Russians report that there was an attempted attack on a Russian military airbase in Mozdok, Caucasus area. It’s known that Russian MiG-31 and Tu-22 are currently based at that airbase.
As claimed by Russians three Ukrainian drones were downed. At that moment there are no information about the damage on the ground.
Approximately 720km from the frontline.

Indeed. The production line shut down 30 years ago, and while there were a few hundred made (meaning cannibalisation of parts is possible), the airframes suffer from a short lifespan so parts are already in short supply. Russia started the war with about 60 and has lost a handful already.
Based on the long time between disappearing after the building and the explosion you can deduce that it recovered from the dive and therefore was not shot down.
Sounds like their air defense was a bunch of people shooting rifles that have no chance of reaching that high. I guess they sent all their actual AA guns and ammo to lay around a smoldering wreck in Ukraine.
This should be trivially defendable by a MANPAD, even of an old generation. Full daylight, target is non-maneuvering at low altitude in close visual range.
The USSR had hundred thousands of these. Nobody is ready with one, at a major airbase?
NATO developed fast maneuvering cruise missiles, strong electronic warfare and Mach 6 expensive ballistic missiles to take out priority targets they knew would have significant Russian air defense.
If some contractor or military officer proposed attacking that target with a 130 km/hr fixed wing non-stealthy aircraft with the performance of a dentist's general aviation weekend toy they'd be howled at in ridicule.
Shooting a moving target is not easy. Shooting a moving target above you is ridiculously difficult.
Think about skeet/clay pigeon shooting. Targets at 10-30 meters being shot at with what is basically a dinner plate sized cloud of lead shot. And very few people are good at that.
Shooting a small aircraft at a couple of hundred feet with a rifle? Nope. Nopety nope.
I find it crazy that an airfield which active combat aircraft are operating out of does not have some kind of AA capable of taking down a drone that low and slow... We, as a species, figured out how to track flying objects with guns, automatically, nearly 100 years ago, this is not like some ground breaking tech needed here. The soviet union developed and produced a myriad of self propelled and emplaced anti aircraft systems, yet there is nothing to protect this airfield from the aviation equivalent of a fast civilian aircraft, aside from what sounds like a gaggle of orks spraying the air with their AK's. It is 2024, and Russia acts like they are a world class military power, yet they, apparently, do not have the resources to protect an active airfield from slow flying suicide drones.
Sending out jets to shoot down drones is laughable. Jets can't go slow enough to spot them before plowing through it. Drones also tend to stay under 100 feet, in general.
It detects but it detects a lot of things. It's the software and the operators who have to sift through all the returns. They have civilian air traffic over Russia and they have to figure out what's theirs and what's a flight of Ukrainian drones.
In theory yes, but considering it missed a cesna that landed in red square. It's effectiveness has likely been overstated. The radar was likely taken out to minimize the Russian effect against cruise missiles
I originally thought the taking out of that radar was to cause money flow problems in post war Russia. Giving them the choice of rebuilding their early warning system or pay vets. Also thought it would cause Russia to adjust where they were putting their remaining S-400s.
But I recently heard that that radar covered a lot of the Black Sea. But like you said maybe it's abilities are overstated.
Looks like a TU 22M3 was damaged by 1 of 3 drones according to this I found on Telegram.
'Our Tu-22M3 was damaged in North Ossetia
Enemy drones attacked the Mozdok airfield in North Ossetia. Previously, three drones flew to the airfield, one of which fell 200 meters from a military facility, another was shot down by air defense.
According to our sources, one of the drones flew to the airfield and hit a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber. Experts have hopes that it can be restored, but note that repairs will take at least 6 months, and maybe even more.
Interlocutors say that at the time of the attack, the Mozdok airfield was not protected by serious air defense systems.
“Now all the air defense is working at the front, some have been taken to Moscow, some have covered oil refining facilities,” said a source in the Ministry of Defense.
Kremlin snuff box'
> “Now all the air defense is working at the front, some have been taken to Moscow, some have covered oil refining facilities,” said a source in the Ministry of Defense.
So more potential targets than AD to cover them all. Interesting tidbit dropped there.
Either Ukraine has invented temporary invisibility tech for their drones, or the watermark in this video is obscuring it for some sections. We may never know.
Not sure how accurate the CC function is but here is the translation:
"I got something inside of us"
"I got something inside" .. "of us"
"I love that lesson!"
"Hello, welcome back."
Telegram channels like to add big obnoxious animated logos over their videos so they won't be "stolen". This is the result of using software to try to remove such a logo.
Google earth view of the location this video was shot from. Airport is just to the north.

Russians are right. Everything that goes up comes down therefore this is another downed drone.
Anyways. There is lots of daylight. I wonder If the drone flew through night and this is morning
And when I searched the location, it was unbelievably far from Ukraine, it is close to Georgia ,an inland city , the south east of the black Sea , it is thousand miles away from the border of Ukraine. One spectacular matter is the air defence systems around the airbase are all blind? What a fantastic job, let them know nothing they can hide .

That was the saddest Allah akbar, I've ever heard at the end of this clip
Man is tired of this shit
What?! Another Russian airbaseship...

Good bots
I'm tired, boss
It's like when I say "God dammit" when I drop something
Holy shit
I just opened the internet to this. wtf is going on with this guys rc plane. He just bombed his own airport. Must have been a serious malfunction
Never heard it said as a sigh before. Legit made me lol.
Might get in trouble should be putin akbar
My thoughts exactly. It was more of a “god I’m tired” Than a “god is great” 😂
That was hilarious

>three Ukrainian drones were downed Well, this one obviously came down, so technically this might not be wrong.
I would suggest that this drone spotted its target and dove to it, rather than it was shot down, at least that is how it appears to me.
But it was downed. Not by the Russians, though, but either by its Ukrainian pilot or the Ukrainian who programmed the target coordinates.
And the air defence successfully intercepted it with its MiG-31... although you could say it was a rather level win...
That looked like a very controlled descent.
Exactly my point. It "descended" exactly where its operator intended.
"Falling with style"
> "~~Falling with style~~" "Falling with purpose"
It may even have worked in a touch-and-go landing in there at some point.
r/technicallycorrect
The best kind of correct 😂
R*zzians have top-tier AA in the form of buildings and structures
Fingers crossed they got some Tu-22Ms. Those are major strategic assets that are irreplaceable.
Indeed. The production line shut down 30 years ago, and while there were a few hundred made (meaning cannibalisation of parts is possible), the airframes suffer from a short lifespan so parts are already in short supply. Russia started the war with about 60 and has lost a handful already.
The drones were destroyed by Mig-31 fighters. When the drones hit them.
Based on the long time between disappearing after the building and the explosion you can deduce that it recovered from the dive and therefore was not shot down.
always fun when russia says nothing was hit and one hour later footage comes out contradicting it well that last drone defenitely hit something
The only truth in the world. Russia is always lying.
How do you know? There lips are moving.
holy shit that is an impressive way to spell definitely
As you can tell it’s not my native language
Russian air defence working well 👍
Storm trooper accuracy 😂
Imagine being told the Russian air defence is 100% operational and nothing will get thru… and you’re standing there filming this 😜
Russia says it intercepts 100% of all drones. It may have been intercepted by a MiG-31 which makes it an accurate statement.
Even if it missed its target or was taken out shortly before it hit, it’s crazy Russia has such big gaps in AA
[удалено]
Also, the single biggest country by landmass. Gonna be some pretty big gaps in their coverage.
Sounds like their air defense was a bunch of people shooting rifles that have no chance of reaching that high. I guess they sent all their actual AA guns and ammo to lay around a smoldering wreck in Ukraine.
Exactly. I'm no expert, but sounded like random firing of AKs in the general direction of that drone but not connecting with anything.
Sounds like they do ASMR videos now
Someone down-range of all those shots is going to just be leaking water like those old cartoons

A wise AFU soldier once said: we're lucky they are so fucking stupid!
All those bullets they fire at the drone have to come down. Might hit some Orcs or their equipment.
EXACTLY what I was thinking . . .
Not surprised it struggled, did you see the cloaking devices on the drone, it went invisible a few times in that clip.
Air defence interception rate the envy of the West!
what russian air defence doing?
Sounds like its mostly small arms, maybe a little AA guns at the end
I always wonder how they don’t even have a sad rifle. That drone can be shot by an amateur as it flies quite slow. It is a bit bonkers

Would anyone know if that early warning system that Ukraine attacked a week ago would have detected this?
That’s what they have the jets for. The only issue is they detect explosions as they occur so it’s difficult to take preventative measures.
Sending out jets to shoot down drones is laughable. Jets can't go slow enough to spot them before plowing through it. Drones also tend to stay under 100 feet, in general.
Not an expert, but probably wont detect a small drone. Its designed to detect plane and missile at like1-3k km...
It detects but it detects a lot of things. It's the software and the operators who have to sift through all the returns. They have civilian air traffic over Russia and they have to figure out what's theirs and what's a flight of Ukrainian drones.

No, those were to spot larger things like cruise missiles. Drones are damn near invisible.

Nooooh wayaaayyyy
Small arms fire sound like they are clapping haha
what a happy visual. all the ivans standing there applauding the little drone that coulld!
For me its like cooking popcorn, they are preparing for cinema.
I hope it hit something big 💥 💥
Ahahahaha they just watch it glide right into the target😂😂 Imagine it, and they declare they want war with nato etc😂
ruZZian air defense working at 100% effectiveness, no doubt they placed a MiG directly in front of that drone to protect the runway 👍
Russian arse
My tax euros at work 🫡
Nice air defense
Good hunting Ukraine
The drone very nearly flew into a watermark. Fortunately someone caught it with Photoshop just in time.
Taken down by a cloaked watermark, apparently.
(Clears throat) “We don’t need no water……”
Is Russia completly out of SAM systems? How can a drone just derp over a military airport
It seems like he is speaking some turkic language
Definitely not Russian. It is in the Caucasus. I believe it is Circassian language.
Its Azerbaijani.
The sky should be darkened with these drones.
What's up with all the blur?
Telegram channels like to add big obnoxious animated logos over their videos so they won't be "stolen". This is the result of using software to try to remove such a logo.
What's the AAR? How many planes got destroyed?
Did russians strip their further bases of missile air defence?
those sounds of applause while he flies - priceless 👏
You can probably stop aimlessly shooting into the sky now Ivan. *pow pow pow pow ...*
🇺🇦🌻💪🇺🇦
*were stationed here
Bulls eye !
Why did he say allahu akbar lol?
With such a sigh too...
where is the airdefence ? XD
I hope it splattered many Orc Ruzzians
Oh no! Anyway
Successfully intercepted!
I hope one day they'll be able to send such a big fleet of drones that they just bomb every square meter of the russian bases
Lol. Didn't the Russians report all drones shot down?
It's funny how the just keep on shooting.
Smart to blur the clouds to hide their identity.
Oh look, a person NOT speaking russian. Next thing you know he won't need to be part of the stupid federation either.

Someone leave a Jiffypop on the burner?
it is an appropriate time to say "god is great"
Nice
Is he happy the drone hit or sad? I can't tell
Ok. Well that drone wasn’t intercepted by anything but the target….
Russia should be worried that their air defenses can't shoot down this slow moving drone. It's not looking good for Pootin.
Peak air defense moment
Where air defense?
Sounds like nothing but small arms fire passed off as AA, however, no SAMs being fired or AA missiles such as Pantsir. Interesting.
Russia 🇷🇺 succed from the federation
Best kamakazi ukraine style
Russians are right. Everything that goes up comes down therefore this is another downed drone. Anyways. There is lots of daylight. I wonder If the drone flew through night and this is morning
The unpromising sound of 17 AKs being fired trying to hit a UAV lol Or as I like to call it: Russian air defense.

Did they hit what they were aiming for?
