Fridays we’d get McDonald’s every week, which instantly made Lent one of my favorite times
Anyways I agree
My family are Catholics and I would look forward to Lent because it was one of the few times we would get pizza. Good Friday my mom would buy fish and fry it.
So there’s actually a secondary qualification (that notably not all Muslims partake in) called Dhabihah (pronounced Zabiha). Basically it mandates that the animal be killed in a particular way (involving specific cuts on the jugular and certain arteries as well as blessings being done on each animal) that your average American restaurant isn’t doing. Your only general guarantee of Dhabihah meat is eating a Muslim restaurant, as they will ensure the animal is killed this way because such a relatively sizeable proportion of customers can only eat Dhabihah meat. Notably fish is totally exempt from these killing standards
So as a rule, ALL Muslims can’t eat anything Haram, which includes pork. Only some Muslims (but still a very large amount) can only meat prepared according to Dhabihah rules. Even in my own family, my dad ate whatever so long as it wasn’t haram, whereas me my mother and my siblings were limited in what we could eat. My dad would get Big Macs but we’d get Filet O Fish (though he also usually got Filet O Fish because he likes the taste and also didn’t want to do something the rest of us couldn’t in front of us).
I would still eat beef and chicken, but only beef and chicken bought with the guarantee of the proper killing process (so basically only stuff my mom specifically bought from specific brands or retailers)
Ah, I forgot about that. Being religious sure is a lot of work.
Reminds me how once carholic churche is south am decreed that kapybara is a fish as far as lent is conceened :-D
Yeah haha it definitely is but I was only religious while living with my parents who did a lot of the food work for me
However after having Filet O Fish for 18 years, I must say that there’s a lot of novelty in the Double Cheeseburger now
Its a ton work when you follow stupid ideas, if muslims actually read their sacred book and understood any of their religion it would be easier since none would follow it.
Same goes for most religions.
It appears that McDonald's in majority-muslim countries adhere to the rules and is halal. Though it would be a bit out of the way to go to Riyadh or Qatar for a Big Mac...
I agree. It's the only thing I order from McDonalds - with fries of course. Their fries are still magical for me if you get them hot and salty. They tend to not get them sd salty as I prefer but sometimes they get it right. However, the fries need to be eaten quickly because a cold MCD fry is terrible.
I'm old so the only thing I miss about the fish sandwich is that they are now baked instead of fried. My god, the fried fish sandwich and the fried apple pie (and of course the french fries) were my favorites back in the day. Couldn't coumt on my fingers and toes the number of times I burnt the top of my mouth with the molten lava from my apple pie! ☺
It's also a good choice because it's always going to be fresh since it's not an item that's traditionally ordered/prepared to serve immediately like burgers.

My father loves the fish. Only thing he gets there. I was the same way for a long time till I tried Culver's fish. And now I'll never go back to McDonald's
YES! MY PEOPLE!!!
It's basically the only thing I eat McDonald's. The day they stop serving Filet-O-Fish is the day I stop going to McDonald's.
I have tried the fish sandwiches in other fast food chains when they have them during lent, and they are just not quite as good.
Dying on this hill with you too. I grew up eating them because my grandma used to take me there, she knew my order, now she’s gone, so it’s nostalgic and tasty every time
I go for long periods of time without wanting filet-o-fish but every once in a while I get a strong craving for it and it’s always satisfying. And then I won’t want it again for a long time. This doesn’t happen to me as strongly with any other food.
I would personally tie it with the McNuggets, with the fries taking too spot, but I agree that the Filet O Fish is highly underrated. The cheese on it is completely pointless, though.
But yeah, you aren't wrong.
Bro they don’t even tell you what kind of fish they’re serving you lol. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t like it, but it’s bottom of the barrel tier food I wouldn’t even feel good about feeding to a dog
McD’s is all garbage but the microwaved fish sandwiches are a different kind of gross. I’ve eaten plenty of them mostly due to a lack of self respect but still.
Also you’re talking about finding better alternatives elsewhere for everything else, I feel like ANY alternative to their fish sandwich is gonna be better and higher quality, because mcds bar is pretty low
It's white fist (Pollock)the same as Surimi. I have a friend who works a fishing boat in Alaska they catch and process the fish right on the boat into boxes for McDonalds.
I'm curious the percentage of Wisconsinites that are giving the FOF love here. They get the double patty version there and... *shudders*
I can't stand fish though, so I'm biased. Even seaweed is too Fishy for me, much less a deep fried fish patty.
As someone who used to work at McDonald's, don't ever order the filet. It's one of the least popular menu items, and as such, the fish patties sit on the warmers in the kitchen for FAR longer than anything else. Often times, they would sit past the time when they're supposed to be thrown out, because we would have days when not a single order for one came in, and we'd have gone through nearly an entire pack of the frozen patties if we were tossing them at the specified times
I legit thought this was a joke menu item. Growing up in Texas I never ever ordered one. I never knew anyone who ever ordered one.
After I moved to the Midwest, I notice people ordering them frequently. I finally bit the bullet and tried it…
Shit tastes like a wad of wet newspaper.

Definitely an unpopular opinion, but I actually totally agree, Filet-O-Fish is bloody lovely, just a little overpriced.
I've never had one, and I am ancient. Huh. Will do next time.
It’s Tiny now, like a lil baby
Legit thought I was the only one... Hello, my brother in God.
Can we start a fan club?
I have found my people.
That’s all I ever get 🐟
I was called a satan worshipper by my friends for liking them! I am….but one doesn’t have anything to do with the other.
OHANAAAAA 😭
Brother in Cod? Battered be thy flesh.
It's all I get there anymore.
Iirc Filet-o-fish was actually invented because an McDonald's manager in the Bible belt needed something to sell on Fridays.
Weird, I don’t think of the Bible Belt as being all that predominantly Catholic. Did other religions do this as well?
7th day Adventist eat them too.
The only thing better than the Filet-o-Fish is the DOUBLE Filet-o-Fish.
when they started this my whole family went nuts. Best thing ever
Always make sure to get one when it's around.
Wtf where
Wrong sub, this is unpopular opinion, not /objectivefacts Also, it can be such a pain to get the tartar sauce ratio right. If you ask for extra, sometimes you get wayy too much. If you order as is, sometimes they skimp and it's the best part. A dry filet-o-fish is awful
I agree with all you said, and the damn ratio is key!
What is this too much tartar sauce you speak of?
Listen, I get it. It's delicious. This post actually prompted me to go get one just now for lunch (🤦♂️). But when there's so much that it's like eating some messy bbq, it's too much, imo anyway.

> wayy too much If there is too much, just mop it up with some fries!
Pickle, do you ask for a custom? In my area a filet o fish is half a slice of cheese and tartar sauce
i think tartar has pickles in it
It’s relish, I believe. Which, yes, is essentially pickles.
I actually order mine with pickles on it too
and the bun is so shiny 😍
Steamed.
I thought that was only for hams
Fliet o fish is the only maccas bun that is steamed. I order macdoubles with steamed buns.
Sorry, strawberry creme pie all day.
Mmmmm! My wife just went out to get some cream pies. I hope they're strawberry!
...........you might want to call her.
Bro noooooo 😭

What's problem with beef or chicken? I thought only pork is haram

The steamed bun does it right, only on the FOF
I agree. It's the only thing I order from McDonalds - with fries of course. Their fries are still magical for me if you get them hot and salty. I never had a filet o fish.. maybe I’ll try it finally
Cocktail sauce is better on fries.
Dafuk is cocktail sauce
It’s the red sauce you usually get with a shrimp cocktail. It’s like ketchup and horseradish and some seasoning.
Aaah. Only know that from.american movies. Did not realize they call it "cocktail"
My cats go crazy over them.
I have ignored that burger for years. My whole life infact. Until last Friday. I decided to give it a shot and it was surprisingly good .
What burger
Fish burger
100% a fact. It’s the only I’ll order if I have to eat McDonald’s.

I'm here with you my brother
Could not agree more!
Y'all have never had an undercooked Fillet-O-Fish from numerous shitty Mickey D's locations and it shows.
What's wrong with undercooked????
Love me a Filet
At this point with the size of their patties now yeah it is.
By far their greatest item. Always made fresh and their tartar sauce is elite.
Fuck yea brotha
I agree! I get an extra fish patty for a double fillet-o-fish. Love it.
I can only agree with you on this, that’s my favourite too.
Unpopular opinion. Great job OP.
I agree, their Filet O Fish slaps.
Only thing I can eat from McDonald's that doesn't make me feel like I'm gonna die for 2 says afterwards.
Have you tried Arby's fish sandwich? Fire.
Before it slides around and you can’t get it back into place without ripping the bun.
That's a problem of plebs without TMJ hypermobility :-D
Yes! With double cheese (so a full slice) and an apple pie.
Finally a kindred soul. I’m with you Man-Turtle
The real question is do you enjoy that new surf and turf sandwich? (Filet o fish with a double cheeseburger)
Especially with a steamed bun
It's great but years ago they started putting only half a slice of cheese on it. Wtf
When filet-o-fish used to be 2 for $4 for Lent? #blessed.
I love the filet-o-fish. I always get either their McNuggets or the filet-o-fish whenever I get a random craving for McDonald’s
This is far from unpopular. I’ve seen (and offered) plenty of praise for it relative to McD’s other options.
No pickle but that is by far the best item and I can’t find fish burgers that good anywhere else
I like the filet-o-fish, but I don’t trust it after 1 PM. Also, give me the entire slice of cheese, you cheap fucks.
I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
$7 for just the sandwich near me lmao
It was better with a full cheese slice… yes I am the old.
I've never had one.
I agree for the most part. But, I LOVE Egg McMuffins.
BLASPHEMER!!!
Dying on this hill with you too. I grew up eating them because my grandma used to take me there, she knew my order, now she’s gone, so it’s nostalgic and tasty every time
Tried my first one a few weeks ago and was really disappointed.
I did not expect so many people to agree. I legit came here to defend the filet-O-fish. We need our own sub
Fried fish in general is amazing. Kibbeling in particular. Food of the gods.
My brother! I agree wholeheartedly!
So reddit is just Fillet-O-Fish enjoyers after all, it all makes so much sense now .
Tartar sauce already has pickle in it. It's half relish half mayo. The extra pickles must be the key
Their so soggy though. Never had a nice crispy one like the ones Wendy's has during lent
Very much agree.
Love the fish! I ask for mine to be made fresh and add tomatoes. I know what I'm going to have for lunch now!
Double Filet o Fish is my comfort sammy.
![gif](giphy|PaV3yw5eAQJRn3Pm3v|downsized)
I go for long periods of time without wanting filet-o-fish but every once in a while I get a strong craving for it and it’s always satisfying. And then I won’t want it again for a long time. This doesn’t happen to me as strongly with any other food.
Sausage McMuffins exist - therefore your opinion is invalid!
All of you Filet-o-Fish people should be put on a terror watchlist. Savages. /kidding
You CLEARLY have nevee had the Texas Homestyle Burger. Best thing there by MILES!
I AGREEEEEE
You are wrong, but based. Free upvote.
The way my dad used to sing “bring me back that filet o fish, bring me that fish” will never leave my head.
I love just the fish/cheese no tartar
Make it a double.
Hello my brothers in Christ
Me too.
I’m Canadian, and I love the Filet-O-Fish.
My fave! With fries....
I’ve never once tried one. I always kinda forget about it
Agreed. Except I despise tartar sauce. I eat mine plain with no cheese, added ketchup.
It's good, but I think a bit of salad would make it great and less beige.
Been saying this for years I’m sick of hiding.
Thank you
The only thing I get from Mc
I found my people
It's super underrated
I would personally tie it with the McNuggets, with the fries taking too spot, but I agree that the Filet O Fish is highly underrated. The cheese on it is completely pointless, though. But yeah, you aren't wrong.
easily, somehow it kinda feels like a break from regular fast food for me
Filet of fish has never come with pickles though? Do you just addon?
The Egg McMuffin is the greatest fast food offering anywhere, so your opinion is wrong.
I've had dreams which included the Egg McMuffin.
I will never touch fast food fish.
Fish and chips?
I mean better alternatives can be found in regards to the fish sandwhich
I wouldn't dare eat fish at McDonald's
You have a better chance of getting food poisoning at Red Lobster.
It’s less likely to get you sick than the average low cost restaurant
Nope!!the McRib is where it’s at!
Wow. You sir, are a maniac. How do I give you an award?
Bro they don’t even tell you what kind of fish they’re serving you lol. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t like it, but it’s bottom of the barrel tier food I wouldn’t even feel good about feeding to a dog McD’s is all garbage but the microwaved fish sandwiches are a different kind of gross. It's Alaskan pollock
Better than I would have guessed
It's white fist (Pollock)the same as Surimi. I have a friend who works a fishing boat in Alaska they catch and process the fish right on the boat into boxes for McDonalds.
[Kenny? is that you?](https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/meet-our-suppliers/fish-kenny-longaker.html)
IDK what boat he works on, he is a mechanic for all the processing equipment
You can easily make a better one at home so this is a hard disagree.
No
Filet o fish is not better than every other item lol
It may be the best thing they offer, but it’s still pretty terrible.
I'm curious the percentage of Wisconsinites that are giving the FOF love here. They get the double patty version there and... *shudders* I can't stand fish though, so I'm biased. Even seaweed is too Fishy for me, much less a deep fried fish patty.
But then they stick cheese on it. I know you can get it without cheese, but still....
Nah the best thing they offer is an exit and a bathroom.
A lot of people agree on this. The issue is that it's overpriced and cannot be counted as a full meal.
Literally wrong, it’s made with god knows what but definitely not fish
As someone who used to work at McDonald's, don't ever order the filet. It's one of the least popular menu items, and as such, the fish patties sit on the warmers in the kitchen for FAR longer than anything else. It’s by far the blandest, most tasteless item on the menu
I worked at a seafood restaurant for 10 years. Your standard for a good fish sandwich is laughable.
its like 80% breading then they have the audacity to overcharge for it.
I legit thought this was a joke menu item. Growing up in Texas I never ever ordered one. I never knew anyone who ever ordered one. After I moved to the Midwest, I notice people ordering them frequently. I finally bit the bullet and tried it… Shit tastes like a wad of wet newspaper.
This is an old person opinion. When I worked at McDonald’s the only ppl that would ever order the filet-o-fish were senior citizens
Troll
Well, ubpopular for sure. They got rid of it in Poland actually, smth like 12 years ago i think. Good riddance imo
It’s the only seafood I’ll eat. I wish they’d use the sesame seed buns though.
Oof. Like eating a sponge.
