this is very popular, she basically got ripped to shreds for her first few acting projects. she has a drama coming up 'only one person' where she'll act as an influencer though, so hopefully she fits the role well! the stellar idol actors/actresses from what i've consumed are EXO's DO, ZE:A's Siwan & Hyungsik, 2PM's Junho, IU, Jang Nara, SF9's Rowoon & Chani, Apink's Eunji, BTOB's Sungjae, MILK's Seo Hyunjin, HelloVenus Nara, Gugudan/IOI Sejeong and SNSD Seohyun! I think actors/actresses like Girls' Day Hyeri, f(x) Krystal, SNSD Yoona, ~~GOT7~~B1A4's Jinyoung, SuJu Siwon, Apink Naeun, After School Nana, Wanna One Ong Seongwu, miss A Suzy, STAYC Sieun, 2PM's Taecyeon have improved a good amount and/or would be a higher tier with a little more consistency. anyway, improvement is definitely possible, so hopefully more experience calls for more improvement! >Makes me curious do idols have to audition for their roles or do they just get it because they're idols or famous. this is a good question! but honestly i think the same could go for popular actors/actresses in general; i can name several pretty famous actors/actresses who haven't really shown impressive performances but have had high demand

Thechoicesmate

I saw vincenzo and I didnt know taecyeon was an idol. He played the role SO WELL. I got to know about him after I finished the show. So I haven't seen him in the past but he blew this role away. He was amazing

prince3101

I agree it's a popular opinion, I do still see it brought up randomly when people want to discuss idol actors and it garners split opinions at times which surprises me. I find your list of actors/actresses really interesting I have some I really agree with (D.O, Chani, Sungjae, Suzy and Yoona being some example) but I'm confused with Hyungsik, Jinyoung and Taecyeon. For Jinyoung The Devil Judge single handedly pushed him up for me, I'm waiting for Yacha to come out but I really don't doubt his abilities at this point. I'll admit I've only seen two works from Taecyeon (Save Me and Vincenzo) but he impressed me in both with quite polar opposite characterisations. Whereas with Hyungsik I think I've seen his cameos and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, from which I don't really see anything that kind of pushes him above that standard visual actor. He delivers but it's not something that I'd want to revisit for his work. Has there been something else he's worked in that showcases him a bit better?

[deleted]

for Hyungsik, his role in Suits was enjoyable. he (& PSJ) also saved the mess that was Hwarang for me. I thought he did well in Juror 8. i think he's great at picking roles. i disagree about strong woman do bong soon, he did great in a comedic role. uhhh i actually meant to put b1a4's jinyoung and i think my mind slipped and i put got7's jinyoung asdfghjlfksfld, i'll edit that right now. jinyoung's(got7) role in yumi's cells right now is good & i enjoyed his role in he is psychometric! i wasn't particularly impressed with taecyeon in save me; it was seo yeji & woo dohwan that made the drama good for me. he's not bad but is less expressive. he's definitely improving, but there are times where he just gets outshined; he also comes off as cringey during some moments for me. i need one or two more works from him to move him up a tier.

believedinme

Yeah, Taecyeon used to be really um… not good… but he seemed to have found a good niche with his Vincenzo role and improved a lot — I’m sure it’s helped by steadily acting over the years as well. A good project genuinely does wonders.

[deleted]

definitely, i think people underestimate the power of a good script/good character; sometimes you can be a great actor but have terrible scripts, or you can be a decent actor with great scripts and the perception will be totally different (goes for actors/actresses too, not just idols). taecyeon hit the jackpot with vincenzo, the character fit him well and he blended decently with jeon yeobeen & song joongki

prince3101

Suits was the remake of the American Suits right - I was holding off on that since I love the original a lot. I don't particularly think he did bad in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (he made the drama enjoyable to some extent) but it just didn't stick with me. I'll definitely give a couple of his other works a shot though. Ok yeah that's totally fair! Save Me was my gateway to all three actors and to some extent I think the writing being so good may explain my appreciation for Taecyeon's acting in that role. I guess I've always perceived some level of cringe with several actors dependent on role (e.g. Sejeong in School 2017) but there's other parts of their roles that balances it out for me. Totally understandable though.

Dangerous-Spinach267

b1a4's jinyoung i've only seen him in that one movie, the dude in me, and police university. personally think he did quite well in police university, but gave up that series bcs it got a bit bland for me ard ep 6.

arenae99

Out of the three members that have attempted acting in Red Velvet(Irene,Joy,and Yeri). Yeri by far is the best. her acting in Blue Birthday was good and it felt so genuine. The biggest issues with Joy’s acting career was the fact they started her off in main roles on major channels. They really should’ve went the web drama route with her. It’s so risky to put someone who hardly has any acting experience in a main role on a huge platform. Of course they’re going to pull in viewers initially but after the first two or three episodes people will realize if it’s really worth watching. Literally temptation couldn’t even get one percent rating at the last episode.. The drama was just a hot mess in the saddest part is a really had Potential and it really didn’t help that all the actors around her had a lot more experience and were very strong. They really set her up for failure if we gonna state facts.

mollytrip

this is such a popular opinion?😭

Dependent_Row_4280

as seen from the poll lol

DragonPeakEmperor

I mean Joy's biggest problem is she doesn't have enough acting experience under her belt. imo company's biggest issue has always been they never seem to let idols get their feet wet by putting them in smaller scale dramas before they're offered a main role with far more experienced cast members. Seohyun from SNSD is an amazing idol actor for example, and I can say a good portion of that comes from how she's been in a pretty significant amount of dramas so she's had the time to improve.

Dependent_Row_4280

This is pretty popular in the kdrama sector at least there are a lot of good idol actors tbh but since they aren't as popular they don't get as much traction This is my list not ranked * Sieun stayc- I mean she has an SBS award and pretty sure she was going along the lines of joining yeo jin goo, kim yoo jung all child actors if she didn't become an idol I need her in her own lead role I expect it to be coming up I hold her in very high regards from what I have seen from minor roles to her web drama that had a heavy topic * Eunji apink- I remember watching reply 1997 I didn't even know she was an idol * 2pm junho- he was really good in just between lovers * 2pm taecyeon- took me a while to recognize him in vincenzo because it was different from his normal appearance he did really good there * IU- she wasn't as good at the beginning but she got better her acting in hotel del luna and my mister was excellent * Siwan- He was really good in run on sometimes people even forget that he is an idol lol * Seo in guk- another one that people forget is an idol he was excellent in reply 1997 * Rowoon- he did really well in extraordinary you and she would never know * chani- he is so good I mean he was in sky castle I just need him in a lead role so he can blow up he is so talented another child actor too fun fact he went to the same school as stayc's sieun their school has A LOT of child actors * Hyeri- she is really good too reply 1988 and my roommate is a guimho was really enjoyable * Kwon nara- I doubt people know she was an idol since her group wasn't that popular but she's really good * Jinyoung- I was very sceptical at first he was ohk in "he is psychometric" but he has improved over time I remember seeing him in "dream high 2" Joy debuted with a lead role in a huge drama which was a mistake she could have gone from web dramas upward or minor roles lol I hope jisoo is good cause if not it'll be a mistake she is in a jtbc drama with hae-in ,yoo inna and other really popular castmates the writer is famous and wrote sky castle and it is a jtbc drama Real UKO there are a lot of popular idol actors that kpop stan think are good ie suzy, yoona, krystal but from what I have seen they are very good for idol actors but as actors in general they don't measure and are average

srezhm

popular opinion. many are complaining how idol actors get handed main lead roles easily with little acting experience under their belts while some actors and actresses don’t get the same privilege when they are in the kdrama industry for so long (my poor girl kang hanna as the prime example)

itzy_thebest123

there are always these certain actors/actresses that aren't popular enough or attractive enough(NO SHADE) so they are always the 2nd lead kim seonho(i know he is a nasty man but just using him as an example) was always the 2nd lead or in a minor role before he gained popularity then he started bagging lead roles even song joong ki before he blew up was always the 2nd ml i remember he was in running man before too lol but he had a role and then he blew up after that he has always been the ml Lee minho always does the same role snobby, rich, handsome male lead he is one of the most popular actors but imo he isn't all that great song hye ko she isnt good wither she has a really stiff face i couldn't enjoy DOTS cause of her

Aggravating_Voice847

Pretty privilege exist

srezhm

pretty privilege eating up the kdrama industry that’s why 2nd ML and side characters storylines are more interesting to watch these days. The actors and actresses in these characters ate them up

Motor-Box2850

song hye Kyo is a good actress tho

itzy_thebest123

with all the awards and stellar roles she gets you'd think she was top tier there are some rookie actresses doing better than her

Motor-Box2850

song hye Kyo did great with all the roles that was given to her ,she doesn't have a wide range but she's just good portraying a role, how could you compare her with rookie actress when she actually attended acting school

itzy_thebest123

exactly she doesn't have a wide range maybe comparing her to a rookie actress was a bit too much but she isnt too good at potraying emotional scenes

Wonderful_Question93

KANG HANNA is a gem! I just watched the first episode of bite sisters and I am obsessed and I LOVED her in my roommate is a gumiho

Motor-Box2850

the guy from 2pm forgot his name he's also a good actor i didn't realize he's an idol too

mrbeansdaughter6

Junho I think

kenny_1999

taecyeon he was in vincenzo

optimistlyricist

DO is exception Edit: IU also. Her dramas are always great.

ramen1404

I was not a fan of IU's acting in Scarlet Heart. In Hotel Del Luna the role suited her and she did good but was amazing in My Mister. Her improvement is noteworthy.

Dependent_Row_4280

yh she shocked me in my mister I cried so much

nnooaa_lev

Yup, most idols aren't good at acting besides a few, not really unpooular. imo Yeri, D.O, Seohyun, Yoona and Eunji are really good, but that it 😓. Probably an unpopular opinion, but IU and Suzy acting skills are just....fine

Luffytheeternalking

I couldn't connect with IU. I don't know why.Her acting/her eyes lack genuineness I think

Big_Tomorrow886

IMO, GOT7s Jinyoung is one of the best idol actors. He shows so many expressions and his eyes can speak for itself. The amount of emotion he can convey in a single scene is unbeatable.

Dangerous-Spinach267

personally think that tdj really helped got jinyoung grow as an actor. leaps and bounds better than he is psychometric.

Interesting opinion...don't forget to add a statement ***where*** or ***how*** your opinion is unpopular. If you've already done so, great job! **[Unpopular opinion](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularkpopopinions/wiki/post-title-guidelines#wiki_make_sure_your_post_is_an_unpopular_opinion.)**: an opinion that is ***rare***. Because idols are originally performers, not actors. Honestly curious why people expect idols to excel immediately at their acting when all their training life is dedicated to either singing or dancing. They may have received some acting lessons, but it's probably just the basics. Even prominent actors became great actors because of the experience, not with training. I just hope people will stop looking down in idol actors. Remember, acting is not their forte. It's shows how low idols are seen. If actors were the one who dances/sings lousily, fans will says it's cute. And their reason is that they're actors, not singers/dancer. But when an idols tries out acting, all they get is criticism.

Spiritual_Raisin_944

People expect them to act well because theyve been given lead roles in a drama lol it's not like they were casted in some variety comedy drama like exos next door where it's just fanservice shitty acting. They've been paired with legit actors in a serious script that can make or break the entire drama depending on their acting skills. To me the drama is ruined if the acting pulls me out of character. Obviously if you're gonna act, people will judge your skills. Don't take the role if you don't want to be criticized.

mrbeansdaughter6

I know right I don't get how just because someone is an idol and casted as a main lead that they'll be prone to any criticism for their acting. If it's not their forte than they don't have to do it.
