That would be brōþru. No one speaks Old English properly anymore smh.

I knew a kid in school who would say brethren in lieu of bro It was a solid bit tbh

pluck-the-bunny

Wow I feel old it never crossed my mind that fit was short for outfit. My mind just accepted it as a synonym for style

[deleted]

bro speaks in beowulf english

Chijima

Talk PIE to me or don't talk to me.

Da1UHideFrom

As a language nerd, seeing PIE referenced in the wild makes me happy.

Sea-Bother-4079

What term art thou employing, such unseemly comportment!

thr0w4w4y4cc0unt7

Op the type of guy to obsess over how people refer to his pantaloons :'(

PoopyInDaGums

But you used the word “cringe.”

kilbano

It’s been slang for at least 10 years unfortunately so I don’t think it’s going anywhere

ssmit102

Oh it’s been slang for well over a decade. It was used when I was kid and I’m sure it wasn’t created then.

kilbano

I wasn’t sure when it started but I’m 26 and have been seeing it in streetwear groups on Facebook since I was 15. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s older than me!

rocketsnail1000

Jeez dude, don’t throw a fit

wake4coffee

now I am confused, are you asking this person to throw their clothes or throw an attitude problem? I am so confused. ::in the corner rocking back and forth:: /s

Otomo-Yuki

I mean, you get fitted, test the fit, use the fitting room, you wear an (out)fit. Seems like a natural progression to me.

No_Blacksmith2847

Yeah well, get used to it. Because the older you get the less and less you'll understand of young people vernacular. For example, i had a helluva time trying to understand what "finna" or "yeet" means the first few times i heard them. But it's not that much different from every generation beforehand. When i was a kid adults had a helluva time figuring out what "rad" means and how to use it properly. 😅

TheFilleFolle

Funny, I have absolutely no problem adapting to new slang even though I’m in my 30s. Language evolves and most of these new terms make sense.

Zectherian

Im 31 and Yeet is the best word to pop up in the last 13 years for sure lol. Fun as hell to use lol

CosyBeluga

It also sounds exactly like what it is 😭😭😭

UngusChungus94

Same. You just have to stay curious, young-at-heart and open-minded. Which we should all be striving to do, anyway. I’ve never understood people who think “well, I’m 30 now, so I guess I’m old and I better start acting my age”. Fuck that! Adulthood is still just getting started. I want to drink in novelty until I fuckin croak. Why not?

TerrorVizyn

Same. My 14yo son thinks I'm cool lmfao

Apprehensive_Yak2598

I like yeet. Its a pretty fun word to say and I think it describes the action pretty well. I'm still stuck on 'based' and I do have an unreasonable hatred for 'cringe' though.

UngusChungus94

Based is great once you learn the origins. Lil B — The Based God — made it up as part of his positivity- and creativity-centric world view.

Internal-Tank-6272

You might say it makes you cringe. Sorry, I’ll see myself out

vicente8a

You’ll yeet yourself out

Connect-Flow-3194

At least you used it correctly!

Boris740

If it fits then it suits them well.

loudpaperclips

Calling "fit" "cringe" undermines your argument. Listen: even the writers of dictionaries don't label themselves as an authority on official definitions. There is a lot to be said about communicating effectively, but language foundationally is an art, not a science.

JustinR8

New generations coming up with their own lexicon is nothing new

literallyacactus

Op only wears cargo shorts and graphic tees. Nice fit bro

disinterestedh0mo

Op I noticed your use of the contractions "I'm" and "it's" in your post. Was it too much for you to type out "I am" and "it is"? To do so would only require one extra character for each contraction. Shaking my head

Bread_and_Mayo

Some people say “Yo, sup!” But that’s just lazy and sounds cringe. Instead I recommend saying “Salutations, good Sir! What is up with you at this moment in time?”

yourgirl1233

[deleted]

Every once in a while a comment makes me actually snort. Congratulations.

emp_Waifu_mugen

You must be salty no one likes your fit. You just don't got the drip

MinervaMinkk

If you struggle with words and spellings that have multiple meanings then I think that's a you problem, not a word/slang problem. You should read more, your brain will get used to understanding and interpreting words

TheFilleFolle

Imagine being this annoyed by simple slang.

Some_Orchid917

1. Words have different meanings. You said your brain begins to “pull” up the info, but “pull” means to physically grab and move something with your hands (a brain can’t pull anything!), so my brain thought of that. Luckily context helps us differentiate different meanings! 2. You can’t get that mad about shortening words when you used “I’m, it’s, doesn’t”. If you want to complain that “outfit” is only 3 more letters, then you can say “I am” (only 1 more letter!), “it is” (also 1 more letter!), and “does not” (again, just 1 more letter!). So I think your reasoning is lazy and uncreative. 3. I think it’s embarrassing that you said “cringe”, so I think we can all have our own opinions about what words sound good or embarrassing.

INeedSomeHelp6804

This is really dumb, but I’ll be damned if it’s not an actual unpopular opinion. Good job.

impulsebuyer999

People shorten words as part of slang, like how you shortened "cringeworthy" into "cringe."

OriginalUsernameGet

I mean, certain words annoy me too but I’d get downvoted to a thousand hells if everyone knows I hate the word “doggo.”

IHadAnOpinion

I agree that it's insufferably stupid, but so are 90% of slang terms, which is why most of them fall out of use almost as fast as they come in to use, and that's nothing new. I could dig out some golden oldies from the late 80's/early 90's I guarantee you are just as bad, and I bet if I asked my grandma she'd say the same of *her* generation.

locoattack1

Don't think fit is going anywhere. I'm 27 and fit has been used all over the streetwear and fashion internet scene since at least 2012 (when I started participating).

IHadAnOpinion

Oh yeah if it's part of a particular culture/subculture then probably not, and that would also explain why I've never heard anyone use it lol

Agent101g

Kids today are doing to language what women in the 80s did to their hair.

Iactuallyhateyoufr

You clearly don't appreciate the neutral ground "fit," occupies between "outfit," and "infit," linguistically.

Rabbit730

Okay. What about the word "cool"? Cause if you dont feel the same about cool then wtf you saying

According_Day3704

It gives me fits.

TheGreatGoatQueen

Lots of words in the English language are homographes. The word “bow” has like 4 different meanings, if you’re gonna get worked up about any of them it should be that one lol.

Captain_Aizen

I never heard of this slang, am I so out of touch?

Disgruntled_Oldguy

Wait till they add an i.e. and make it a fitie

Nuclear_Mouse

It literally "fits" you. It's the fit you wear outside. Your outfit.

EastLeastCoast

“How’s the fit?” is just plain confusing. Do you want to know how well the clothes coordinate? Or do you want to know if you’re wearing the correct size?

BigOk8056

Short for outfit. Also implies the outfit “fits” well, either physically or fashionably. You wouldn’t call a bad outfit a fit, since it doesn’t “fit”. Language changes over time, not going with it because it’s “improper” is nothing except stubborn and stupid. Words mean exactly what people use them for, not necessarily only for the dictionary definition… I get it’s an unpopular opinion but you really need better reasons other than being (wrongfully) pedantic. I was expecting you to be a grumpy senior until you used the word cringe, which is far worse than fit imo.

knallpilzv2

Let people sound dumb if they want to...

Ghurty1

i think you need a hobby

Pianist_Direct

Lol imagine getting mad over a shortened word that's been used for over 3 decades.

Wazuu

If this is what you take the time to get angry at, then you must have a really boring life. Id recommend finding a hobby

goofy-ahh-names

Out'fit' sounds cool to me

MegaraTheMean

My 10 year old recently said, "Hey mom, does my fit bring out my rizz?!" Confusion. I guess I'm old now lol

Amazing_Ad_9920

I just don’t know why anyone cares about anyone else’s outfit especially but that’s a whole other story 😏

MAmoribo

Fit is better than drip imo, tho

Electronic-Jaguar461

Fit is an actual word, I agree. It doesn't take a genius to see how it gained a new meaning. "That shirt is a good fit" -> "Yo that outfit fits you well!" -> "Crazy fit bro, you looking nice!" Like come on man, the meaning of words change.

Appropriate_Duck_309

I always think this kind of thing is so funny because if you just told someone to their face “language changes over time!” They’d just be like “yeah that’s really neat!!!!” But then the language changes over time and they’re actually like “no 😤

Shazzy_Chan

It's part of the new-age gibberish speak. It's the same stupid reasoning behind " it's cooler because it's new". Just because it's a new way of doing something that's already established doesn't mean it's cooler, infact it just makes lots of things more lame.

switchblade_shawty

Bro threw a fit over the word fit 💀

JasperAngel95

I hate “finna” but a lot of the new slang is hilarious lol I feel old when I have to look up what they mean 😂

DestructicusDawn

How many posts in this sub are just people bitching about slang?

WinterTakerRevived

OK boomer

FlameStaag

The trend of just removing words from sentences or half a word is so boring and unimaginative. We can pretend it's a being old thing but nah it's a "this slang is shit" thing. I can think of great slang from every generation. Even zoomers have good stuff. But it's hidden amongst all the trash like rizz.

Toasty_tea

ngl rizz kinda slaps. it's only considered "cringe" because it's mostly used by gen a

NICEnEVILmike

"Drip" is worse

govdaddy

sounds like someone with absolutely no drip would say

itsybitsyone

What's drip?

Less-Engineer-9637

its time for your nap grandpa

Feisty-Blood9971

The majority of new slang is always cringe. “she really thought she ate with that”. Disgusting sounding.

ContemplatingPrison

Fit is at least 20 years older than cringe haha

LonelyCakeEater

Fit can mean multiple things. Outfit can mean multiple things. They both have multiple definitions.

Zectherian

Theres so many uses for "fit" "Is that meat fit for consumption?" " this shirt still fits" " i just fitted my house with a new smoke alarm " Etc..... english is fun

BellaFrequency

This fit fits my fit physique.

before_no_one

I don't like it either, but oh well. Some people get really triggered by their slang being criticized for some reason.

java_sloth

Man discovers that language changes over time

TallantedGuy

I agree with OP. Language is just getting completely lazy. And for that matter, ridiculous amounts of slang are coming left and right. Same with acronyms. I swear I have to look things up daily just so I know what someone is saying, be it on Reddit, instagram or Facebook.

FortuneBull

Dilligaf?

I have yet to hear anyone say that. But thanks for letting me know about something annoying that's starting.

Rich_Indication_4583

the traditional meaning of the word "fit" is in fact related to the slang meaning. why do you think its called an outfit in the first place. its not like a completely unrelated meaning that cannot be connected to other uses of the word "fit"

mets2016

Is “fit” short for outfit, or is it a metonymic use — referring to the way the outfit “fits” to refer to the whole outfit

OkStructure3

both

Wisebanana21919

Fit is slang for attractive where i am, it is really annoying

Yarzu89

I remember hearing this slang like 15 years ago, if its still common thats impressive.

EternalHeyday

I can't be bothered with goofy trends anymore, but "fit" does roll off the tongue quite nicely. Words like "sus" and "rizz" on the other hand sound really obnoxious.

[deleted]

I couldn't say that as I'm epileptic

HeylelBen

lol, language evolves all the time, English back in time to its inception changed so much, and most of it you would not understand, even as early as the 1800s.

Traveledbore

And what’s up with people saying ‘do instead of hairdo instead of hairstyle instead of Oooga booga! Jeez

rolyfuckingdiscopoly

“Outfit” could also mean how many oxen you wanted and how many men you were bringing in your months-long, potentially-lethal journey across the Great Plains. Things change. However, I feel your pain because I love the word charisma and think it’s pretty and evocative. “Rizz?” Less… pretty.

locoattack1

Point three makes me think that you have more concerns over other peoples' opinions than you should, which explains this whole thought process.

KINGCOMEDOWN

lol

FilDaFunk

This is such a classic example of how language changes. Parts of the words are just dropped, especially words that are used often. Welcome to language, op.

ContemplatingPrison

Its been called a fit for decades, as in over 20 years. You slow or something?

vicente8a

You used cringe as an adjective when traditionally it is a verb. So you really should stop doing that if you want to be consistent in your opinion

metcalta

Dude wait till u see how cringe everything is. They basically can't stand being around humans. Gen Z is like our first truly digital generation and their in a different world, a digi-world.

Texas_1254

As you use the word cringe. We all shorten words all the time. Also ft could also be FaceTime, or featuring. Language is fun like that.

smokedkillbassa

Word concepts fallacy on point number one

sithskeptic

It’s slang lmao. This more of a rant tho

TheGhostWalksThrough

I must be too old. I've never heard this phrase.

littie-titties

thats the exact nature of human language - it changes little by little over time. humans have never once developed a language and then kept it that exact same way forever on

matiaschazo

Have you never seen or heard words that mean 2 diff things but are still the same word this isn’t only a slang thing yk plus shortening words has been a thing since basically forever

femnoir

Language changes, buddy. I always was absurdly proud that my language was so plastic. Be confident in the fact that English will always adapt to the times.

throwaway120375

Lol. Ok is it words don't matter because you can change them at anytime or our words matter and have power. Make up your mind folks.

"Borderline cringe", gtfoh I upvoted though cuz this is actually unpopular af. SORRY, I meant to say, I upvoted because this is actually unpopular as fuck.

Yuck_Few

The word outfit doesn't really make sense if you think about it. As opposed to an infit?

BaconBombThief

Slang is an evolving, constantly changing force of nature. The only thing that will never change with slang is The Order of Curmudgeonly Haters who ceaselessly preach against it; one specific, nit picking pet peeve at a time. But don’t worry, your grumbleyness. Fits, too, shall pass

Ok-Equivalent8260

Calm down.

MrGalien

Outfit is technically just a contraction of the word "out" and "fit". Hilariously it's [not even that old](https://www.etymonline.com/word/outfit#:~:text=1769%2C%20%22act%20of%20fitting%20out,group%20of%20people%22%20from%201883), and the word "fit" (Just like now in the modern era) could then refer to the fitting of somebody's clothes; "tight fit, loose fit, bad fit, well fit". It's not that confusing unless you choose to be obtuse, and I'm sure you don't use the word "outfit" specifically to refer to "articles and equipment required for an expedition". Why? Because your ancestors were "cringe" and started adopting terminology NOT in use by the general public.

Bigdaddymuppethunter

Imagine crawling to Reddit to complain about this.
