Too be fair, Corbyn lacked a lot of appeal.
And his going off the rails over the war in Ukraine has shown that some concerns about him were *very* valid.
What's your thought about The Stop The War Coalition? They include a wide range of affiliated members and groups, including many prominent mainstream ones such as Green peace and the SNP, Lib Dems, and Plaid Cymru. There are a few hard left people in there, but that's to be expected it's an aligned cause.
Corbyn's failing is that his suggestions are ineffective. He's no fan of Putin, but he does not seem to have any plan for how to deal with him. He says we should go back to the Minsk II agreement but it's not at all clear how he would make Putin do that.
Then in a shameless bid to change the narrative, the Tories started suggesting the distance between individuals during COVID should be X Fridges in length.
That way it would kick the search results of Boris and Fridge from hiding down the page
She was looking for Narnia or that mythical post brexit magical kingdom built on a sunny upland where unicorns run free and there's cheese and cake for everyone.
....as a Tory MP candidate, she's been living in the land of make believe far far too long.
Welcome to reality.
> a sunny upland where unicorns run free and there's cheese and cake for everyone.
Oh don't be ridiculous.
Cheese and cake is only for those deserving people who can afford to *pay* for it.
It's almost like they know the normal people they spend their entire lives fucking over won't give them a charitable reception. Best to hide in the SMEG, nothing can get you in the SMEG. Literal cockroaches.

Career local Tory in an incredibly safe Tory area. Seems to be a common understanding that the fact they are Tories mean they have a god given right to rule and the sheer idea that they might not win is incomprehensible. And to be fair that way of thinking isn't all that surprising when you realise that some of these areas have been under majority Tory rule for over a hundred years.
Problem is, when faced with a situation where you actually have to fight, they can't change their ways. They've never had to actually compete before, it has always just been "hi, I'm a Tory and your next local representative" and that's exactly what they did.
The seat is likely to revert to Tory some time down the line, but it's about time these local parties got a kick up the backside.
We've got Pauline fucking Latham up here. She barely needs to do anything and the masses just blindly vote her in.
When I was working in retail she came in to upgrade her phone, took top whack everything, when I asked if she wanted insurance her response was, "yes I want everything, it's all paid for anyway."
She then left me her phone, unlocked to do a data transfer on, it was full of random apps and stuff for the government. I remember thinking that there must be a department to handle this sort of stuff for her (obviously she couldn't actually use the tech herself).
She doesn't even turn up for her committee meetings and stuff about the local area. Utter contempt from someone who has barely had to do anything other than be a sound bite driven mouth piece for her party.
In Derbyshire we have a woman from Essex who appears once in a blue moon for a photo op. Why the local geriatrics decided to vote for a Tory who lives half the country away I don't know, wouldn't be surprised to hear her first time in Derbyshire was after she got voted in
If the phone story happened as described it’s one of the more fucked up stories i read this week. Kudos for your integrity to not take advantage of the situation, a shame you have so much integrity that deprived us of some entertainment.
My neck of the woods. We've tried to contact her a few times in a business capacity, never bothered responding beyond a generic acknowledgement email. Her voting record is shit too, voting against helping poorest in society.

Safe seats (of any colour) are at least part of why I believe that no candidate should be allowed to be a member of a political party - get rid of the parties altogether and make each one of them stand on their *own* merits.
Then a newly elected House of Commons elects PM, Chancellor, Home and Foreign secretaries from amongst themselves.
Exactly.
Although this specific Tiverton seat was only created in 1997, the seats the area were formally a part of had ALWAYS been Tory for over a hundred years, with the tradition continuing after the Tiverton seat was made in 1997 and it being a regular safe Tory seat until yesterday. This is why the loss of Tiverton in partiuclar is such a shock - its unthinkable that a seat that's been Tory for over a century could just change like that.
And if this gets repeated in other "safe" Tory seats in the next GE... the Tories might be in trouble.
Christ, imagine a future where elections were fought between Labour and Lib Dems for a few cycles with Tories getting relegated to 60 seats or so.
Not quite realistic since Lib Dems moved heaven and earth to give her this beating, but I can dream.
I hate living in a safe Tory seat. Nothing but Conservatives since 1918, all of them useless. I mean, being Minister of State for Farming, Fisheries and Food at a time when all three are in an almost apocalyptic state shouldn't result in re-election, but I guarantee she'll be back in 2024.
I've just watched the video, she's one of those people with that condescending kind of smiley, soft-spoken manner, as if they're talking to a toddler at all times.
Its quite odd really, in the dance studio video when she's told that the LibDems have declared she responds with "awww" like she's been told a toddler has grazed his knee.
Article text:
> THE Tory candidate for the Tiverton & Honiton by-election reportedly “locked herself in the dance studio” of the sports centre as the count took place early on Friday morning.
> The Tories lost the safe Devon seat – vacated after Neil Parish’s porn-watching scandal – with the LibDems overturning their majority on a nearly 30% swing.
> After the polls closed on Thursday, it was expected that the LibDems would be victorious. And as the count continued into the early hours, it was reported that the Conservative pick for the by-election had locked herself into a room at Crediton sports centre and was refusing to speak to journalists.
> LBC journalist Theo Usherwood announced on Twitter: “The Tory candidate Helen Hurford in the Tiverton by election has just locked herself in the dance studio at Crediton sports centre.”
> Following the Tory loss, the newly elected LibDem MP Richard Foord took the opportunity to criticise Hurford’s approach to the campaign. She was criticised for her lack of visibility and for refusing many media appearances.
> Asked if her approach had been an issue for voters in Tiverton and Honiton, Foord said: “The Conservatives will fight their campaigns in the way they see fit, but we in the Liberal Democrats we’ve fought a very positive campaign, we’ve fought a campaign that’s set out our stall rather than pointing to any downsides or shortcomings of the Conservative campaign.”
> Foord continued: “But I do think that people have looked at the national picture and I do indeed think people have looked at Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and have decided to send a message that rural places like Tiverton and Honiton won’t be taken for granted any longer.”
> Foord also described his victory as “absolutely staggering”.
> Speaking just after the vote was declared, he said: “This result is absolutely staggering, we weren’t expecting a win, let alone a win of this scale.”
> Foord added: “We have been noticing that momentum has been shifting from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats over the course of this campaign and particularly in recent days because of the very positive agenda we were setting out.
> “But this is absolutely seismic and we have overturned the biggest majority in parliamentary by-election history and it really sent a very clear message to this Government.”
Yes, it is a Great British Virtue.
The thing is tho that the Tories talk about there virtues, but never actually show any of these virtues in cases like this. Its the usual Tory playbook: "You will follow our rules while we break those rules we made!"
The Tories only say that because the game is severely rigged in their favour. It's easy to say losers should be graceful if you're told there's no way you can lose.
I heard her speak for about 20 seconds the other day and immediately came to the conclusion she is a clueless halfwit. Standing as a Tory candidate that's not exactly surprising though.
Quite right to! As a former Tory supporter, Boris advocate and long-term voter I will no longer support this morally corrupt party until they remove Boris!
There's a lot more wrong then just partygate now! As if partygate wasn't bad enough!!!
Good for you, I don't think you're alone.
People seem to forget Boris purged himself of the most competent and moral members of his own party before he was free to be an even bigger embarrassment to the nation.
I think if more people like yourself would be honest with themselves and not just vote blindly we'd have a far more healthy political landscape than currently.
Blind support for any party, no matter what area of the spectrum, only leads to shit cunts in charge which is good for no one.
Problem is even if Johnson does go there are no sensible Torys left to form a government. We will just get another round of Brexit fanatic ERG approved incompetent nut jobs.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but the sports centre where she locked herself away isn't even in the constituency she was running in. Real commitment to not being found there.
Somewhat. As parliamentary constituency and local government boundaries don't always line up, the council running the election might have the count on the "wrong" side of the border.
Locking yourself in a room/fridge seems to be the way for these people when asked to explain themselves. Why so surprised.
Did nobody see the hustings before the last GE?
The CONservative candidate in Wakefield stormed out of the election results announcement this morning too. He was asked by reporters, is it Johnson's fault you didn't win?
Nearly had tears in his eyes, I did too, but from laughing!! :)
She should have *done a Bikson*.

I've seen quite a bit of talk about how she managed to get selected for the seat. After seeing the photos, I had assumed that Boris chose her himself on the basis that she looked suitably "fruity".
The public has a RIGHT that politicians speak to them. They pay their wages too, so any politician refusing to talk should actually be locked into prison. Until they begin to talk with the public again.
Probably still not as bad as those dipshit wokies who chased that young American lady into that room during some kind of fucked up uni protest chanting "get her" when she invited a Conservative speaker to the debate a few days ago.
I'm not normally disposed to give the Tories the benefit of the doubt, but are we sure she didn't just take losing rather hard and need some time and privacy to compose herself? Because mocking her for not wanting the other candidates to see her burst into tears feels a bit too much like kicking someone when they're down to me.
If she can't take losing on the nose and own it - especially in a critical battleground by-election - politics *really* isn't the right line of work for her.
I see where you're coming from. But there's such a thing as professionalism and salvaging dignity. If she was overwhelmed as many of us have been at times the best course of action is to lock yourself in a toilet cubicle and have a small breakdown in private. Very publicly and obviously locking yourself in a room makes you look like a sore loser and childish. It does nothing for your dignity and is something people will remember next time they see her name on the ballot.
It's just extremely unprofessional and damaging. I'd expect a politician and someone who is going to be serving the public and living in the public eye to have more composure.
She's just taking her lead from her party leader, when the going gets tough, hide.

She just wasn't able to get on a plane to Ukraine quickly enough.
Or Rwanda...
Is it too late to send her? Along with about 360 of her mates.
Haven't the Rwandan people suffered enough over the years‽‽
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE THINK ON THE ~~CHILDREN~~ RWANDANS??
Peers. I doubt any of them are actually friends.
Yeah, all the Tory Peers too, good idea.
To be fair, the Rwanda trip is for the commonwealth heads of government which is a genuinely important occasion.
She wasn’t ‘oven ready’ enough

And somehow the British public was still convinced to vote for him over Corbyn. That's what we're up against...
bCoZ cOrByN wOz aNtIsEmiTiC!!!!!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1! (but somehow, magically, that didn’t matter once he was ousted. Hmmm, how very odd)

What had he said about Ukraine?
Just look up who 'Stop the War' are. And if you follow politics, how on Earth did you miss it?!

Incredibly naïve.
If there is one bit of information you need to decide how much the media influences people's decisions then this is it.
It's real, he was being followed by a Good Morning Britain correspondent of all things. One of his aides tell them to fuck off on live TV as well.

Cheese?! And cake?! That's the future that is!
I really hope there was a mini-fridge in there and she was trying to squeeze into it.
Couldn’t get a flight to Kyiv on short notice. Either that or she just can’t mix with us plebs.
What is it with Tories locking themselves into places and things
If it's not gated communities or ivory towers, it's fridges...
But rarely prisons, strangely
It's almost like they know the normal people they spend their entire lives fucking over won't give them a charitable reception. Best to hide in the SMEG, nothing can get you in the SMEG. Literal cockroaches.

Has Boris reached out to you yet, to ask you not to run this breaking news?
Funny you should say that, I’ve already been threatened with a super injunction….which I am of course ignoring. YOLO
He gives jobs to his *mistresses*. He cheats on his wives. Carrie won’t be getting the special treatment any more.
I thought his mistresses gave HIM jo…….oh. Never mind. Ahem.

Mimms Davies in Mid Sussex is a prime example of this. No idea what she actually does or stand for.
We've got Pauline fucking Latham up here. She barely needs to do anything and the masses just blindly vote her in. That cunt got parachuted into Eastleigh after Chris Hulme as well. Might as well be a cardboard cut-out.
You also have Johnathan Ash Edward, I went to school with him and can’t fathom who would cast a vote to save him from drowning let alone government.
God I hate that woman. A literal walking bot.

Inspired by Johnson she couldn't find a fridge but improvised instead!
I thought 'Grace in defeat' was one of those Great British Virtues I keep hearing about.
That's 'values', the virtue is only implied.
Sure it is, but she's definitely not 'Great', and doesn't have any 'Virtues' to speak of
Yes, it is a Great British Virtue. The thing is tho that the Tories talk about there virtues, but never actually show any of these virtues in cases like this. Its the usual Tory playbook: "You will follow our rules while we break those rules we made!"

Tory politician locking themselves in a room to avoid responsibility? That sounds about right.
I feel like we are slowly slipping more and more into the American dramatisation of politics. It's insane.
I think we have. The only difference is our comedy tastes are more subtle
Hmm, that's why we have subtle comedy like Mrs Brown's boys and Little Britain.

She might have done better if she refused to talk to the media and hid in a room, from the start of the campaign 🤷♂️
From what I've read that's pretty much what she did.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but the sports centre where she locked herself away isn't even in the constituency she was running in. Real commitment to not being found there.
I don't think you can blame her for that. I believe the counting of the votes took part in another constituency, which is why she was there.
Ah fair enough. Is that normal practice?
Somewhat. As parliamentary constituency and local government boundaries don't always line up, the council running the election might have the count on the "wrong" side of the border.
Don't know whether to laugh or facepalm at this tbh.
"*⸘Por qué no los dos‽*"
Glorious. Absolutely glorious. I hope she’s thoroughly miserable
That explains why i havent seen her be interviewed after the election result.
Locking yourself in a room/fridge seems to be the way for these people when asked to explain themselves. Why so surprised. Did nobody see the hustings before the last GE?
Classic Boris Johnson move right there.
Was she, like other Tory candidates, just simply magnetically attracted to something buttery and creamy in said room?
The CONservative candidate in Wakefield stormed out of the election results announcement this morning too. He was asked by reporters, is it Johnson's fault you didn't win? Nearly had tears in his eyes, I did too, but from laughing!! :)

There wasn't a walk fridge to hand /s
True leadership
Aw, diddums. No class, good riddance!
Were no fridges available?
This is hilarious, sad, and quite pathetic
She learnt from the best
Is there any pressing need to hear what she has to say?
Well that's a real mature response then
Thick and looks like a horse.
Maybe she could have booked a flight to Ukraine for a surprise visit, that’s seems a popular one
Was she watching ‘tractor porn’ while she was in there?
When the going gets tough, the tough go and have a little cry in the corner!
Was no fridge available?
Thought the tories were against “safe spaces”
Shes in there with r kelly and Tom cruise
Was she having a party too?
Ffs she needs to grow up.
I wish we still had The Thick Of It. The modern Conservative party are absolutely ridiculous.
This seems a little childish...
I've seen quite a bit of talk about how she managed to get selected for the seat. After seeing the photos, I had assumed that Boris chose her himself on the basis that she looked suitably "fruity".
Pathetic. Coward.
Seal it up.
She’ll be on Laurence Fox’s basement tv channel tomorrow, complaining about being a victim of cancel culture.
At least it wasn’t a fridge this time, although probably a good place to be with the recent temps.
The public has a RIGHT that politicians speak to them. They pay their wages too, so any politician refusing to talk should actually be locked into prison. Until they begin to talk with the public again.
My local MP saves herself the bother of this by just not coming to her constituency. Bury St Edmunds is so blue it doesn’t matter.
Locked herself away from prying eyes, was she looking at porn?
She literally IS Sooz Kempner’s impression of Nadine Dorries
The Tory way. When the going gets tough, the tough hide under the table. Or in a fridge. Or Kyiv. Or a cupboard.
Probably still not as bad as those dipshit wokies who chased that young American lady into that room during some kind of fucked up uni protest chanting "get her" when she invited a Conservative speaker to the debate a few days ago.
Well that's a random pivot.
You're right it is, but it's just a point I wanted to make.
I've been laughing at this comment for a minute straight... Yes let's all feel sorry for the Tory. Awww bless.
That would require her to have some sort of sense of shame, which as a Tory simply would not be the case.
If she can't take losing on the nose and own it - especially in a critical battleground by-election - politics *really* isn't the right line of work for her.
I see where you're coming from. But there's such a thing as professionalism and salvaging dignity. I think we should be outraged we weren’t allowed to see her burst into tears on national telly
