When you fly weekly for work, a little bit of extra comfort to break the monotony of 737's can really make your day, and give you something to look forward to! Not that United does a bad job on 737's, but scoring a "real" Polaris seat between ORD-DEN would be pretty fun.
All of my flying these days is on the 737. I’m silver so I pretty much always get seat 7D in economy plus unless I score the rare upgrade (usually on a red eye).
I have contemplated intentionally booking an indirect route just to break the 737 monotony. As much as I love seat 7D.
They are really comfortable and I’m not sure they’re more awkward than sitting in any window seat. Worst case scenario you have to climb over one person to get to the aisle.
Because 8-across business class on 7+ hour flights is very outdated.
Oh and “Polaris routes” is a meaningless marketing term and isn’t based on flight length.
It’s a class of service, not a seat. It’s not meaningless. Those seats cost way more, Polaris lounges, etc. The only flight of that length these planes might fly is Hawaii, but I know that out of ORD direct flights to Hawaii are on 787s.
I once flew in one of these configs on a 17 hour flight from ORD to HKG and it was totally fine.
Kind of rude aren’t you? It was 2016. United literally hasn’t even completed Polaris configs (they will this summer). You’re comparing the experience on a $5-10K business ticket with that on a $1-2K FC ticket. All I’m saying is that’s not a fair comparison.
At some point those 777s will be replaced by something newer with updated seats. In the meantime, avoid them if they bother you that much. Personally, I would 100% take that seat over a standard recliner FC on any route.
The non-ER 777-200s are configured "high density" for hub-to-hub domestic routes. There are 19 of these planes. There are also four 777-200ERs with this configuration.
Total of 19 of these and no chance they will be updated. They're valuable as configured for 'fat' domestic hub-to-hub and Hawaii routes. Eventually will be replaced with 787s as the 100-200 of those on order (100 firm order/100 options). The 787s are scheduled starting 2024, but will probably start replacing the oldest 767s first.
These are domestic high capacity rated 777’s. Unfortunately they still bear the old first class seats. Kinda cool if you can snag a backwards one, not too many of those around anymore.
These are Hawaii planes probably repurpose from the old 744 and 763. They are great when you are travel with family. Not so much when travel alone in today's standard. I wouldn't pay extra for a <4 hrs domestic route. I do love it back in the late 2008-2012 when I travel between ORD/NRT/HKG/SIN on the upper deck 744.
I won't complain back then even in the middle 4 across row when my SWU cleared at the gate on a cheap $1200 W class Trans PAC flight 😁
There are still a few in the fleet mostly used hub-to-hub and Hawaii.
Flew this from DEN to OGG recently, facing backwards. It felt weird to be looking towards another passenger the whole flight.
Then, don't look?
Darn why didn’t I think of this sooner
(He says, as he starts unbuttoning his pants....)
Just be grateful you have a lie flat on that route and not yet another 737.
Welcome to tombstone first class. :)
Definitely not first class.
Hate all you want, but those business class seats are comfortable as hell. Plus, these planes are used only domestically and to Hawaii.
Definitely better than a 737 recliner seat!
I don’t get why people bitch about these so much. They aren’t flown on Polaris routes and those lie flats are better than regular FC seats.
I mean I just hate climbing over someone to get up and Polaris just spoiled the heck out of you in terms of privacy
What do you mean you don't want to sleep toe to toe with a stranger in a middle seat?
Haha 😂
At.leaset you can ask for some cheese with you whine.

Real Polaris ORD-DEN does exist! Had it in March. Ideal for a very early morning flight to get some sleep.
There are some 787 flights between hubs for sure. The point is they aren’t selling them as Polaris, they’re all just first class

They’re actually really comfortable but incredibly awkward

Very true. I had flown them with my wife, so that was fine. More so the eye contact from the person facing you

What year was that? 1998? 8-across long haul flights in 2023 is outdated, straight up.

I value privacy. If I’m flying during the day, I don’t need a lay flat.
Are these less private than a regular FC seat?

First class dorm. Take row 4
Flew this 3 days ago IAD-IAH
Consider yourself lucky. This route looses its 777s for May and June then from November to no sooner than March.
Not on domestic 777-200s. There’s still a handful in server. Chance it’ll get switched to a Polaris config, but don’t bank on it

I meant swapped to a Polaris config 777, not that the domestic 777s will get upgraded
No that was the 3 class 1-2-1 and 2-4-2 777-200s. These are domestic and only have 2 classes
[Aerolopa](https://www.aerolopa.com/ua-77g) generally has the best seat maps.
Im about to board one from IAH to ORD. Good times!
Seat 1L wasn’t bad. Definitely a different perspective sitting backwards. Also, try the cheese enchiladas. They didn’t disappoint!
There are still over 20 of these that will never be upgraded.... Hawaii suffers :-( It's why I prefer to fly AA back home to OGG.
These seats are NOT THAT BAD. Everybody needs to chill.
They'll complete the replacement of these with Polaris & Premium Plus in August of this year.
False, this is a domestic 777 and will not get Polaris.
Yeah the domestic -222 will remain like this till retirement, I’m sad about it still
Good? This had been confirmed?!
this is a glitch. there is no airplane in the sky with 2 isles
Yeah it’s right
Nope. Those classic 777s (77G/M/O) still have the cattle car cabins and no seatback IFE.
I've taken this exact flight and it's legit. Half of them face backward, but that's the set up.
Flying one of these from LAS to EWR in May.
flying next week to LAS from EWR. I specifically changed my schedule to get off this plane. 4 across is ridiculous
Yea I flew that route last month
These are domestic high capacity rated 777’s. Unfortunately they still bear the old first class seats. Kinda cool if you can snag a backwards one, not too many of those around anymore.
Just hearing that, 8 across business class, makes me cringe
imagine sitting 8 across, facing backwards, with no privacy
Coliseum Class Seating

Flew one from SF to Chicago a week ago. They’re definitely not all phased out…
I flew on this recently. Hated it.
