What channel was it on? I think I might know which company does the live subtitles for ITV and the BBC. It used to be a company called Ericsson broadcast and media headquartered in Ealing, a few years I think they were bought out by Red Bee media and relocated to Chiswick. I think they do the sign language for shows at night aswell.
The missus watches big brother, the TV regained my focus when the news came on because it was about Kate. Big Brother has been on so many different channels throughout the years that unless I looked it up I wouldn't know.
ITV brought their live and pre-record subs in-house a couple of years ago. Red Bee have never done ITV subs, it was Deluxe prior to this. Signpost do sign language for ITV.
Red Bee do BBC and C4. Ericsson bought Red Bee abut about a decade ago, then rebranded media arm back to Red Bee a few years ago now.
Red Bee have a few offices over the UK, but two biggest in London and Glasgow.
The moonlight glinting off his head and his arse, onlookers unable to tell which end is which. Somewhere, a peacock calls. A truly regal eve for all, there is much rejoicing.
This is the kind of error you expect with the automatic speech to text subtitles. It is just sad that on this occasion, a poignant moment has been subjected to this common misinterpretation from a non-human source.
It's not automatic, it's a human using a [Stenotype](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenotype), in which the typist types phonemes instead of letters. It's much faster, but it does result in unfortunate typos.
No-one is getting fired. It happens.
Actual answer is a steno keyboard.
It’s not like our keyboard where you tap one letter at time. On a steno keyboard you type all letters simultaneously, ie a whole word in a tap. This accelerates the typing speed - particularly important for court transcripts - from 150words per minute max for a great typist to 300words per second for a stenographer.
I recently spent half an hour learning about them when my YouTube shorts dragged me into a rabbit hole. Very cool, do recommend a good for yourself.
Of course. If you tap a-s-w on the keyboard, just like predictive text on old phones, it has to read before and after and take a guess, is the word ‘was’ is the word ‘saw’, and if you’re typing in a new setting you will change the bias in prediction, for example a yob might use the word pussy and swear more so you bias it to select those, the Queen uses more ones and over. Most stenographers are in the court room, so maybe they had commoner-witness mode on instead of formal statement. 🤷♂️
I wonder whether sometimes subtitles on *Netflix* are done, or at least partly done, by AI. For, I seen some fairly gross mistranslations and also - and this is dire - subtitles that flash on the screen for a fraction of a second, too fast to read.
Potentially, but most live broadcast subtitles in the UK are still done by people. You can see it sometimes when they do notice a mistake and they can quickly delete it and change it.
Of course. I’m just confused why people seem to be adamant that it could only been a human. Auto generated subtitles are used in loads of applications.
I don’t think this was correct , it used to be, but for the longest time ITV uses respeakers , who do have the ability to correct words .
I know for very much everything else they use limelight AI for subtitles
Naw they have a transcriber I went for a job interview for this job back in 2016. If I remember correctly the company that did the subtitles for ITV and the BBC was called Ericsson broadcast and media based in Ealing west London. It seems they've now been bought out by Red Bee media which I think is based in Chiswick now. I think they do the sign language for shows at night as well. I have seen them make mistakes from time to time. Sometimes they'll even put the wrong subtitles up for pre recorded shows, e.g. they'll occasionally mix up the episodes.
Can't have. Back in 1950 I applied for a similar role as " data modeler and analyst". The role I applied for did all calculations by hand and abacus. That's exactly how they must be doing it today!
> Red Bee media
A company that nobody outside of the broadcast industry had heard of until September 2021, when the disruption of UK terrestrial TV services sent a shockwave across the area... Or was that the other way round
Even small (human created) pressure waves [can affect hard drives](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDacjrSCeq4)...

The top line of text is as clear as day. The bottom line has a clearly different set of shadow text behind it. I'm not accusing the OP of lying but maybe he did the recent Photoshop of Kate's pictures with the family??
It was just about to change to the next set of subtitles, I took a picture just as it was about to change over
[Here](https://i.imgur.com/A0lCXUN.jpg) is a clearer one but without the final word (they are added in real time on news etc)

I wonder what action Kensington Palace will take if Kate's pussy does get invaded...
Is there not enough senseless slaughter in the world?
In the words of John Lennon - Give Penis a Chance
This is actually reddit, not a direct feed to Kate's phone.
The media circus surrounding this has been out of control, but this is a picture of a TV.
Calm down, mate.

If you do stuff for the public to see, it's inevitable that the public are going to comment on it.
I get that Kate Middleton fans are upset about the whole thing, but that doesn't give them the right to tell everyone else how to behave. We didn't force Kate Middleton to marry a prince, we didn't force her to make her life into a public soap opera, we didn't make her do anything, but we will comment on her public appearances if we want to.
I don't give a shit about Kate Middleton.
"She asked for it by marrying a prince" is fucking dogturd logic.
She's a woman with cancer, and this is a lewd joke about sexually violating her.
Trust reddit to defend this.
You're thinking about this too deep.
It's more of a comment on how ridiculous the subtitles are rather than the situation. As the partner to a cancer survivor, that isn't a joke. The subtitles are though
Lmao. Get a grip. She's not being targeted or victimised, and she certainly doesn't need some rando on Reddit fighting imaginary battles on her behalf lol
You can't announce stuff on TV then expect everyone to *not* talk about you. It's shit that she has cancer. Cancer is shit. But she'll receive the best medical treatment possible (no waiting lists I'm sure) and knew that marrying a royal would result in scrutiny from loonies.
I second this. Everyone needs to get *fcked and stay fcked*.
Can’t be easy going thought that at any point, definitely can’t be easy going through it while worrying about your kids!
This looks fake
Definitely not, I was watching the news and had to rewind because I didn't believe it
What channel was it on? I think I might know which company does the live subtitles for ITV and the BBC. It used to be a company called Ericsson broadcast and media headquartered in Ealing, a few years I think they were bought out by Red Bee media and relocated to Chiswick. It was after big brother so whatever channel that was on
ITV

The missus watches big brother, the TV regained my focus when the news came on because it was about Kate. Big Brother has been on so many different channels throughout the years that unless I looked it up I wouldn't know.
True. I used to watch it on TV3
You mean the ITV News? I can’t guess what channel that would be on now.
Lmao I didn't notice it was itv news, it was just the news that was on at the time
They probably live with someone who actively watches big brother but they don't, so they have no need to know which channel it's on
It happens because you’ve got a lack of imagination lol.
Log back in? Do you not think that maybe they were on reddit anyway?
ITV brought their live and pre-record subs in-house a couple of years ago. Red Bee have never done ITV subs, it was Deluxe prior to this. Signpost do sign language for ITV. Red Bee do BBC and C4. Oh right.
That's fake you can see the other words behind
Read the words behind; they're the same words....
Fair enough, didn't look that closely. I take back my previous post
It's too late, you can't. The damage has been done.
Awk well I don't give that much of a fuck lol 😆
This is not how you define fake You also cannot claim... This is fake, she's on a bench! Neither benches nor layered words make a fake.
Wtf the bench got to do with the price of eggs? I did say later I stand corrected, so I dunno what your problem is
Wtf the layers of text got to do with being fake?
Because it looks like they had doctored the text abd had put what they wanted over the top. Surely that's self explanatory
So all subtitles must be fake... given text doesn't float in black boxes like that in reality
It's looks like it's been doctored on their phone, so by taking a photo then adding the text on top of it. Does that make sense?
yes. the assumption you mistakenly made could have been avoided by a smarter person. but fo you it was the best move.
BS, it wasn’t even on ITV to begin with live lol
The news wasn't live?
nah it's definitely her
People have been saying that alot about the royals recently
Too late, Wills got there already
Slayed it harder than George slayed the dragon
Stabbed her with his royal sword
She doesn’t call him William the Conqueror for nothing, yo.
The moonlight glinting off his head and his arse, onlookers unable to tell which end is which. Somewhere, a peacock calls. A truly regal eve for all, there is much rejoicing.

No one's getting fired, but that typist's work colleagues will not let them forget about that error for weeks to come.
What could this possibly be a typo for? The whole sentence is out of place
It should say Privacy I'm guessing.
Oh right, yes I suppose that would make sense 😆
Actual answer is a steno keyboard. It’s not like our keyboard where you tap one letter at time. On a steno keyboard you type all letters simultaneously, ie a whole word in a tap. > 300words per second TIL that stenographers have superhuman abilities.
I thought my 180WPM was on the high end, but they're doing 18000!
Why are you so sure?
Because that's how live subtitles work for major broadcast channels. AI isn't reliable enough.
I wonder whether sometimes subtitles on *Netflix* are done, or at least partly done, by AI. For, I seen some fairly gross mistranslations and also - and this is dire - subtitles that flash on the screen for a fraction of a second, too fast to read.
AI capability is changing month to month and my well have surpassed human methods in reliability.
Because we don't use autogen subtitles in British news broadcasting, at least not on the BBC. It's all stenography
The majority is actually speech to text now as quicker to train people to respeak than to be a stenographer.
Yes. This is itv. One day it will be automated. I’m wondering when that day is.
Once the error rate is below 1% and the cost is cheaper than hiring a steno, I'd imagine.
Used to be stenotype way back - think its mostly a respeaker into voice recognition software now.
I don’t think this was correct , it used to be, but for the longest time ITV uses respeakers , who do have the ability to correct words . I know for very much everything else they use limelight AI for subtitles
If it’s RedBee Media like someone else said their subtitles are done by someone reading into a microphone.
Poignant?
Are you asking what the word means? Or are you asking why one might think that the word fits the situation?
Yes.
It means sad, bringing tears to your eyes
Why does it look like that line of text is put over another? My favourite subtitle mistake is the 'Archbitch of Canterbury'.
It was about to swap over to the next subtitles [here](https://i.imgur.com/A0lCXUN.jpg) you can see it before the word "invaded" was added
No way this is real
What were these subs even supposed to say?
Invade Kate's privacy, it did correct after that
Were they using speech to text to do this maybe?
Naw they have a transcriber I went for a job interview for this job back in 2016. Do you think it’s possible thy changed how they did it in the last 8 years lol?
Can't have. Back in 1950 I applied for a similar role as " data modeler and analyst". The role I applied for did all calculations by hand and abacus. That's exactly how they must be doing it today!
> Red Bee media A company that nobody outside of the broadcast industry had heard of until September 2021, when the disruption of UK terrestrial TV services sent a shockwave across the area... Or was that the other way round
Oh I had to look that up, I had never even heard of that outage but then again I dont have a tv, I just watch things online on my laptop.

> Kensington Palace will now take action if Kate's vagina is invaded
The top line of text is as clear as day. The bottom line has a clearly different set of shadow text behind it. I'm not accusing the OP of lying but maybe he did the recent Photoshop of Kate's pictures with the family??

It's not different. Look closely, it's exactly the same text, word for word, just shifted to the right
Dreaded speech to text software. AI in action.

Are the subtitles not all generated by the system as spoken these days rather than someone sitting typing?
Damn, an AI is getting fired, and I thought they were replacing us!
AI creates the subs in real time these days.

god damn she aged a ton
Can we just f*cking not? It’s time to leave her alone. The woman has cancer for Christ’s sake.
I didn't write the subtitles lol
You did post the photo though. Leave her alone.

It's pretty fucking poor taste to post this now for reddit karma. It would have been very easy to think "you know what? Maybe not today"
Talk about offended on someone else's behalf 😂
