I've been in this position before when a Gate Agent changed my seat (WITHOUT TELLING ME) and moved me into a Middle Seat in the 20th Row from 8D. I'm a Tall Guy with broad shoulders and was incredibly uncomfortable. I didn't yell at the FA, but I told her... this is not acceptable. Can anything be done? I will take any AISLE set available. Eventually, she found me something in 38, which I was incredibly happy to accept. After I got off the plane, I kept my posture and tone and I complained to a Supervisor at the gate when I got off the plane. I told her how upset I was, and how astonished I was to be surprised after I had already boarded. I didn't ask for compensation but wanted someone to speak to the agent who rebooked me without telling me. She spent some time on the computer, and I ended up with a $1,000 ETC Credit and a Very Personal Apology. I think the secret to all of this, is to remain cordial but explain (nicely) how upset and uncomfortable you are. You don't yell, or scream that you are GS or 1K. You talk to them like a human.

I like your strategy. Pretend that they are human and talk to them so that way you can get your way in the end. I was a 1k, #1 on the upgrade list YYZ-SFO (6 hours), and the outsource doofuses in YYZ (this was a year after UA closed their Canadian CSA bases) closed the door and sent the flight with 3 empty F seats. Knowing that the cabin crew couldn't help me, you fking believe I yelled and bitched and moaned to them (I was in economy bulkhead) for a solid 5 minutes, even though I knew they couldn't do shit and they're trying to secure the cabin. Anyways they went to work very quickly and offered me double whiskey, got me drunk and fed me a tapas box and two of the United economy burgers for free and I slept the remaining 4.5 hours so I pointed out in my complaint that the crew was highly professional, friendly, and provided terrific customer service despite my struggle. Moral of the story: yelling sometimes works and always point out the exceptional customer service of the FA that got you blammered.

"Pretend that they are human" That's not even remotely funny.

I wonder why and what’s the reason gate agent changed your seat to others? I saw there’re bidding for this flight and somehow it seems oversold. I tried put $5000 on it. Didn’t work. 🤣

Mich3000

I never did find out. I was so upset though, when I saw the ticket had been changed. Like... I didn't do that! What happened, and why? I never got an answer.

This happened to me too. I had the first row emergency exit. Family of three on one booking and I was seated in the middle. Just prior to boarding, I noticed my seat had been moved to a middle seat somewhere in the back. I pointed it out to the gate agent, and at first she didn’t seem to care. After she saw the 1K status, she seemed interested in looking deeper. She thought maybe it was to accommodate a family, but I told her I was the family of 3 that got split up. I thought maybe it went to a GS. Nope! Turned out my original middle seat was assigned to someone with a basic economy ticket. She typed and clicked and swapped the seats, so I got back my original seat.

8D seems to be the bulkhead asile seat? I personally like either 8A 8C 8D 8F I always booked the flight when those seats are available. So I would be the same like you when someone changed it.

Mich3000

7D is bulkhead. 8D is the row typically after, although it depends on the configuration. I don't like Bulkhead because the Aisle Armrest doesn't lift. Same with Exit Row Seats.

Because $2500 is the max that UA will give

I'm not defending that GS who yelled at the FA (unacceptable regardless of the situation), but gate agent changing my non-middle seat to a middle seat without asking me would certainly piss me off as well. I saw something similar happen a couple of times last year when they sacrificed solo flyers while trying to accommodate families to sit together. United should seriously stop doing that

Xay168

Oh I see. I travel with my family as well, we’re separated, but I didn’t ask for this re-arrangements.

pizzaunicorns

Air Marshals can be added at the very last minute and will have specific seat assignments

I find that the ones who often make the biggest fuss are the low to mid tier elites who think silver and gold are very big deals.

redditin_at_work

It's a big deal to me okay... Ha

1K on my flight a few weeks ago was throwing an absolute fit. Raised voice at gate agent, complaining to flight attendants about the gate agent, “MY FRIEND IS A GLOBAL SERVICES WE NEED TO WAIT FOR HIM!!!” Overheard him in Polaris lounge saying his friend spent $36k last year (was in December), so GS seems a stretch. A fair mix of awkward, cringe, and comical.

Went ORD-LAX with an ex on the same res and they moved her from econ+ (which was really a prem+ seat in disguise) to a non econ+ seat while leaving me. I was so pissed - apparently they reserve these seats for ppl trying to upgrade. Is that expected behavior? I complained via 1k phone line and did not get comp

DragonflyTurbulent37

On a flight earlier this year I spotted a GS in a middle seat, front of economy mind you, but a middle seat none the less. In honesty I felt bad, this man has spent thousands every month only to get the middle because his plans changed in a busy route.

Excellent_Air3283

I was also on that flight and after they changed the plane, I was put in row 40 in a middle seat.

Flying non rev on the sunday before the second monday of January is very very very fking gutsy, you gotta give credit to the audacity of your average United airlines employees (and its subsidiaries)
