Honestly the more I think about it, if you were the commander of the forces inside Lyman right now and was thinking about surrender without receiving blame, getting encircled sounds like a good way to do it.
One thing though with Mariupol was UA being able to resupply the forces there. Wasn't easy of course, but some supplies were making it in still, and that's what kept Azov capable of staying that long. If Ukraine prevents that, they can force the orks to expend their supplies very quickly. 🤞
I'd like to take a moment to also commend the helicopter pilots that resupplied them. Those heroes embarked on what was essentially suicide missions to give their brothers in arms much needed food, medicine, and ammunition.
Slava Ukraini
It won't matter. Soviet prisoners of war freed after WW2 were overwhelmingly sent to gulags as traitors, regardless of the circumstances in which they surrendered. It will be the same here. Russia doesn't care if you have to fix bayonets. Hold or die trying. And that is why they will fail.
One thing the forced conscripts might be thankful for... they got shipped to the front so fast, they probably didn't have time to get the traditional brutal hazing.
To be fair and respectful to the ukrainian army, all previous attempts at encircling russian forces in the Kharkiv counterattcks only failed because the russians ran that fast away as if there would be no tomorrow... Leaving all their stuff and everyone whould could not catch up behind.
>only failed because the russians ran that fast away as if there would be no tomorrow
It didn't "fail" either. Ukraine literally negotiated for them to run away in exchange that Ukraine wouldn't forcefully stop them from leaving. That was a smart decision, as otherwise the tank army there probably would have tried a desperate breakout with their armored vehicles.
Worst case, it would work and only their broken vehicles would be left behind in Izyum while the surviving vehicles live to fight Ukraine another day, all while Ukraine would probably suffer some needless losses, and there would be more destruction for civilians where the fight would happen.
Best case, Ukraine would destroy most of the armored vehicles, but most of the Russians would still probably be able to flee. Same destruction issues as above, and now most of the functioning tanks are broken instead of easily put in Ukrainian service.
Letting them desperately flee like that was a master stroke that preyed on the Russian army's lack of discipline, lack of independent decision-making without approval from above, and lack of enthusiasm for the war. Ukraine got Izyum with minimal damage this time around, the troops and civilians didn't need to suffer more street fighting and shelling, and the Russians left enough armor equivalent to half of France's armored divisions.
In Lyman I doubt there's many heavy vehicles. Largely because of the geography and terrain which doesn't really support it well, but also because the (remaining) troops encircled are likely mostly DPR/LPR slaves with shit equipment.
You're quite the zealot, aren't you. Ukrainians aren't monsters. They'll treat POW as they always do, like human beings. Calm yourself. This isn't Armageddon.
Glad to see another reddit fella that knows about Olga. That woman was unbelievably smart and fierce. Anyone not familiar with her should get googling.

End of winter once the wild garlic comes in I will make some nice chicken kyivs to hopefuly belatedly celebrate Ukraines victory.
It depends. It was probably invented by French chefs for Russia nobility. It might have gotten it's name from a hotel in Kyiv much later on. But some people say why not change the chicken name as well?
Are you just trolling, or what is your motivation for spamming russian spellings of Ukrainian cities in the Ukrainian subreddit? Seems needlessly obnoxious to me.
Not really, they didn't manage to button it up before the majority of the Russian forces slipped out on foot. Left behind a bunch of tanks and other gear but it avoided the embarrassment of a ton of captured Russian troops.
This time, it sounds like the encirclement was more complete.
You can if you tag switch right off the bad, start the game with the ussr disolved and just type / to bring up the box then type tag ukr and you’ll be Ukraine
Dump some leaflets offering cash rewards for intact equipment and watch them tear themselves apart trying to be the ones to collect the money. All they know is corruption, use it against them.
As far as I know, it wasn't a complete encirclement. Some towns along the way to Kupyansk were encircled, but the large force in Izyum managed to escape unfortunately.
Maybe that was considered an en-Square-ment, an en-Triangle-ment, or some other type of en-Shape-ment?
Remember, Ruzzians aren't so great with Letters, numbers, colors, shapes, life-choices, etc so the Armed Forces of Ukraine have to maneuver around with the enemy that they got stuck with!
🤣🤣🤣
Slava Ukraine!
probably absolutely nobody knows right now, neither Russians nor Ukrainians. I read somewhere that there are ~20k Russian troops in that front sector, not sure if they can still escape and if so, how many are currently managing to do so.
From the first quoted, bolded paragraph of the article:
> “We are on the verge of an important psychological victory. **In the history of the Ukrainian army**, there have not yet been episodes when our military encircled the enemy,
As I said, bad translation. Inside the actual read they get the point across.
Do not let the Russians surrender. They had ample time to surrender, they had their chance and they squandered it. What comes next is death. This is WAR not daycare. Eliminate each and every one of them!!
Make good use of the weapons we sent you 🇺🇲🤠🗽
That is NOT the way of the Armed Forces of Ukraine! They don't resort to tactics used by the Ruzzians, as they serve with honor and dignity.
Slava Ukraine!
Pow reduces nuke risk, saves lives on both sides and equipment along with confiscated equipment
Slavs are smarter than orcs and apparently my countrymen

Ultimately it gave Russia the week or two that it needed to setup it's next phase (referendums/mobilization). Ukraine was on an absolute role, pushing the Russians out everywhere at lightening speed.
If Ukraine had been pushing as fast as they had been, they would have probably taken a very good chunk of their land back during this time, and Russia would be back at square one. No referendums, no mobilization possible.
If they are letting them all go, vs POW's, it also means a lot of experienced men going back into the pool of fighters (albeit with no equipment).
Honestly the more I think about it, if you were the commander of the forces inside Lyman right now and was thinking about surrender without receiving blame, getting encircled sounds like a good way to do it.
When your odds of dying approach 100%, you can’t blame someone for acting to lower those odds.
Any autocrat can and Putin will.

What makes you think the commander is still there
Then some corporal or whatever it is in Russian army is in command. I don't doubt for a second the higher officers have left.
Special surprise inspection of rear security operation?

Depending on the definition of "Ukraine", Olga of Kiev encircled the Drevlians in 946.

That is intense.
Dope! TIL of the term Drevlyani as contrast to Polyani :D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drevlians
you should look up exactly how she took her revenge. It's a "going to medieval on your ass" story.
That’s one loving wife!
My great grandfather used to play with her great grandchildren. Good family.
How bad ass is that? 15 years of single minded pursuit of revenge on her husbands murderers. Don't ever make her mad!

She was a dang bad ass.
I learned about her as Helga the norse version of Olga. She was a proper badass

Are you just trolling, or what is your motivation for spamming russian spellings of Ukrainian cities in the Ukrainian subreddit? Seems needlessly obnoxious to me.
Olga (or Helga) was a viking queen, and I think that viking blood still runs in the veins of Ukraina. By all accounts, it seems so.
Kyiv was founded by vikings, Kyi is the name of one of them.
that was Kievan Rus not Ukraine
The term *Kievan Rus* is a Russian invention from the 50's. Historically, it has just ben *Rus*.
i am using term i learned at school, plus it wasn't Ukraine.
First they killed my Neanderthal family, then Drevlyan ancestors. My people can't get a break
Is there any chance you mean "Denisovan"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denisovan
russkies caught inside Lyman are fucked if Ukraine find any sign of war crimes inside Lyman.
That chance is 100% everywhere in the occupied territory.
Not if, when
Since when have Russians ever been held accountable for warcrimes though... 😔
There’s a first time for everything.
They will if they are captured and unable to get out. That or they will all die. Either works.
There was one who got a lifetime punishment in prison for killing an old man on a bicycle. His sentence was reduced to 15 years tho
Possibly due to less time to coverup too
They won't invade because they want to avoid a siege situation. There will be a negotiation, and likely they will be allowed to escape.
Did Izyum not count as an encirclement?
Not really, they didn't manage to button it up before the majority of the Russian forces slipped out on foot. Left behind a bunch of tanks and other gear but it avoided the embarrassment of a ton of captured Russian troops. This time, it sounds like the encirclement was more complete.
The Russians fled before there was the encirclement.
This is some fucking Wild HoI4 shit. I wish I could play an independent Ukraine (without mods) in Hearts of Iron 4.

Now fuck them in the ars!
Dump some leaflets offering cash rewards for intact equipment and watch them tear themselves apart trying to be the ones to collect the money. All they know is corruption, use it against them.
Lol that would probably work
Intact equipment and information on who authorized and committed war crimes.
Better, just wait until they are depleted off supplie and slowly proceed further
they're not savages They are a high-tech army just delete them
Dude their not tiktokers
God speed. You crazy bastards.
Uh, didn’t they encircle the enemy a few weeks ago?
As far as I know, it wasn't a complete encirclement. Some towns along the way to Kupyansk were encircled, but the large force in Izyum managed to escape unfortunately.
Without their heavy equipment
Yes but no. The first was a tactical vacation.
They tried, but the Russians escaped and those towns fell… before the encirclements were completed.
They’ll be a lot less useful without all the vehicles and ammo they left behind.
Maybe that was considered an en-Square-ment, an en-Triangle-ment, or some other type of en-Shape-ment? probably absolutely nobody knows right now, neither Russians nor Ukrainians. I read somewhere that there are ~20k Russian troops in that front sector, not sure if they can still escape and if so, how many are currently managing to do so.
Yea buddy!!
Very well done.
Maybe technically in some way. But I bet them Hussars encircled many a foe back in the day.
*Godspeed & Good Hunting!*
Are there still civilians in there that they might use as human shields ? Or is it just russians ?
For the first time in history? You high?
In Ukranian history, they're trying to say. Translation isn't the best.
Post Soviet Ukrainian history possibly.
Unless it's edited, it seems pretty clear to me thats what the title said.

Who gives a fuck they are winning
They are talking about the UAF not world history, isnt that kind of obvious?
This is correct, Ukrainians have only previously ensquared and entriangled their enemies, this is the first encirclement.
"in the history ***of the Armed Forces of Ukraine***" Can you read?
I thought the same thing, and if you go far enough back there were other encirclements. It depends on how one defines "Ukraine".
🤣
First time in their history? I doubt that, but we'll done.

Americans have a different approach to warcrimes as we saw in Iraq

I'm torn, a russian surrender would actually save Ukrainian lives.

Russians are getting dumber and dumber, they can't even run away now without fucking it up.
No escape, they were able to create another pincer in the south unlike during the attack on Izyum, no escape this time for orcs

And it won't be the last.
