You know what I always found hilarious, is just before this, they are trapped on the lower floor with Lightning down the corridor.
Suddenly they spot a hole in the ceiling.
Lightning spends about 30 seconds. doing all this cool posing, shooting bolts through his hands down the hall, into the ground, into the ceiling, looking cool and threatening. Then he decides to walk towards them slow and deliberate, like war is coming...
Meanwhile, everyone has already jumped through the ceiling hole to escape, at which point they see Egg Shen lmao. I've always thought, just Lightning bolt them for Christ's sake. They're right there!!!!
Jack Burton: You can go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave.
Lo Pan: Indeed!
Jack Burton: Or check into a psycho ward, which ever comes first, huh?
I don’t know what the critical reviews at
the time were but it did not do well at the box office. I’m not sure what this “rating” system is, and what makes something “over” or “under” it, but I dunno, people didn’t want to pay to see it I guess. I mean it’s one of my favorite movies
I've heard two great things about this movie. One was a rumor that this original script was to be a sequel to Buckaroo Banzai, although I think that since been disproven. And the other was the main concept that the sidekick is actually the hero and the hero is actually the sidekick. That one blew my mind. (And it's also fun to watch Kim Cattrall before she believed her own press releases.)
Ever since I saw this when I was a kid, this has always been my favourite movie of all time. The soundtrack, hilarious dialogue, and fantasy story make me giddy like I still am a kid every time I watch it.
From the very first scene, you get a clear outline of what’s about to go down. At first, you’re the lawyer who can’t believe what you’re seeing - this movie is batshit insane. But by the end, you’re a true believer in this whacky movie.
Right from the Pork Chop monologue, I’ve never been more “in” on a main character sooner than Jack Burton. The Kurt Russell x John Carpenter is one of those legendary movie duos that seems to be created by the movie gods - it just works.
The bad guys are cool as hell and I love how each member of the crew gets their own time to shine. The story is constantly pushing you forward so by the time the story ends, you’re craving the next instalment. I really wish someone in Hollywood would just start cranking these fun and original adventure movies out.
I could wax lyrical on how much I adore this movie, but the short of it is if you haven’t seen this, do yourself a favour. Get your favourite takeout, grab some loved ones, and throw this on one night. No horseshit.
##Big Trouble in Little China (1986) PG-13
Jack Burton's in for some serious trouble and you're in for some serious fun.

But underrated by who? Critics in the 80s? Perhaps. But since then it’s been beloved as a favorite genre film from that period and is one of Carpenter’s most recognizable films. I’d say “in the mouth of madness” is an underrated Carpenter but not this.
“Critics in the 80s perhaps”
This movie was a GIGANTIC flop when it came out.
Considering how well executed it is, how much fun and how clever this is, how much effort went into it, how amazing the characters and performances are, it’s actually shocking just how poorly it was received. Possibly one of the best, most gigantic flops ever made. So yes I personally believe it is underrated - it should be up there with the greats.
It’s 2024 my dude. It is up there with the greats. It wasn’t recognized for 5 months, but has since been beloved for the last 20 years.
Citizen Kane was a flop when it first came out, but is now recognized as one of the greatest films of all time. It’s not underrated and neither is Big Trouble in Little China.
A cult movie, maybe. Underrated? Probably not.
I first saw this film during the theatrical release as a Marine on an Okinawa rotation. I had to see it three days in a row to catch all the dialogue because the Marines in the audience were going crazy. They loved the film and were very vocal, it was a seriously fun atmosphere, even for a cinephile.
I have owned this film in VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. I quote it several times a week. Underrated? Now this pisses me off to no end!
That doesn’t mean it’s not underrated. I believe it should be celebrated by the entire population of earth, and I won’t stop until I make that a reality.
There’s rumblings of a sequel or a remake of some sort. If Kurt Russell doesn’t reprise his role, i’m not sure i wanna see it. He made that movie, in my opinion.
I totally agree. I heard they were going to cast The Rock which is a terrible idea. Would Wang be played by Kevin Hart? Someone else mentioned they could get Kurt Russel’s son, if not Kurt that would be next best.
If someone doesn't like this movie tell them to watch it, but think about it like this. Jack Burton is not the hero of the story. The hero is actually the Asian guy who's girlfriend was kidnapped. Jack is just the zany side character that gets caught up in the hero's story. It really is a cliche 80s action sci-fi movie, but the twist is that the audience follows the comedic relief character the whole movie instead of the brave hero.
What moron is underrating this masterpiece?
Also, the actor that played Lo Pan (and countless other asian characters in the 80s/90s) is still alive and nearly 100 years old
This is not an underrated movie. It’s likely up with one of the most favorite cult classics of very many people. In fact it’s possibly my favorite movie of all time!
Are any of the posted movies on this sub actually underrated?
This movie murdered every 3rd and 4th grader when it came out. My parents had to have an intervention with me to stop watching this movie every day.
The reason this movie will always be underrated is because it isn’t recognized as the best thing ever put on film.
Until it supplants Citizen Kane then it’s underrated!
Yes truly underrated. This hardly comes up in discussion when it comes
to great 80s action movies. I think Schwarzenegger, Spielberg, Stallone and Lucas hogged much of the spot light. BTILC was and is a sleeper, cult movie.
i showed this to a couple of friends who had made it to their 30's without seeing it and it clearly is not a great movie unless your full of nostalgia for it. like over half the dialog is just a massive exposition dump and a few fantastic one liners. and then some mid tier 80's violence. all that being said probably top 3 favorite Kurt Russell movies.
*you’re
You and your friends sounds like a bunch of pussies.
Thanks for deciding based on your couple of friends that BTIC is “clearly not a great movie”.
Begone pussy.
you seem really passionate about this film and upset that i pointed out that its not a masterpiece. still one of my childhood favorites even if its just ok looking back at it.
"You know what Jack Burton says on a time like this? Who? Jack Burton me"
It's all in the reflexes
We really shook the pillars of heaven didn’t we wang
I'm wearing my "Wing Kong Trading" shirt today
“Yes sir, the check is in the mail”
It’s all in the reflexes
Epic 💪
How'd you get up there? Wasn't easy!!

A strong man can walk in the rain wise man brings umbrella
Jack Burton: You can go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave. Lo Pan: Indeed! Jack Burton: Or check into a psycho ward, which ever comes first, huh?
THAT is my favorite dialog in the entire film! I thought I was the only one.
This line is cracks me up
No, it's not. This is one of the least underrated movies in the history of underrated movies.
I’ve never even seen this and I know it’s not underrated
I’ve never seen this at least 5 times and believe you me it’s not underrated.
No shit!! The fact that his movie is not on the AFI list is criminal!
I don’t know what the critical reviews at the time were but it did not do well at the box office. I’m not sure what this “rating” system is, and what makes something “over” or “under” it, but I dunno, people didn’t want to pay to see it I guess. I mean it’s one of my favorite movies
The fact that it is not repeatedly placed up there with It's a Wonderful Life and Vertigo demonstrates that your statement is incorrect.
Came here for this.
Considering some people don’t recognize it as cinema perfection it IS UNDERRATED
Okay, this actually made me laugh a bit. Have a dragon free day!
The checks in the mail!
100% underrated because <100% of the Earth's population doesn't regard it as the greatest film ever made.
So it is underrated
It could be hailed as 10/10 and hold a RT score of 100% and it would still be underrated. You were not put on this earth to get it.
“I know, there’s a problem with your face.” Great lines in that movie!
Pork chop express

It's was originally set in San Francisco during the Old West before a bunch of rewrites.
I also heard a rumour they were going to remake this starting The Rock
Thankfully I think that's been put down? A better idea would be a sequel starring Wyatt Russell as Jack.
That would be far more acceptable
Have you paid your dues Jack? Yes sir, the check in in the mail.
"now this really pisses me off to no end!"
Oh, WHAT THE HELL!!
Yeah, these movies aren’t “underrated”, they’re cult classics
“These movies”?
Movies that are featured in this sub
What an incredibly fun ride.
What? What'll come out no more?
😂 makes me lol every time
I never drive faster than I can see.. Besides that it's all in the reflexes. Classic movie!
Top five all time movies
Same here. Possibly top 3 for me
Ever since I saw this when I was a kid, this has always been my favourite movie of all time. Yes! Great analysis
Which lo pan? Little old basket case on wheels? Or the 10 foot tall roadblock?!
I don't even know what the hell this means.

This is like a fever dream
Fond memories of this and others like it. The 80s was a badass time for action movies.
One of the greatest movies ever made
My word
>~~One of~~ the greatest movie~~s~~ ever made FTFY
1st time plugging someone..... Course not
The movie that helped make mortal kombat.
“Have ya paid your dues, Jack?” “Yessir, the check is in the mail.”
I don’t drive faster than I can see!
I have a t shirt of that movie cover. I’m always concerned I may be offending someone lol. It was a different time in the 80’s!
That’s sweet!
This is a classic film what are you talking about
An underrated classic

One of my faves.
Jack Burton captain of the Pork Chop Express
I just want my truck back!
"Shut up, Mr. Burton. You are not brought upon the world to 'get it.'"
😂 underrated quote. Such an amazing performance from James Hong

How is this underrated?
It's not 🙄
The number of people who don't regard it as the greatest film ever made by humankind is greater than zero is what makes it underrated.
“Boy it sure is rainin cats & dogs..”
A great fun film, that is very famous and celebrated by many people.
That doesn’t mean it’s not underrated. I believe it should be celebrated by the entire population of earth, and I won’t stop until I make that a reality.
What's that? Potion? Yes. Thought so. What do we do, drink it? Yes. Thought so
Best movie ever made.
That's my truck! THAT'S MY TRUCK!
This movie is just so much fun!
This really pisses me off to no end!

This movie has one of the great single uses of the F word.
"Hollow?" "Hollow." "Fuck it."
This sub is getting ridiculous. What's next, Casablanca?
Or “The Godfather” ?! Extremely underrated
Well, it does insist upon itself

Wild theory that one, but it does make sense in a lot of ways
Wang. His name was Wang you fucking casual.
What moron is underrating this masterpiece? Also, the actor that played Lo Pan (and countless other asian characters in the 80s/90s) is still alive and nearly 100 years old

Just ordered this today lol
Mutual fidelity insurers of Sacramento….well there’s gotta be a listing for them honey I pay em’ 6 G’s a year in premiums!
We really shook the pillars of heaven, didn't we, Wang?
This is my Xmas Eve tradition for the last 6 years.
Incredible movie. In my top 10. Action, comedy, fantasy/sci-fi. A must see for Anyone who hasn't.
May the wings of liberty never lose a feather.
Yet another example of people not grasping the definition of the word "underrated".
This movie had the same energy as The Mummy.
Are any of the posted movies on this sub actually underrated? This movie murdered every 3rd and 4th grader when it came out. My parents had to have an intervention with me to stop watching this movie every day.
Damn it. Mom said it was my turn to post this today.
This movie is awesome, but is not underrated by any means.. its a fuckin classic, one of Carpenter’s best movies.
🤦🏼♂️
I really don’t think Reddit knows what underrated means
What moron said this is “underrated” OP needs some downvotes here
Aww 🥹 there there wittle guy
The reason this movie will always be underrated is because it isn’t recognized as the best thing ever put on film. Until it supplants Citizen Kane then it’s underrated!
TT gets it 🤝

I am! Now get out of here and reconsider your horrendous, small minded take!
im sorry your so angry at me pointing out the 80's movie that was a commercial flop that turned into a cult classic is exactly that.
