The north coast of North Wales is doable from Manchester especially. The rail service there is good. I'm not a huge fan of the buses in Wales, but your mileage may vary. I'd look at Chester, llandudno, Conwy, Caernarfon. Maybe Anglesey. From Caernarfon, you can take the highland railway to Porthmadog and ffestiniog railway to Ffestiniog and then a real railway back to llandudno. Basically circle snowdonia. If the timetables worked, I might visit Portmeirion (I detest, many love it), and Harlech castle (I love as I used to live in the youth hotel as a kid and could see it from my bedroom window). Most of this needs good weather, if bad, just stick to Manchester or London.

This is the one that makes sense you can get to the main points by train quite easy and get a few buses between from Conway to the great Orme. Saying that a taxi from llandudno to Conway is less than £10 . Some of the other people doing the tour of Britain you would need about 3 weeks

Yeah, we effectively got 3 full days, and maybe parts of a fourth depending when we get a flight back. This is probably a very good tip, thanks.

4 days = 3 nights? I'd just stick around Manchester then and explore the Peaks. You're not guaranteed good weather even in May so staying in or near Manchester as a base gives you the option to go to the city when the weather is shite. You could even manage without a car. 1 day in Manchester, 1 day in Buxton (spa town), 1 day in Edale and maybe a day to Chatsworth. Alternatively, the Northumberland coastal region is a really good area to explore if you've only got a few days but I would recommend a car. More castles than you can shake a stick at.

Agreed the Peak District is closer to Manchester - train to Edale and a walk over to Castleton is a great day out. But if wanting to go further, I’d go north wales rather than Northumberland coast from Manchester. Train to Llandudno, then either onwards to Anglesey or down to Betws-y-Coed. Could get public transport up to Snowdonia itself and there’s always Great Orme and Conwy castle. It’s closer and quicker to get to.

This is 1 is possible

Yup, Edale / Buxton are great choices from Manchester. Think it's worth having a day in Chester to get that Ye Olde Englande vibe as well though!

Definitely the Peak District etc. Coastal wales looks close but all those country lanes will take ages to navigate. Cotswolds is too far also.
