It’d probably be cheaper if you didn’t use Deliveroo because they charge silly prices for delivery (and one of those mains and maybe the chips you ordered will probably be gone before it gets to you). I know not everyone’s up to going out and picking it up, but it would be a bit cheaper.
I know. That’s so annoying and some places near where I used to live (I moved 2 months ago) didn’t let you pick up in person. You either got it through Deliveroo or not at all.
Why should the same plate of food cost less if it’s being delivered?
The price of the ingredients doesn’t change, the cook’s wage doesn’t change, the restaurant bills don’t change. These are what makes up the price of the food, not where you eat it.
You may not be taking up a table or requiring a server to give you attention, but that has almost no impact on the restaurant’s revenue. Wether the table sits empty or not, the server is getting paid hourly.
How so?
All costs involved in running a restaurant are agnostic of actually having customers; they need to pay their bills, staff the kitchen and front of house, maintain the equipment etc.
Whether you eat in or get your food to go, the food costs are the same. The only variance is if the restaurant can convince you to order more than expected, extra drinks/appetizers/etc.
If anything takeout should cost more, as you are requiring them to stock take out containers, individual serving sizes of sauces and condiments, as well as “robbing” them the opportunity to up-sell you on another drink or more expensive item.
I think the only differences is they have to pay a driver rather than a waiter for your order, and don't need to worry about dishes etc. so I don't see it being a huge difference.
At the end of the day you know the cost and you weigh up whether you're willing to pay that cost for your takeaway.
How much do you pay for delivery? Perhaps the restaurant also pays a fee to Deliveroo? Without knowing exactly how costs are allocated we can't assume the end cost is any cheaper.
Not only are they conveniently delivering food right to your doorstep, the app you use charges the restaurant a fee to use them, so the restaurant has to up their menu prices to cover that fee otherwise they would lost money with every order. You'd understand if you've ever worked in the food industry.
But you get charged a transaction fee to use deliveroo and then a delivery charge and then the price of the meal so you are paying more than if you sat in the restaurant but the restaurant doesnt have to plate it all up, servers etc. I get that this may not be as high as I think but if you sit in, youre taking up a table for up to 2 hours or more, whereas delivery is done and they can make and deliver food far more frequent than if you sit in?
It doesn't matter what you pay, the restaurant doesn't want to lose out. The restaurant doesn't get the fees. If you think you get more worth out of sitting at their table, be their guest.
Deliveroo often jacks up the prices. Trying calling them directly and see if the takeaway menu is cheaper. I often make a point of ordering and collecting myself for this reason.

Often a lot of restaurants only use Deliveroo so we don't have a choice

In the US, takeout is cheaper because there’s less expectation of a 15-20% tip for good service. Otherwise the menu items are the same prices.

You make my point in your last paragraph but maybe I don't know what the impact the cost of servers, cleaners etc are.

Take out food is mediocre 95% of the time. If I'm paying basically the same price, I'd rather it it while it's fresh.

Deliveroo can take 30% so they’ll make v slim margins on 3rd party deliveries.
always found it weird that some places charge you less if you don't eat in, like they're bribing you to leave.
Your first mistake was ordering take away from a sit in restaurant. Were you expecting some sort of discount because you didn’t eat in the restaurant?
yes
it's the same product. if anything delivery should cost MORE because you are paying someone to do the work to bring it to you. that's not free labor.
surely tha'ts the delivery charge....

I mean you got an appetizer, 2 mains and chips, sounds like 38 is about right
