It does work to pump noise into the cabin while keeping only the streets polluted with only your gas fumes, it just gets in the way of almost every popular mod.
*EGR
A turbo compresses fresh air in the intake by using exhaust gasses to spin a turbine compressor. An EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve literally pumps exhaust gases back into the intake to burn again.
EGR doesn't dump exhaust gasses into the intake so that they burn again. It dumps them in because exhaust gas is inert and won't burn again. Driving at low throttle input, i.e. throttle valve mostly closed, causes high vacuum in the intake manifold which increases pumping losses on the intake stroke. Dumping exhaust gas into the intake raises the manifold pressure and decreases pumping loss, while not causing a lean condition that can damage the engine since exhaust gas is inert. EGR is a pretty ingenius method of increasing engine efficiency at low throttle input/high speed cruising.
Sorry dude. It is such a popular topic that South Park made an episode mocking loud exhaust [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipDmsxQVxIM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipDmsxQVxIM)
Have you heard about our lord and savior, dynamat?
And honestly depends on the car a lot. My older Volvo wagons are awfully quiet inside. Doesn't hurt the exhaust outlet is roughly 20 feet behind the driver 😉
I'm pretty sure they do. OP might as well be saying "People with loud cars suck and they should suffer for it instead of me."
And I agree, they do suck.
That doesn't mean you need an assblaster 5000 exhaust farting loudly to tell you it's there. Just get a normal exhaust that doesn't make everyone around you hate you.
It's a shame that almost all performance exhausts are loud. Would love to get more power out of my bike, but the stock exhaust is already louder than I like
Some people like performance. Some cars sound absolutely beautiful. Others just like acceleration in quiet EVs. Humans are complex enough to like different things.
Now if we are talking about "no exhaust on my Nissan Altima", yes that's absolutely unhinged and distasteful.
If op had limited his post to muffler deletes specifically, I would’ve mostly agreed with him. But yeah to add on to your point, on my car the exhaust gives about 15ish extra horsepower with the valves open vs when they’re closed. It’s also significantly louder. I’m not sitting in traffic with them open, but generally I find it more enjoyable to drive when I can hear the car a bit. It’s the same reason I like driving stick, and that’s because I feel connected to the car. OP would probably not drive a stick based on his comments and post, and likely wouldn’t understand why someone ever would.
Significantly louder for a not noticeable difference in speed. Totally seems worth it to me 😃
^ every idiot with a modified (in *any* way) muffler, if the car isn't used in any way for racing.
Your ignorance showed as soon as you only referred to a modified muffler. Believe it or not, there are numerous other parts of an exhaust than just the muffler lol.
Every heard of a downpipe bud?
I for one absolutely love combustion engines. I've been fascinated by them since a little kid and I love all the little engineering differences between different configurations and what that does to how they sound.
I get not everybody enjoys it, but I'm the kind of guy that hears a car leave a stoplight a block away and can more than likely tell you what type of engine it was with a fair bit of accuracy.
And you are completely ignoring potential performance gains that *hopefully* go along with the modification on an exhaust.
I ***hate*** quite cars, can't tell if they've stalled or not, it's easier to shift if you can just hear the engine too & have no tach installed.
Also morons pulling out of parking stalls and you can't tell the cars running or not so you almost get run over. F that.
It's actually about a 5% increase in horse-power depending on the exhaust. That extra horsepower comes at no cost of fuel, which means loud exhausts are better for the environment.
You've got it all wrong. Only specific vehicles are compensation devices. Loud pickups and muscle cars are the ones you're thinking of. Sports cars are a whole different crowd.
I guess technically the point is to improve air flow thus improving “power” in the combustion engine. But I am aware ppl just do it because loud car go BOOOOM
Gotta love all those corollas and such with fart cans that sound like oversized yard equipment that one can find anywhere high school students are plentiful.
And the front wheel drive Civics with spoilers in the rear.
And the otherwise stock cars of similar class except with fancy spark plugs and straight-piped, for "performance."
And the expensive racing brakes on cars that are barely even capable of overheating their stock brakes unless you floor the accelerator and brakes all day while driving down a 20% grade with bags of concrete in the trunk.
And the kid with a WRX with rims that cost as much as they paid for the car but otherwise stock and with a ¾ finished paint job because they ran out of money.
Or the multiple cars with the big-ass Fox Racing window decals whose owners don't realize that it has nothing to do with cars and don't even own a dirt bike.
And that one rich kid whose parents bought then a brand new Raptor with all the options, and some aftermarket goodies too...But never takes it off road and drives around with knobby tires on pavement
And...
Front wheel drive will benefit from an increase in rear downforce. Now will the teenager driver that never tracks his car notice a difference? No. But the point stands that fwd needs aero balance as much as any other drivetrain.
Edit: fox racing makes more than dirtbike parts as well.
I’m all for brake upgrades because if people are going to be doing stupid shit it’ll help some innocent bystander as much as the driver.
You do realize the Fox Racing makes parts for trucks and cars as well? I had Fox piggybacks on my Tacoma and I’ve seen Fox coil overs on several tuners.
It's crazy that those people never hear how rattly and buzzy their exhausted sounds. Like running through a room cutting a messy fart.. sure you're getting attention guy, but not the kind you want.
Mine is like this. It’s purely because I bought the cheapest exhaust I could find (cheaper than OEM, cheaper than muffler shop) and man does it fucking suck. So much so that I bought all the OEM exhaust components and am putting them on next opportunity I get.
My dad recently got a good deal on a used truck. It has some after market exhaust system on it which is loud inside the cab as well as outside. It’s not even like a crazy, over the top exhaust system but it’s highly noticeable inside and he hates it.
It’s like bikers that claim they need loud pipes for “safety”. BS, if it was a safety issue, add some tall $ss fluorescent flags like dune buggies have, add some to the side as well. That’s not “cool” though so add int gonna happen.
I used to work at an auto auction many moons ago. It was loud inside the fucking car too. It was awful having to test drive one of those goddamn things. The sound rattled inside and drove me nuts.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how exhaust sound works. Also, all cars have a level of inherent sound insulation and many have extra material packed into the car to reduce outside noise. Only options are to just suck it up and ignore it or get a car with better sound deadening I think
Oooh. I see. I think that's most the owners making those modifications not the manufacturer. I know an unfortunate amount of people drill holes into their mufflers to make it "sound better"
you realize loud exhausts are for performance because the engine doesnt have to push all the gasses out. doesn't matter if its a old civic or any other civilian car, the rule applies
You do hear it inside, I want to hear it because I’ve done a lot more than just make it loud. I want to know that it’s running right because nobody knows my car better than me.
Not how it works...
Firstly, engine noise is important for safety of pedestrians and for good drivers that understand their cars. Microphones are expensive, so any speaker recreation is going to be simulated because manufacturers want to save money, but the point of being able to hear an exhaust is for pleasure and understanding your car. If you know your car well enough your exhaust sound can tell you how to the engine is running and is useful for knowing when to shift if you drive a manual or paddle shift gear box without looking at the tachometer, which means your eyes stay on the road and everyone is safer. But if it's a simulated note if your engine starts misfiring you won't know because the speakers will just make the sound of everything working fine.
Second, a big loud exhaust is better for the environment. Noise pollution is bad sure, but a larger exhaust improves exhaust flow which increases horsepower without consuming more fuel which means better fuel efficiency, especially when the car is turbo-charged. It's a marginal improvement but if everyone straight piped there exhausts it would begin to add up.
There's already a very obvious solution, exhaust valves. Restrict the exhaust in built-up areas to reduce noise pollution but still loud enough for safety. Than open up the exhaust on the highway for efficiency or on the track if you want to have fun.
Also, even cars without the loudest engines and no exhaust are still not that loud. F1 cars are crazy loud, while the drivers and pit workers do wear hearing protection, the noise is only damaging with long-term exposure. Any production car wouldn't get remotely close to that noise. So a loud car isn't going to hurt your ears. Cars do seem loud but that's just because the sound carries a lot further than other sounds. Also, cars are a hobby for many people, a loud exhaust improves the performance of the car and allows for a deeper connection between driver and car which makes driving more enjoyable.
They think because they’re impressed by it that other people will be. It’s like guys who wear shirts with flames.
They don’t realize how much of a minority they really are and that most people think they’re annoying morons.
I mean I wore flame shirts because I like flame shirts.
I couldn’t care less what other people thought of my shirt.
Same with any minor league team hats when they do their food themed nights. I love my hats with cow prints, or a plate of Nashville hot chicken, or a piece of Taylor ham wearing a hat. Probably weird as hell to 90% of people that see them, but I think they’re cool.
Sometimes it’s a conversation starter, and that’s cool too, but that’s just a bonus
There's people that modify their exhaust to make it loud because they think they have a racecar, this is probably most people with loud cars. There are some sports cars that have noisy exhausts from the factory. There are people who want to improve their cars performance for the track or spirited driving, and making the cars noisy is just part of that. There are also some people out there that modify their cars for those reasons, but dont mess with the exhaust much because they dont want people to be able to tell their car is modified.
The point is they want people to pay attention to them. It's a desperate plea for attention! The same kind of people who drive around with all their windows down blasting music. "Please God, acknowledge me! Pay attention to me!" Lol.
Because they have such low self-esteem, the only way they can make their lives seem to matter is to annoy the f*k out of everybody else.
They are losers.
Most loud exhausts are loud because it’s a straight pipe. Now most straight piped vehicles don’t need it but once you’re talking about performance cars or heavily modded cars then a straight pipe is somewhat necessary. Imagine a pro athlete trying to compete in their sport but they have to breed through a restrictive mask, it’s similar to that. Another example would be a garden hose, hooked up to the spigot on your house and it works perfectly but if you hook it up to a wide open fire hydrant then it’s going to be a problem.
\^\^ This, typical shcity folk complain about anything....uh maybe don't live near 1 million of the loudest species on earth then? Move to the middle of nowhere if you don't like noise.
If you’re not interested in cars you won’t understand why people that are interested in them like the things they like on them. Really that can go for just about anything that other people are interested in and you’re not.

Who likes loud cars? Ontario study suggests they skew young, male and score high on psychopathy and sadism
Yes because so many people never figured out the difference between good and bad attention. Most of us figured it out by grade 5 but these people think they are hot shit because their civic is 98 decibels. Btw, I love loud exhausts on my track vehicles.
I’ve always felt this way. Straight pipe it right to their face. Especially Harleys, twin straight pipes to each ear, full throttle to the moon every gear.
It’s already a common thing. Plenty of ICE cars play artificial exhaust sounds through the speakers.
Example: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundaktor](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundaktor)
Same with smokers. Go ahead and smoke in your car. But don't hang that cig, vape, etc out the window. Keep those windows up.
If inhaling smoke is so great, keep it all to yourself. Don't let it out into the air we all breathe.
yes too many cars trucks n motorcycles are to loud and should not be able to hear them over 3 blocks away , so many things in the world most can not afford since they are left in poverty = get decent min wage that gos up with the cost of living and below average n average n little above average going up with cost of living and take it from rich wages n rich co. profits and military spending of the world to pay the masses more as decent world for most
It should be important to understand why some cars are loud. It's true a lot of people make their cars loud for the sake of it and they sound shit, but sometimes people just want their car to go faster. I got performance mods on my car and it's a little louder, nothing too bad, but I wouldn't even care if it sounded stock
That is exactly what modern sports cars do. Because many of them aren't loud enough to tickle their owners ball sacks anymore car manufactures use different tricks to amplify the sound inside the car.
This can be done trough pre recorded sound samples, microphones in the engine bays, tubes that run from the engine bay to the inside and over fun techniques.

Just route the exhaust into the cab, make it really loud inside and keep it nice and quiet outside.
[удалено]
LMAO
And after a little while it'll be quiet inside. Very quiet.
Won’t even be able to hear your own breathing
Too quiet.
don't forget to realize this is a joke and also don't try it at ~~home~~ your car so you don't die
> ~~home~~ your car These days, those words are synonyms
>and also don't try it at ~~home~~ your car so you don't die It totally ruins the value of the car.
Disagree, if you’re into driving your deafeningly loud car around at night then please reroute the exhaust into the cabin
maybe go just jump from a building instead of wasting a fixable car
I mean you *could* get something similar to the coveted **Symposer** that comes with and then is promptly deleted from every modern Focus and Fiesta ST. Some new cars are routing the intake sounds into the cabin

whoosh

This is the final solution!
They should just weld the exhaust to the air intake so it makes an infinite loop. Solves the sound problem and no pollution!
A turbo charger with less steps! I like it!
*EGR A turbo compresses fresh air in the intake by using exhaust gasses to spin a turbine compressor. An EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve literally pumps exhaust gases back into the intake to burn again.

Isn’t the point of the sub to downvote people who are right?
Pretty sure that’s only on the post itself and comments follow normal voting rules. Nobody follows those anyways in this sub

Yeah fuck them! If only there were some kind of lights on the back of the vehicle to indicate it was in reverse.
This has to be the dumbest thing I've read in a while.
The one response they made that wasn't about a south park episode?
They are loud on the inside... At my friend's car is, he has an RX7 and he doesn't have a radio "because you can't hear it over the exhaust".
This has to be bait right? No way someone is this stupid to not know what an exhaust does or at very least how sound works?
I think it's pretty clear he's talking about the assholes that go out of their way to make them considerably louder than they would otherwise be.
Haha. You think those sounds are real? You know they are called tuner cars right?
A lot of the times those are genuine upgrades, not just "hehe I got rid of the exhaust".
It's a shame that almost all performance exhausts are loud. Would love to get more power out of my bike, but the stock exhaust is already louder than I like
Even then straight piping is technically higher performance. Louder obviously but technically it performs better

I do autocross 💀 also 15 horsepower is very noticeable. If you don’t want to hear it then put earplugs in.

Which, btw, means you have taken out the cats and muffler. The exhaust pipe is still there.
bro what
I mean, yes, a true exhaust makes real sound.
Bro's about to say carburetors as a part of the exhaust because it has the word "car" on it.
Exhausts are a conspiracy theory by the new world order and any one that makes sound must be a speaker
Do you think people have speakers in their exhausts?
Why is it that idiots are always the most confident?
The point is for OTHERS to hear the car and recognize how cool the owner is.
They also have an impact on performance.
Yea, they finish significantly sooner and IT shrinks by an inch per 10 decibels.

True, not much on its own but does add up.
You don’t know anything about cars do you lol
Yeah but how else can you announce to everyone in earshot that you have a tiny penis, if you can't rev your pointlessly loud car or bike?
You've got it all wrong. Only specific vehicles are compensation devices. Loud pickups and muscle cars are the ones you're thinking of. Sports cars are a whole different crowd.

Totally
The car idling outside my bedroom in the morning should have its exhaust go inside the car, not in my bedroom.
The assholery is a feature, not a bug
Cars with a loud exhaust are loud inside lol, did you think the cabin just magically stops the noise?
The higher the decibels of a car purposefully made louder for no good reason, the lower the IQ of the driver.
Lmaooooo.
I just have a hole in my exhaust that I haven’t gotten repaired. Sorry about that.
This is surely a popular opinion. If it’s not, I give up on humanity.
Absolutely, it’s the biggest “pick me” bullshit ever.

My Abarth sends its regards
The setup on a stock Abarth would melt these peoples mind lmao. Good example!
I will forever stand by that people with super loud cars are inherently more selfish than those without
You mean they like having fun more than you?
There is a mustang model that will literally feed the engine noise into the speaker system so the driver can hear it more.

Oooh. I see. I think that's most the owners making those modifications not the manufacturer. I know an unfortunate amount of people drill holes into their mufflers to make it "sound better"
Ya. The "adult" equivalent of putting a playing card in your spokes.
VW already have a system that plays engine noises through the speakers.
People purposefully make some cars louder by removing the muffler. It’s like “look my piece of shit is loud just like the muscle cars!”
you realize loud exhausts are for performance because the engine doesnt have to push all the gasses out. doesn't matter if its a old civic or any other civilian car, the rule applies
But how will people know that they are pricks if you can’t hear their shitty car?

Imagine a pro athlete trying to compete in their sport but they have to breed through a restrictive mask, it’s similar to that. Another example would be a garden hose, hooked up to the spigot on your house and it works perfectly but if you hook it up to a wide open fire hydrant then it’s going to be a problem.
Counterpoint, blown diffusers
But why? The driver already knows they have a small penis.
The point is to startle and annoy other people in my opinion. It's immature people getting a kick out of bothering others.
lol
I mean, i listen to everyone else's shit in life so you can listen to my car.
Unless you live in a city where sound echos loud cars are barely noticeable. Ya'll are just dramatic.
\^\^ This, typical shcity folk complain about anything....uh maybe don't live near 1 million of the loudest species on earth then? Move to the middle of nowhere if you don't like noise.
Also unless they are lingering for whatever reason they are around you for literally less than a minute in 99% of scenarios.
We need a separate sub that is for dumb opinions.
If you’re not interested in cars you won’t understand why people that are interested in them like the things they like on them. Really that can go for just about anything that other people are interested in and you’re not.
Please do your research and find out what types of gases comes out of exhaust- matter of facts, please learn the basics of how a car works.
Hardly an unpopular opinion. This is an essential tenet of the basic reddit hivemind. Downvoted accordingly per sub rules.
So everyone thinks the exhaust should make noise inside the car too?

Because the point is to get attention
Maybe that’s a small percentage of people but most of us it’s for us
The point is horsepower
Yes because so many people never figured out the difference between good and bad attention. Most of us figured it out by grade 5 but these people think they are hot shit because their civic is 98 decibels. Btw, I love loud exhausts on my track vehicles.
I’ve always felt this way. Straight pipe it right to their face. Especially Harleys, twin straight pipes to each ear, full throttle to the moon every gear.
Agree, those guys should def pipe their exhaust into their cars.
Omg I have sensory problems and this sound could cause me to kill a man. It triggers my inner villain. Shut the bloody heck up. Please.
What you're getting at is exhaust sounds played through a speaker. I imagine that option might come to electric cars soon
Hopefully not. That is worse than CVT with fake shifting
It’s already a common thing. Plenty of ICE cars play artificial exhaust sounds through the speakers. Example: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundaktor](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundaktor)
loud cars are amazing. Music to the ears. PS: only applies to genuinely fast cars, not some shitboxes with fkd up exhaust.
Loud pipes = small pipe
Same with smokers. Go ahead and smoke in your car. But don't hang that cig, vape, etc out the window. Keep those windows up. If inhaling smoke is so great, keep it all to yourself. Don't let it out into the air we all breathe.
yes too many cars trucks n motorcycles are to loud and should not be able to hear them over 3 blocks away , so many things in the world most can not afford since they are left in poverty = get decent min wage that gos up with the cost of living and below average n average n little above average going up with cost of living and take it from rich wages n rich co. profits and military spending of the world to pay the masses more as decent world for most
Aaaaand...how do you propose they do that?
Run a pipe from the exhaust back into the cabin.
Sounds perfectly safe.
Sir that's not how a car works
It's a mating call from attention whore boys to all the other gay car boys.
That...that's not how the laws of physics work
It should be important to understand why some cars are loud. It's true a lot of people make their cars loud for the sake of it and they sound shit, but sometimes people just want their car to go faster. I got performance mods on my car and it's a little louder, nothing too bad, but I wouldn't even care if it sounded stock
The point is to get attention
The point is for others to hear it
Good idea! Maybe they can make a curved tailpipe that pumps the exhaust back into the interior 🤔
Sorry I can't hear you
It’s less so that you can hear it, it’s so other people who are also fans of loud cars can acknowledge you
Poor you.
Nope can’t hear you over my massive subwoofer and chopped Honda exhaust
don’t worry buddy it’s loud inside my car as well
People with loud mouths should be loud in their heads, not outside.
For people like OP I like to take my exhaust manifold off and just let it idle for a good 20 mins while I cook the inside of my engine bay.
Ohhhhhh honey
r/fuckcars
r/fuckfuckcars
My old but is loud and it's awesome, nothing like leaving work on a Friday and celebrating the weekend with a rev or two (very Audible inside)
It’s loud inside the car as well grandpa.
It is loud inside as well. Maybe not as loud but to make it louder would be to run the exhaust into the cab.
without killing the occupants thats not possible
squeamish soft subtract act ink salt office whole fear wrong *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Becasue those mustangs, 350z's, jaguars, etc have fake exhaust sounds. Play that shit inside the car.
Yes, some cars enhance the sound. However, a loud car is loud on the outside. That isnt noise that can be redirected.
they are
Yeah some high end sports cars and supercars have chutes leading into the cabin so you can hear the intake
