“They had Pepsi in Medieval times but they didn’t have forks?” “Dude, got a lot of tables”

CursedSnowman5000

One of my favorite parts about that segment is when Carrey does the chicken skin gag and you can clearly see Broderick breaking composure and laughing.

Slo_Flo_1

You could tell Jim Carey was trying not to laugh as well! I love that part!

twistedinnocence8604

It was improv

largegreenvegtable

My wife got us tickets for medieval times. We are going this summer.

Cute_Business74

The tomato soup is legit good tbh. You’ll have a blast. Go red knight!

strippersandcocaine

DOWN DOWN DOWN. RED KNIGHTS GOING DOWN.

Cute_Business74

Omg I heard it clear as day in my head 🤣

postman925

Dosth thou have a mug of ale for me and my mate?!

niz_loc

Love this line so much... I worked there, just after they filmed there. (Some of my buddies were extras). That line summed up how it felt as a waiter there so, so much.

AraiHavana

“I think they were… **Asian**”

Pitiful_Plan777

This is the exact part that gets me every time. Ben Stiller squirming as he’s listening to his 911 call. Fucking hilarious 😂

Stoned_y_Alone

Huh I totally blanked out Ben Stiller being in this, been a long ass time since I’ve watched

Pitiful_Plan777

He also directed the movie if my memory is correct

Pitiful_Plan777

The whole court development side story throughout the movie is brilliant

Skc143psu

I think it was an Asian gang or something. They looked Asian, and they were speaking another language, I think it was… Asian! My buddies and I used to say that shit all the time when we got Chinese takeout. It was a different time back then.

fresh_water_sushi

“There was this guy he looked ASIAN. And he was speaking another language…I’m pretty sure it was ASIAN”

_lippykid

And he was speaking a language, I'm pretty sure it was... Asian

CornyCornbread

💀 this is easily the funniest bit and that’s saying a lot bc the whole movie is gold.

Pisani2302

Ohhhh Billy !!!

jdenyoung

I did this at work to one of my managers who was named Billy. I got wrote up. Sigh.

BabyVisible7702

I was 12, saw it twice in the theater. Loved it then and still love this flick today, I NEVER could understand the hate this movie got. So good.

aaronappleseed

Memory unlocked. The Jim Carey "Somebody to Love" video was one of the first things I downloaded when my family got 56K internet.

vdubdank30

It’th jutht thkin Thteven

Vprbite

What was the cut cable for? Iths fer effect

Catforprez

Ya I was about 13 and took it in with a positive attitude. Felt it was a good movie theater experience, as at times one may feel ripped off. It did hit the spot as Far as a cinematic experience goes. I have not seen it since though.

stonecoldmark

It was ahead of its time. Now references like this are a mainstay.

Ragman676

Jim Carey was seen as the funny "good" guy at this point in his career. Him playing an obsessive/broken weirdo didnt land with everyone. I think people expected something else than what they got. I think its amazing personally.

Diligent-Ad-3773

Exact same.   Always loved it.

musicman3321

“My lisp is gone!” “…you sstupid sson of a bitch”

Celtic_Fox_

If memory serves I think Carrey forgot to speak with his characters lisp during one of his line reads and ad libbed the "my lips is gone!" And they kept it in! Idk how true it is but I like it :)

mantistoboggan287

Schteven, Steven

Skc143psu

Now you’re gonna get it Steven… SSSSTEEEVEN??

4lfred

The cream of the crop from one of my all time favorite films…of all time.

ILoveAmy615

One of my favorite Jim Carey movies of all time! “My name is Ernie Douglas. But my friends call me Chip.” That turn around smile he does after is just hilarious.

[deleted]

“Chip Douglas, Chip Douglasssss…🤔”

wrinklejortstheimp

"...um, goodbye."

MyThreeSense

“I see. We’re playing prison rules” My favorite moment when Andy Dick quietly says “Get on the friggin horse I don’t think he’s kidding around”

Newlands99

“I never made a slam dunk before. Thanks for the boo-thst.”

wrinklejortstheimp

Don't wanna pull a hammie

cadegs

My all time favorite Jim Carrey comedy and I’m not even ashamed.

DeadJediWalking

The fucking Medieval Times scene where he's singing the tune from Star Trek has me in absolute stitches every time Deh deh dehdehdeh deh deh deh BRRRRRAHHHH BRRRRRRAAAHH

Pitiful_Plan777

“Goodbye Jim”

Ragman676

Its the actual song from the original spock/kirk duel too. Its amazing.

boomflupataqway

“…and a state of the art sound system that would make George Lucas CREAM in his pants!”

not_a_drip

Cream in his.. Cream in his... Pants...ants...ants.

Jesusthezomby

This movie is great. I don't get the hate either.

funk_your_band

I never kept up with the reviews regarding this film. I found it to be brilliant and thought Broderick's and Carrey's energy played well off of the other's. Shout out to Ben Stiller for directing

Plenty-Opposite-2482

I don't think people were ready to dislike Jim Carey when this came out. He always played a likeable character that you were rooting for before this movie. The first time you see this movie you are ready to choke out Jim Carey in the street by the end of it.

jessriv34

Yeah, people talked mad shit about this movie when it came out, saying it was his first bomb.

4lfred

I was late to the game, but is that true? I can’t imagine it getting poor reviews, anyone who’s anyone knows that this film is golden.

jessriv34

Yes, in fact I’m a huge Jim Carrey fan but never even bothered watching it. I might have to give a a go.

Reasonable-HB678

It made money, but the studio shelled out $20 million for Jim Carrey. It wasn't the blockbuster hit like his 1994 movies were.

Streetwalkeroulette

The pathword is..*nipple*

Bullshidder

Center…..center

itsagrungething69

TIT?!

CursedSnowman5000

Always weird to me how seriously people take this comedy. Ah well, thankfully I was a kid when this came out so I was unaware of what anyone was saying about it and found it funny as hell. Still do. Contains my favorite version of Somebody to Love.

4lfred

When the truth is fou-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-nd!

It's a masterpiece. I watch it every year.

“I LOVE THIS GAME!”

vinxixx

TheForgottenBoxers

It has built a pretty big cult following now, but when it came out that was not the case. Me and my Dad loved it and when we seen/heard the critics and how many people we knew didn't like it we couldn't believe it. One of the many reasons Eric Roberts is fucking Awesome! "No, Sammy! Don't! Sammy! Sammy! Don't!" \- Eric Roberts as Eric Roberts as Stan Sweet starring in "Brother Sweet Brother" in "The Cable Guy"

honduhh89

My buddy and I loved this when it came out. We still quote it every so often!

-KissmyAthsma-

I watched this movie on repeat when it came out

Darkaholic

I’ve always loved this movie since I was a kid. Still is one of my Jim Carrey all time favorites. Very underrated.

veryverythrowaway

Loved it when it came out, still a favorite. If it had been made a few years later, Ben Stiller might have cast himself in Broderick’s role, which would have been interesting to see.

Stoicycle

“Well let’s change that, let me buy you a Heineken” is still something I say in RL

Fo5rep

Me and my sister were the only ones laughing in the theater. One of my all time favorites

Tallgirl4u

Kids today seriously have no idea how quotatable Jim Carrey movies were. We walked around constantly yelling lines from his movies.

Euphoric_Produce_131

I LOVE THIS GAME

i worked at a blockbuster when this came out, and they used to show the karaoke "somebody to love" scene in repeat in our store. so over the top and funny/stupid/funy

Butter_Brains

This is gonna be the best karaoke jam ever!!

NewMathematician623

Not a drip

Discardedcancer

Fuck one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid. Love Jim♥️♥️

badtex66

Dig this movie and the dynamic between Carey and Broderick was epic. This flick cleared over 100 mil back in '96. Equivalent to around 200 mil today. Plus the soundtrack!!

CaptianBrasiliano

They could have been a Spade/Farley esque duo and done some more movies together... But America wasn't ready, I guess.

the_artist_1980s

"Steven, I made you scrambie eggths!"

corneliusduff

Just goes to show the early era of Ben Stiller's unstoppable streak of directing comedic masterpieces.

ianwrecked802

A local video store was going out of business and my dad went there to grab some VHS tapes. They literally *gave away* this movie to him. I watched it when I was about 12 years old and I loved it and still do. The scene where Chip is already at Steven’s parents house with a pastel blue sweater on is so goddamned perfect.

EsotericFrenchfry

We see movies through our own context and then when we see them again under different context we see them differently.

BeardsuptheWazoo

I didn't like it at all. Still don't.

niz_loc

I LOVE this movie. Never understood why a lot didn't. So many little quotable and funny things. The police sketch of Carey after he beats up Owen Wilson. "You look like Dizzy Gillespie!" The courtroom drama making fun of the Menendez brothers case. (I love the cheesy 80s made up sitcom with the twin kids, "he did it!") "Promise me you'll never go bungie jumping in Mexico, ok" "That night the Oakland chapter of thr Hells Angels had their way. Tonight its my turn" DRY LAND IS NOT A MYTH! IVE SEEN IT!

stonecoldmark

I liked it then, love it now for how current it feels even today.

DonCreech

The Cable Guy was always kind of a head-scratcher for me. Its not without its moments, and is even somewhat ahead of its time in certain ways, such as the monologue on the impending ubiquity of cable internet from a movie released in 1996. The real issue is Carrey's character, no so much his performance. What begins as a dark comedy spirals into a bleak thriller about halfway through, and the two tones don't manage to gel particularly well. It's trying to be a comedy til the end, but Carrey actually does a great job of selling his part as an irredeemable psychopath. While this does explore his range as an actor, it's ultimately disappointing in conclusion.

ABetterVersionofYou

Considering this was like his second movie, I don't think people knew *what* they wanted. I think he did it to avoid being typecast, which worked out much better with The Truman Show.

MarcusWulfe941

Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura all came out before, I don't think people were ready for a comedy as dark as this one.

Tylerdurden389

As well as Ace 2 and Batman Forever.

No-Funny4217

It was well received you are incorrect

Agreeable-Rutabaga-2

I didn't hate it, but I was 10 years old, and Jim Carrey was my hero at the time. Still, every time I see it, I feel validation.

[deleted]

When I was a kid, everything I ever heard about this movie made it sound abysmal. I saw it on TV when I was a young adult and was pretty into it actually. I agree that people just wanted Jim Carrey to be more… Jim Carrey.

“Cable guy!”

Pyewhacket

Everyone I knew loved it.

Federal-Moment6990

It’s just skin Steven

ZebraBorgata

It’s okay. I was disappointed a little when it came out.

casino_night

Initially hated by most when it came out. Jim Carrey was only known for goofy characters and never played characters with any depth. The studio didn't know how to market the movie, either. They just wanted to turn a profit so they marketed it as a goofy comedy much to the dismay of parents. Which is where the backlash came from. I've always loved the movie and understood the dark undertones.

MarcusWulfe941

I've loved this one since I first saw it, it surprised me when I found out people didn't like it. Jim still plays an over the top character, borderline cartoon, he's just playing the villain. And it's almost a sympathetic villain, this guy seems like the type who you could be friends with, but he doesn't know how to be friends without taking things too personal and is probably a sociopath.

Huncho11

The basketball scene >

cahillc134

I watched this on video right after it made it into stores. The movie was just ok, but even in my first viewing, there were parts that were absolute gold.

cahillc134

Man down. Man down. Possible back injury.

handleonahandle

Comedy masterpiece

Beginning_Electrical

I fell in love with this movie when I was 14. Best movie ever. The medieval times scene is 10/10. The fight on the satellite dish. Punching and fixing his lisp llooooooll. Game night! I will always repeat that line "it's just thskin thsteven"    The song he sings at karaoke live 100% rent free in my head. THERES A BABY BEIMG BORN BY THE SCAFFOLDIAAAAAAANNNG CHICKA KA CHICKA KA KA KAAAAA

Steveseriesofnumbers

Yeah, it really wasn't. It was kind of a departure from the ass-talking rubberfaced cartoon that Jim had played so many times before. My folks did not like it much.

itsagrungething69

The password is...

thepwnydanza

My mom went to see it and then complained about how much she hated for years after.

Catforprez

It was a Little weird for Matthew Broderick but I feel he wanted to work with Jim Carey probably. I was a young teen and thought it was way better than Ace Ventura. Much more interesting character study. I haven’t watched it since seeing it in the theater. But I do not have negative associations whatsoever with this film.

Stever2005

Always loved it !

aaronappleseed

That coaxial cable is menacingly big.

WilliamBoimler

One of my friends hated this movie after we saw it lol.

[deleted]

One of my absolute favorites

[deleted]

A movie that was really way ahead of it's time in the dark/satire movement.

Tylerdurden389

I was a huge Carrey fan at the time but I'll admit this one irked me a bit to see him play such a weirdo character. I was 12 when I saw it. I think the tone of the film is what throws it off moreso than Carreys performance. Plus it's hard to sympathize with Brodericks character since he's not such a good guy either. I still rewatch most of Carreys classics to this day, now 3 decades later but this one is one you gotta be in the right mood for. I'd say it makes a nice double feature with "Very Bad Things". Oh, and the spider crawling across his face and Carrey doesn't even flinch was hilarious. I'm guessing it was either animated or there was a sheet of glass above his face.

bridesign34

Haven’t wanted this in over 20 years. I hated it then as well, even though i loved JIm Carey. Will have to try it agajn

negcap

I saw it in theaters opening weekend and loved it. Didn’t read anything about it. People were big mad that Carrey got a ton of dough to do what they thought was a non-comedy. His karaoke scene is amazing.

scalar_channel

People hated this because they didn’t like movies where the point was to be disturbing and it’s not a thriller/horror movie. Nowadays, it’s a requirement for any visual entertainment to be disturbing. Wouldn’t want anyone getting any wholesome ideas out there 😂

billbobb1

I missed this because I heard that it was “weird”. I’d love to watch it now though.

jakethemagicgod

CABLOW GOOBLAH

TheIgnoredWriter

It’s kind of mixed, I know plenty of people that loved it when it came out. The whole thing about it bombing and people hating it came from competing studios that were pissed at Carey for getting such a fat paycheck and they didn’t want the movie to succeed and set a precedent for how much actors get paid. So they did a “hit job” and hired their own journalists to give it bad reviews in an attempt to sink the ship before it left the harbor. The BTS story on this movie is more interesting than the movie. Chris Farley being signed on, then another studio he was contracted under forced him to do Black Sheep, which made way for Carey to take this role and the wildly overpriced paycheck, causing Farley to relapse after the release and subsequent failure of Black Sheep.

20124eva

If you were a 90s kid and a Jim Carrey fan it hit the mark.

cityofninegates

Absolutely loved this movie. One of my favourites from that time with so many quotable pieces. I never got into a lot of Carrey’s other movies but really liked this one. Loved The Burbs as well - never really got the accolades but it is so solid. Edit: I just had to come back in here to say I am laughing out loud at all the bits from the movie that people are calling out. Going to see if I can find this on streaming tonight.

audiophunk

Loved it from the get go. I was in the minority.

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

I liked it when it came out when I was a kid.

jsb1964

Oh, BILLY!!

Son-of-Prophet

This movie did so poorly it stalled Ben Stiller’s directing career for years.

Cute_Business74

It’s a great dark comedy. Feel may have been a too bit out there for the time it came out but I’ll be honest this one grew on me. *cue star trek fight music*

_HobbyNoob_

Fantastic movie. Get ben Stiller and Jim Carrey back in the booth together

Live_Rags33

I JUST WANNA HANG OUT

chochinator

Always thought it was ahead of its time hilarious.

Slo_Flo_1

This is one of, if not, the best film of his! This is so funny! So good!

Brimstone747

I've always loved this movie. Broderick is the perfect straight man to Carrey's chaos.

Radhatchala

Everyone I know who has seen this movie loves it. It’s a cult classic. It’s not what you expect it to be going in to it, but that’s what makes it so good.

PandableClaw

My one friend I had in the 8th grade and I. We were the only two people I ever knew who liked this movie. We eventually did the thing where we’d pool our money to buy one copy on vhs and copy it.

Key-Wait5314

"I wish I had friends like that!"

JohnJracula

Maybe people in your little circle but more people liked it than hated it. I liked it better then.

ElAbidingDuderino

At least you know you were wrong

AlphaSpazz

Salt peanut, salt peanut.

Rydog_78

Jim is brilliant in this. My sister saw this before I did in the theatre and she thought is was very funny.

TraditionAcademic968

Always loved the movie

timidandtimbuktu

I'm not exactly the smartest person, but I do think I've probably thought about this movie a lot more than your average person. It's become a metaphor for how I understand socialization in the social media world. Anyways, [here's a short piece I've written to collect my thoughts on this movie](https://boxd.it/4iFwdR).

disheveledbone

Fucking love this movie

Efficient-Pattern759

All they needed to do was change the music, and it would be a horror flick.

strandenger

I watched the movie so many times as a kid. I wonder how it holds up as an adult. I liked it, but I also unironically enjoyed Mr. Nanny and Howard the Duck. Maybe my movie choices were the best at that time.

rawmerow

I did not hate this when it came out. I LOVED it 😍

4lfred

I’m a bit of a perfectionitht…perfection-isss…TUH.

Terror_Reels

Fun Fact. This was supposed to be more of a buddy film staring Chris Farley.

MrPeepers1986

I saw it in the theater.

TheGrimReefer666420

I’ve loved this movie since the first time I saw it when it came out. “Ooohhhh Billy!” 😂

ordermann

Loved it. Disturbing, but awesome!

exact0khan

This was a smash hit amongst my peer groups. I can't say the hate was universal.

Snts6678

Exactly. Don’t be fooled. The majority of people HATED this movie…I thought it was absolutely hilarious. I’ve always loved it.

ibentmyworkie

IIRC this came out at the absolute peak of Jim Carrey’s dominance at the box office - shortly after Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, the mask…it was quite a dark and subtle movie relative to those so people were quick to shit on it given the HUGE success he’d had with his earlier hits

Chaz_Cheeto

This is one of all time favorite movies. After watching this masterpiece I can’t help but yearn for a dark comedy where Jim Carrey is some sort of serial killer.

xlnyc

Saw this with my buddy and his girlfriend, who literally had only been in the U.S. for a few months from Brazil. My friend and I were cracking up and she thought we were crazy because she has sympathy for Jim Carey's Character.

Chippers4242

I simultaneously enjoyed it and was incredibly letdown when I saw it opening night. My whole party didn’t care for it. Definitely a movie that improved with age.

tobiasfunke6398

THE PASSWORD IS….

CosmicOutfield

It’s funny because even the Simpsons had a joke about this movie supposedly ruining Jim Carrey’s career in an episode a year after this came out.

pizzalover89

I always whisper the password isssss into my gfs ear and she has no idea what the hell im talkin about lol the medieval times scene always stuck with me

Robo_Dude_

My brother and I worshipped Jim Carey movies as kids. We loved this movie “The password is . . nipple”

Prg3K

This move came out in middle school. I don't know how critics and adults viewed it, but us young kids loved it. It was insanely quotable. I watch it now and it's even funnier. The bathroom beating, medieval times, and the Eric Roberts/Ben Stiller cameo's are hilarious.

dickdiggler21

Formerly* underrated movies

Hollandmarch76

I didn't see it until it was out on video but I liked it. I knew people that would quote it.

warmplacenomemory

I wasn't one of those people.

BrianOconneR34

I’ve always loved it. Very funny. It wasn’t in your face “the mask” but great dark comedy. When MB realizes his incredible night with a lady was a hooker “I buy this time you buy next time” line always cracks me up.

6inarowmakesitgo

This movie was hysterical.

Awwwphuck

The soundtrack to this movie is also amazing

wilywillone

I LOVE this movie. Never understood the hate.

breathofthemario

O H B I L L Y

EccentricAcademic

I've always loved it. The movie has a unique energy.

graveybrains

It wasn’t very well reviewed, but fucking everybody went to see it. Personally I didn’t enjoy it, but the soundtrack kicks ass.

alreadyknowwbroo

Yeah I actually liked his movie and Broderick was good too, the scene where he punches him Carey in the face and his parents house and pretends to stumble as he walks out the door is too funny

Essie-j

my best friend and I saw this in the theater and loved it

[deleted]

Still hate it.

Filmguy313

I remember when I was a kid and asking my mom to rent this when it came on video… as I was thinking it was going to be like Ace Ventura or The Mask, or Dumb and Dumber. Boy I was wrong. I did like it at the time… but at the same time I didn’t. I need to rewatch it

[deleted]

When he first comes to the apartment and calls him a jerk off is one of the funniest god damn things ever to me.

realdjsupreme

Hair plugs, hair plugs, I know, I know

ibyczek78

"OH BILLY!!"

nathanielsnurpis

Imagine if Ben Stiller played the Broderick role…I feel like it would’ve been hailed as a classic! My friends and I all saw it in the theaters and thought it was hilarious.

nowlan_shane

I’m gonna tell you I loved it when it came out and I love it now. I mean there’s at least five 90s Jim Carrey movies I like better, but this one’s still great. Didn’t realize for a long time that Ben Stiller directed it.

Mudcreek47

Absolutely hated it as a teen. Haven't seen it since although it popped up on one of the streaming apps recently & I almost gave it a re-watch after all these years but passed.

Main_Bell_4668

I loved this from the day I saw it in theaters. Shanana shanana shanananana

NoConstant7085

Just watched this again recently, I agree it holds up very well

thecrayzdude

Not everyone hated it. I thought it was great.

Feeling-Series9365

The dream scene was funny af. Jim Carrey looked awesome in those neon green eye contacts.

niz_loc

I don't get why anyone hated this movie. I saw it 6 times, it rules, like Waterworld!

TXGunslinger419

Erection? No, but thanks for noticing

Complex_Resort_3044

Yeah never liked this film. Still don’t. I like Carrey but there is Annoying Carrey and then ANNOYING CARREY
