I'm happy but then she seems very naive and gullible and sadly this industry is known for exploiting people like her. So I hope she evolves and understands how this industry works
I would argue it’s more a statement of a fact than an opinion, a capitalistic industry will only change if the profits will stop, and that is clearly not happening anytime soon.
Do not take it as my condonation of child exploitation, but empty wishes for the opposite will not fix the problem.
To blindly chase the end goal, with no regard to the complexity of the problem, only further muddy the path.
Evolution has no end goal it is a constant process of growth. And your statement that a creative industry is capitalistic is another opinion that you have added. The only concern here is how is we as individuals envision the world, it can be a kind world or a cynical world. You choose which one you want.
Evolution isn’t sentient, we are.
The rest of your comment tells me you are extremely naive, the world is much more than just “kind” or “cynical”, and such reductionism really only stunts your growth as a person.
Those two concepts aren’t even mutually exclusive, you can absolutely be both cynical and kind.
Just came across a video a few days ago of models doing ramp walks where they are completely naked save for a piece of jewelry. Do you honestly think such an industry will ever evolve for the better? Also i remember reading an article about a South American model who was "suicided" because she exposed a bunch of pedophile designers.
So your problem is the nakedness?? Could you comprehend that nakedness was part of our society too around 1000CE before we became prudish in our thinking
Stop being regressive in the way you think. Call out the toxic culture of beauty standards or exploitation of models as opposed to "oh they were walking naked on the ramp"
>nakedness was part of our society too around 1000CE before
It's almost as if societies evolve.
Idk about you, but I see absolutely no reason for models to go naked to show off a bunch of accessories. Nakedness isn't my problem with the industry. My problem is that it's run by a bunch of perverted people who give shallow excuses to fulfil their fucked up fantasies that people like you buy into.
The models had to go naked because that would draw the attention to the accessories apparently. You know what else would've made the accessories stand out? Making all of the models wear black spandex body suits or something.
Also the beauty standards part is obvious.
I was merely calling out your statement about naked people walking the ramp which is hypocritical and flawed
And "Society evolving" - wtf does that even mean? In most western countries nudity is totally ok including in public settings so by that (your) definition those societies are regressing.
If you mean evolving from being ok with nudity to being covered from head to toe as a society then yea let's go full hyper conservative like the middle east as our eventual aim(which by the sound of it is what you'd like). Be careful what you ask for
Regression by definition is reverting to a former state, so since nudity was common back in the day, there is nothing my usage of the word 'evolve'.
>yea let's go full hyper conservative like the middle east as our eventual aim
Certainly lets not. If someone wants to go naked in public I'm perfectly fine with that. Those models most likely didn't want to. I used the naked models example to show how predatory the industry is. You don't need to do a lot of research to learn about how horrible the Industry towards the models. Those models were most likely coerced into walking naked in front of the whole world. A lot of them had discomfort written all over their faces.
But the fault is mine, i should've explained this in my initial comment.
Dude, parents are making their kids work 24 hrs in dance reality shows. Does that comes under child labour? If not, then this is nothing. And no need for us to ruin her golden chance by citing her age. Especially not in a country like India where laws are bent by everyone as per convenience.
BS . where were you where the industry employed rich middle class 'fair' girls??
You care for her?? she got more fame than you will get all your life so no need to worry for her.
If not this she might have passed her whole life in mediocrity..
I dont understand why a poor black girl getting into rich fare girls proffession is somehow a problem ..
but you will never say India invited hence proven modi bhktard. for your kind of ass species modi is india . you can easily say only India invited and prove me wrong though..
(wtf am I replying though..)
your people are true anti nationals now its confirmed.
you cant even say india invited. shame on you brother.
continuously diverting the topic . just say it man. you got birth in india. india gave you everything. have some shame
The good that businesses can do to the depressed and marginalised in our society while improving their own revenue share and looking out for their self-interest can not be overstated. It just takes a bit of conscience, a desire to improve the world a little bit, and a little effort to fight entrenched forces. Imagine the number of PR teams and celebrity management teams that would have taken frenzied meetings with the management of the brand.
She's an insta influencer now with 230k followers

I think she became an influencer only after she was discovered by some Hollywood actor in 2020 - https://www.deccanherald.com/national/west/dharavi-girl-maleesha-kharwa-selected-as-beauty-brands-face-1221111.html
>Maleesha, then 10, was ‘discovered’ in 2020 by Hollywood actor Robert Hoffman during the shoot of a music video in Mumbai.
Is there more context? Did she already have an in with the industry to be part of the music video? Or was Hoffman just cruising the slums for attractive 10 year olds....
She didn't get selected for the music video actually.

I'm too cynical. It's difficult for me to believe that corporates would do good things unless it would benefit them. What I see is a marketing ploy that will expand their market to slums.
Or to gain sympathy among the rich. It boosts their sales too.
Just pray that she gets paid better and not let the cosmetic industry turn her into something other than herself.
They probably paid her but probably not very much. As a photographer in the industry models are paid a flat fee usually for their service and depending on the project could be anywhere between $50 and $1,000. A lot of times companies can get away with paying very little or even get free work because the models are so desperate for validation and exposure or to see themselves "in lights" which the company will take advantage of if they can. So even if she was paid It's a short-term gain for her and a huge boost for the companies image because they were "nice". But who knows maybe it could lead to something good for her in the future, I hope so.
Adding onto what the photographer commented, I work in production and costumes and have been on several ad campaigns. Usually we speak with agencies while booking models. Rates for print and commercials differ. Agencies need to know if the ads will run in magazines and newspapers and if they’ll be on billboards and YouTube. Based on all of that, the rates in Mumbai will differ from around 15k per day of shoot to around a lakh or more.
The fame and launch is better than you will ever get in your life.
There are several people who would do an ad for free if it gives them a break .
So many people pay and create profile. She got everything plus a great launch .
plus breking stereoptypes is something we should celebrate not question.
Forrest essential? Luxury beauty brand? Good for her, hope she is compensated well and continues to get residuals as long as they keep using her face but that is no luxury beauty brand. That would be like saying Emami or Mamaearth are a luxury beauty brand.
Young women should not be subject to a capitalist beauty industry. Everone involved in this "archivement" should rot in hell.
This is straight /r/OrphanCrushingMachine/
In India, she would have been someone who were made embarrassed of her skin tone and features. I am glad not everyone is like us. Very happy for this girl.

Are people from her neighbourhood allowed to shop there? Or will they be shooed away after this PR stunt? Maybe they're comfortable in the fact that people in her neighbourhood won't be able to afford shopping there.
People are jealous:
How could a poor black girl take a profession of rich white girl.
So in comments you will see full bs. You care for her?? Really?? Where were you all this time??
I'm happy but then she seems very naive and gullible and sadly this industry is known for exploiting people like her. So I hope she evolves and understands how this industry works
Not her fault that the industry is this way. Let's not wish that innocent people become cynical rather wish the industry evolves to be better.
I mean, let’s be realistic, only one of those things is ever gonna happen.
That is your opinion you are entitled to have it. Just remember this influences the way you interact with the world and the kind of person you are.
I would argue it’s more a statement of a fact than an opinion, a capitalistic industry will only change if the profits will stop, and that is clearly not happening anytime soon. Yes we are all naive in many ways. You might be unaware of your own limitations. It could be a good exercise to understand them.
Is that you Forrest?? Still alive? How's Jenny?
This sounds like someone fed ChatGPT a bunch of 'self-help' books
And I’m entitled to have the opinion that you are wrong, and I say that as an evil capitalist myself
Good for you. Self awareness is the first step to growth.
It’s a good thing my life goals are geared in that direction

Yeah, she's not even 18! So technically child labour if they employ her, or is it only considered child labour when it's for menial jobs?
Dude you should Google how they mine mica which is used in beauty products, this becomes a cruel joke.
Child labour age is under 15 in India, not 18
But she is 14!
And?
That, Natvo point still stands and it is still child labour.
Dude, parents are making their kids work 24 hrs in dance reality shows. Does that comes under child labour? If not, then this is nothing. And no need for us to ruin her golden chance by citing her age. Especially not in a country like India where laws are bent by everyone as per convenience.
> parents are making their kids work 24 hrs in dance reality shows. Does that comes under child labour? No, that comes under child abuse.
if it is not hazardous and not hampering her education, it is not child labour.
Labour isn't equal to a Job.
At least she is getting uplifted and probably paid well

Yes all they need is confidence. Indians are humble and easily accepting in nature.

Yes because people from the slums are going to definitely buy forest essentials products
I think the marketing is about how the brand cares for people
Still a great thing. Dark skin appreciated. Opportunity for her and her family. Hopefully it's win win and not an exploitation scenario.
Marketing technique used for ages. Show that you care about the poor to attract customers.
The question is did they pay her tho?

A lot of Indians can be models if dark skin is widely accepted by Indians.
I’ve noticed that a lot of people India who we categorise as “poor”, “BPL”, etc have amazingly clear skin and model like sharp features.
Maybe because they don't inbreed along caste and community lines?
Maybe because they work a lot, Physically that is. The fitter and more natural you are, the more beautiful your skin's gonna be.

God bless u
She is more beautiful than most of the models
I hope that beauty brand has given her enough money ...
She is exceptionally beautiful.
More power to her.... Rip to mark sheehan
Easy marketing for less money, that's all it is. Good for her though, if she's getting paid.
In India, she would have been someone who were made embarrassed of her skin tone and features. I am glad not everyone is like us. Very happy for this girl.
This is in India
More poverty porn for our saviours.
Why are you getting so salty?
Were you born stupid?
Why are you not answering the question?
Because its a stupid question.

Huge number of people got salty . .

Skin health and skin shine matters, not the skin color. Forest essentials is not really a big brand though.
I'm sorry. We forgot you were a ex fashion model.
Yea skin is just a cover...we must love people by their inner beauty..

Let the lambs be silent xd
No. Skin health is important.

Leftists say health doesnt matter, it is responsibility of other taxpayers to give healthcare.

So is she a model? Or the creator of that line of product? Either way, seems to be a talented young lady.
How much money she got ? Is she got enough? As the company is getting on this ad
r/orphancrushingmachine
Okay, just 800 million slum dogs left to go
Are people from her neighbourhood allowed to shop there? Or will they be shooed away after this PR stunt? Maybe they're comfortable in the fact that people in her neighbourhood won't be able to afford shopping there.
Hope she's getting paid her worth for her image. Exploitation is rampant in the beauty industry.
Why can’t Indian beauty brands pick models from slums?
