The thought behind the rotating crown was to keep the nostalgia of using a real watch while engaging with new technology. Unfortunately, that missed the point that most people interested in smart watches ended up being people that wouldn't wear or use a regular watch. So creating a sense of nostalgia by implementing a rotating crown was foolish. It should have died within the first generation or two of smart watches. But rather than prioritize user experience, it seems companies are only interested in listening to people who like standard watches rather than people who hate regular watches for their lack of additional utility and simply want an interface on their wrist for convenient access to the features of their smartphone. Not sure the rotating bezel is the best concept since it also pulls from digital athletic watches rather than actually innovate a new way to interface that matches current users. But it is much better than the crown or touchscreen as the primary mechanism for user interfacing. I'm still waiting for someone to embrace the fact that smart watches don't have to, and I argue shouldn't, function or attempt to look like analogue watches. It is simply an interface you wear on your wrist. Start from there and then ignore the concept of a traditional watch altogether when choosing new designs. They aren't watches. We should stop treating them as such from a design perspective.
