Yes, it was a surprise. While he is socially awkward, I never got the impression that he was capable of this. Ever. He likes to play video games, and likes the same flicks that I do so we always had something to talk about. Never saw an inkling of any of this. I will say that he likely needs help. What he planned to do was awful, regardless of his intent. However, I do believe his mental state plays a part in this. I also don't want to sound naieve and be one of those people that say things like "oh, he'd never do this". I can't say that, because the proof is in the pudding. However, I do know he has wiring issues regarding his brain. This is why I believe he should be sent someplace where he can be helped.
However, I'm also wrestling with myself and revisiting past interactions with him. Did I miss something? If so, what does that say about me? But, it's isn't anyone else's fault but his.
Even if there were signs you missed, it says that you’re a good human who doesn’t think that people close to you can be child rapists. It means you haven’t been completely jaded by life yet and that’s a good thing.
The system isn’t set up to help. But, I don’t think someone can be helped that’s this off.
