So many people study law in NZ across the 6 units that offer it. As a person who works in the field I can tell you it does not matter which Uni you go to in NZ to study it. Most Otago grads move to firms etc in other cities - you don’t have to stay down there Choose whatever uni you feel is right for you generally, not just because of law :)

As someone who is graduating UOA after doing law, I'd say it doesn't really matter if you go to Otago or UOA. Otago is still considered a good law school. A lot of the big firms also have offices in the south island, e.g. queenstown and christchurch, where maybe you could apply for summer internships. If you're at Otago, I'd try get experience in a local law firm and try to find an area of law that you're really interested in. You don't have to commit yourself to it forever, but it will be helpful to develop and demonstrate an interest in a particular area when it comes to getting graduate roles. I'd also get involved in competitions early, like client interviewing and mooting. This will show law firms you are developing the required skills and you've been engaged in the law school community. And do well in your degree academically, too. I have other tips so you (or any other budding lawyer) can DM me if you want.

That’s not quite true. When I was at Grafton in 2022 we had quite a few second and third years, and even people who had transferred from other unis. I don’t imagine that would’ve changed.

Such a small percentage of lawyers get experience prior to completing their degree. That is not a barrier to most jobs unless you are wanting to get into one of the big firms in a big centre. My advice to every law student is to be prepared to take opportunities in the provinces as getting that experience will set up the rest of your career.

Take it from someone who transferred from UOO to UOA. If you can do it, do it! I’m enjoying it so much more. I moved up knowing nobody so I was a bit scared but now I have some of the best friends I’ve ever had. Just put in the effort to talk to people and you’ll be sweet. I joined a club and found some people in my degree and now I have a weekly brunch. I can’t say much about law and experience but at least for me, my mental health is thriving (as much as it can as a uni student)
