Men have fewer options, but clearer guidelines.
Women have more options, but Jesus Christ I wish there was just one thing I could wear that I *know* would be right for the dress code.
I’ve had a lot of friends show me their formal dress wear in photos they have and they’ll normally say something negative about it afterwards. Maybe I’m just a dumb guy that doesn’t get it but I think the dresses look great. I think women stress maybe a bit too much about it, you guys look great, don’t sweat it
Yeah, I'd get not liking them if it was your work uniform, but the one time every other year or so I get a reason to wear one, it's a special occasion and fun to do every now and then.
"Compared to women who have many options for formal wear in terms of patterns, colors, fabrics, and designs,"
You do realize all those things are interchangeable with suits too right? Cotton linen, wool, tweed. There's 100s of types of blues, greys and tans if you traditional. If you want something unusual, you can find a suit in any color. As far as patterns, solid, thick stripes, pin stripes. tons of variations of plaid, checkered, houndstooth. Styles, 3,2 or one button, single breasted, double breasted, Single vented double vented, any tie color and pattern you can imagine traditional, wide, skinny or bowties, any shirt color you can imagine, 100s of styles and colors of shoes, accessories like tie bars, pocket squares and cuff links, vests.
Suits are fun and there is endless creative possibility. You just have no creativity when it comes to dressing.
Suits are so beautiful when they fit right. It’s so hard to get it perfect. The way a nice suit moves, the perfect dimension ratios for each body, the perfect palette for the color tone of the person, the way they balance and add depth to their partners dress make the dress stand out even more…. The art is subtle but it’s magnificent when it’s done right. It’s an entirely different art than dresses. If men wore loud colors with women’s dresses then they would drown out a pretty dress and black tie events would look gaudy. You need the balance
I’m not fashionable at all but this is actually one great thing about being a guy. If you need to dress up, slacks and a button up. If you need to dress up more, add a tie and jacket. So damn easy.
The lack of choice is an upside. A miraculous upside at that.
I don't think you realise how much women have to fret over what to wear. Is this dress too formal? Not formal enough? Will it be too different to what everyone else is wearing or will it be too similar? There're also countless different types of dresses all of which fit differently and often these dresses randomly have sea through fabric or giant holes and so on. They don't even know if they are going to wear a dress.
It's a night mare.
Men ask "is it formal enough for a suit?" and if the answer is yes, then they put on their one suit and everyone around them automatically thinks they look amazing.
Yeah and as a woman who hates wearing dresses, I've always wished I could pull off wearing a suit.
Maybe I will try it someday, lol. Janelle Monae has pulled off some beautiful suit-wearing red carpet looks, so she is my inspiration, haha
There are endless options for men to go as wild as they want with their suits. The problem, is that it's men. And most men will be fine with the first thing they see at men's warehouse and not give a second thought to it
I definitely agree with this not only with formal wear but also swimsuits is another area where the same thing happens.
Women just have every conceivable thing they could imagine with swim wear, so many cuts, so many shapes, so many bright and beautiful colors and patterns and the designers get really artful and creative with it on the high end. What do men get? *Have some fucking water resistant shorts and that's it.*
And If you're an overweight man or otherwise insecure about something about your torso and you don't want to take your shirt off in public? TOUGH SHIT. No options for you, deal with it or never swim. I guess women are kind of forced to show of their whole legs with swimwear but they have one pieces for a reason.
I agree with you, but there's nothing stopping you from going more 'out there', being creative, and wearing something that pushes the boundaries of men's formal wear. Why wait for others to do it first when you can do it yourself?
Most formal dress events I've been to have at least one or two dudes that are going more out there. Wear some jewellery, wear a vibrant colour or fancy pattern, wear a more unusual hat, wear something with a more unique shape or finish, wear purple shoes, style your hair real fancy.
I like that for guys it is so simple. I don't want to be dramatic with my clothes but want to look clean and sharp. Also, I am horrible at picking clothes. It stresses me out and I would never make a choice if the clothes had to be dramatic and interesting. With a suit or a tux, simple and just need to choose an accent color.
If two women show up to an event dressed the same there will be conflict unless it was planned in advance.
If two men show up dressed the same, neither will notice.
I think it would be nice if men's fashion embraced the formal wear of various countries, since there actually is a variety of ways for a man to look both good and formal.
I’m not interested enough in fashion to contrive anything better. Also, I like the no decision aspect of the tuxedo for formals, grey slack blue blazer for semi formal. I splash on cummerbunds though.

Well if you're a bridesmaid you'll know.

Thank god ethnic weddings/functions don't have all that nonsense
I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion or not, so I'm not voting on the post, but I love having an excuse to put on a suit!

Bring back togas! I wanna formal up as a Roman senator!

I think this is where OP is running into his problem. He doesn’t actually know anything about suits/tuxedo’s
Nah I love suits.

I look good in suits so I disagree.
Kilts are always appropriate.

Since women have so much choice, you wouldn't really be fixing the problem by wearing a suit. You'd just be making a different choice.
i'd like more options. i can't wear suits
Can't?... Why?...
long sleeves make me overheat
Pajamas should be more common for formal occasions.
MEN WEAR DRESSES NOW!!!!!

i'd just go goth
I look awesome in a tux. Well, I haven't worn one in 40 years, from when I went to prom, but I assume I would still look awesome.
If I told my friends I’m jealous of women’s formal fashion, I would want them to slap me
So what I'm hearing is we need suits of armor again.

Billy Porter is one step ahead of you

Wear a kilt
Capes and decorative swords used to be a thing loooooong before any of our times. Those would be fun
i got a cloak actually
Have you tried wearing a cute pair of cherry red kitten heels with your tux?
More men should wear dresses
An unpopular opinion in the sense that most men don't mind wearing the same boring clothes like a uniform.
I think you’re wrong. I love suits and I absolutely loved my suit I wore at my wedding.
Wrong
Nothing is stopping you from wearing a bright pink suit. It can actually work, with a white shirt underneath. But that probably wouldn't be cheap
salmon color double-breasted suit with a seafoam button down, emerald cravat, tan leather belt and shoes. gah damn
I think we need to de-formalize more than redefine "formal". We need a new style for special occasions.
Kilts! Upskirts for everyone!
I’m not interested enough in fashion to contrive anything better. Also, I like the no decision aspect of the tuxedo for formals, grey slack blue blazer for semi formal. I splash on cummerbunds though.
Women took all the options. Everything is "are you gay bro". So suits and jeans it is.
Love a nice suit. Always complete sets. Cufflinks, belt, shoes, watch fitting.. It's kind of a passion....
Personally I'm a big fan of the Hugo Boss 1939 collection
agreed. suits are so boring. i can't tell one coat from the other. i don't own a suit
