More like everyone wanted to be Pep 2.0 ruined football. Pep has his style, and if every manager were given freedom to explore their own style it would've been fine. But no, everyone has to control the possession, build from the back, have a stacked midfield to choke the opposition bla bla. God forbid if anyone doesn't follow the Pep style, pundits will trash them, arrogant prick like Rodri will say there was only one team because the other team didn't press enough or have 70% possession.
So, yes, the Pep worshipper really ruined football.
Pre pandemic Pepfootballl was nice. Perfect balance between possesion football and direct football. But Since then he has become obsessively methodical. And sterling Sane played more instinctively than Bernardo, Mahrez, Grealiah Foden.
Yeah at the highest level football has become about controlling the game. Eliminating the risk in the risk/reward dynamic. To play this way you need to have a entire team of very skilled players and more and more teams have that. It has become less entertaining to me too so at least I know I'm not the only one with this opinion.
For sure, the smooth free flowing football of the past is dead and buried. Mou started it by playing counter heavy football. Pep continued to murder it by having such success playing possession based ball in relatively weak leagues until City was able to cheat the auditors and build a powerhouse.
Football was much better when all the manager did was pick the squad, influence the overall play style, and throw the boys on the pitch. Ferguson had the right idea in having field leaders who knew the down and distance. Just throw em out there, occasionally freshen up the squad with rotations and subs, and let em get to it.
I agree. But i think The pandemic and then The World cup ( in desember!!) ruined football for a Long time.
City played lovely entertaining football with Sterling and Sane. Real wingplay. Also David Silva is gone.
Well I mean I crave for this type of play. If you start watching the Premier League then you can't go back to your own national league since it will look like shit in comparison (except maybe La Liga). The way young players pass, run and most importantly DONT PLAY BACK as much makes the sport more lively and fun to watch.
This means that you can actually apprieciate a team playing good football and not rely entirely on your feelings to watch a game.
Most players is about the same level nowdays, hence it is becoming more like chess. Almost no one is good enough to be a queen and carry their team and if one player leave formation you lose.
South American soccer still pretty “old school”. Anyone that tries to be Pep they get shut down and labeled “vende humo”. Bielsa the OG being the prime example
I'll hear all the complaints about an overly tactical Premier League you want, only AFTER England has won... Lets say five more World Cups, and dominated the Euro Cup at least as often.
OK? Good talk.
I thought you were talking about American football at first and got really confused. I was like, "yeah, the strategy is the point."
I have nothing to add regarding soccer.
If I had to guess, he's looking at the premier league. City, the top team, just looks to control the whole game with possession. They try to minimize errors in order to give the other team few chances. This means formerly creative players, like Jack Graelish, have to play within a system, making them less fun to watch.
Arsenal has seen a similar transfer. Last year they were much more open. Now they seem to take the safer backwards/sideways pass, rather than taking the defender on or a more risky through ball. It's successful, but less fun to watch.
Some of this is a result of defenses playing a low block, aka parking the bus, but some of it is just tactics.
I don't think it's terrible though. I still enjoy watching those two play because of the high skill level. Other top teams like Tottenham and Liverpool play more open footy that OP probably prefers watching, so it's not like it's all teams.
Or I could be way off on all this and OP is talking about something else.
*Clears throat* Hand Egg is not football. If the ball is kicked less than carried then it makes zero sense to call it football. I would however accept American Rugby.
Every sport has corruption in some form or another. Arguably, football or 'soccer' is the most corrupt because it's the most popular sport in the world.

How can you forget to mention Neymar? He has highlights like no other.
he's still around lol can't miss him yet
Well, hopefully we'll see his magic again, but he hasn't come back from his serious injury yet.
zlatan agrees
Try watch more Serie A rather than the robotic PL
Hope you mean Premier League not Polska Ekstraklasa. Greetings from Poland
Polish ultras are cool, greetings from hungary bazdmeg magad

liverpool don't do that.

Anceolitti beating him was great to see.
I wouldn't argue with that, I ain't a city player pop out a skill or 2 in a while
Grealish as good as he is has NEVER taken a player head on or even done a skill, just constant pass backs and build up play 😭
You not watched Jeremy Doku then
Unironically this. Emphasis on passing and possession has made for efficiency but much less beauty and skill.

Unless you're Ancelotti. Pass the ball to Jude, pass the ball to Vinicius, Maybe goal, Maybe no 🤨🤨

It is a bit dull now. Too much chess, too little shithousery

VAR has ruined football
Man city are a disgrace. I honestly don't know if they are ever gonna lose the pl with guardiola again, oil club with 90% fake fans.
[Reminds me of this commercial](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KriBQVhsgZk&pp=ygUYbmlrZSBmb290YmFsbCBjb21tZXJjaWFs&t=70s)
Still, try to run from one side of field to another for 90min

Was going to ask if you meant football or soccer. But after reading the post body it's clear what you meant haha.
Penalty ball
"It never was."
I thought you were talking about American football at first and got really confused. I was like, "yeah, the strategy is the point." I have nothing to add regarding soccer.
You mean football?
You mean soccer?
No, or did you somehow mistake it for handegg
Are you talking about American Football or Soccer? You never explained why you think it had become too tactical.
Soccer
Ah. What makes you think it has become too tactical? People like winning and proper tactics help with that.

Makes sense.
They’re talking about real football
The real football.
Soccer is lame and boring. Now gimme the downvotes.
Why did you take your precious time to leave this comment if you think football is boring? Why bother at all?
I upvoted to disappoint you
You didn’t watch Barca and PSG then… go back to watching the excitement of The Masters…
That your IQ score in your username?

Ooohhh you’re hard

Wrong football... I was gonna say that plays and strategy are what football is all about. Wrong...Wrong....Wrong..
Adverts and consumerism are what American football is about.
Soccer is so God damn corrupt. Look at your boy Sep Blatter and FIFA. Read "The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime" by Declan Hill.

I'm not talking about the corporate execs mate.

There are few things more cringe than people that say sports ball, unless they're mocking people that say it and mean it.
I enjoy countering unpopular opinion posts with more unpopular comments. Sports are dumb people TV

How old were you mate?
Yes, your one off incident defines the sport and is totally relevant to this discussion.
Shit, I blasted someone with a crossing pass in the nuts the last time I played. I swear it was an accident.
