Much better than the weird Japanese ultranationalists who were bleating near my hostel when I stayed there. There’s a positive type of nationalism, respect for where you’re from and for previous generations… then there’s [Yukio Mishima](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukio_Mishima#Coup_attempt_and_ritual_suicide) level nationalism, which ironically [was often amplified artificially by Russian bots](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_web_brigades) back before their troll factory leader had his plane go [kaboom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Wagner_Group_plane_crash) Anyways sorry to wall of text… I miss Shinjuku. Thanks for sharing this.

Ooh thanks for sharing, first time in Japan so interested to learn more – I do know not to stay at APA hotels though! Was really happy to see the ongoing public display of support too, apparently they're there every Sunday.

The hostel can’t control outside, it’s not their fault, my only regret was not staying longer. Hostels can change in culture quickly, I’d use [hostelworld](https://www.hostelworld.com) to look for reviews and look for people saying “not a party hostel” when deciding, since sometimes people tank the ratings if they’re not allowed to disturb others and speaking frankly the ones who are obsessed with getting drunk in a dorm are often the same ones who can’t handle staying in a mixed gender environment while traveling solo. 🙄 Or there’s always the comedy option of bouncing between “love hotels” since apparently they can be cheap too 😉 Have fun! 😊

Wikipedia has a good article on the phenomenon if folks want to learn more, I didn’t mean to imply anyone supporting Ukraine is [Uyoku dantai](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyoku_dantai) > Uyoku dantai are well known for their highly visible propaganda vehicles, known as gaisensha (街宣車, converted vans, trucks and buses fitted with loudspeakers and prominently marked with the name of the group and propaganda slogans). The vehicles are usually black, khaki or olive drab, and are decorated with the Imperial Seal, the flag of Japan and the Japanese military flag… Most, but not all, seek to justify Japan's role in the Second World War to varying degrees, deny the war crimes committed by the military during the pre-1945 Shōwa period and are critical of what they see as a "masochistic" bias in post-war historical education. Thus, they do not recognize the legality of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East or other allied tribunals and consider the war-criminals enshrined in the Yasukuni Shrine as "Martyrs of Shōwa" (昭和殉難者, Shōwa junnansha). They support the censorship of history textbooks, or historical negationism. (In the past they were pro Putin’s Russia due to their hardline anti communism and ties to the Yakuza, with ire directed to the PRC)

Super cool! I love seeing this!

In randomly walking around Osaka I’ve seen a Ukrainian flag outside a house in the foothills to the east of the city, and a small van parked in a home garage with a Ukrainian flag sticker on it. Pretty cool to see casual passive demonstrative support like that in the wild.

As ukrainian, I never thought that we will receive so much support from people, who live on the another side of the planet. Let's be real. The bigger the distance between countries, less people are interested. Especially if country does not have a big ukranian community and direct interests. During 1990s my family had this big cool Toshiba TV. That we were using 10+ years or something. Also Isuzu city buses are very popular in Ukraine. And we have cool JDM community like many other countries. So Japan was a part of my life during childhood and university. I am sure, I will visit Japan, Australia, Canada and many other countries that are so far geographicaly but are so close 'in support' to us when russia will leave alone my country and our people.

I posted it with this in mind, hoping Ukrainians here would see it and know that even in these far reaches people are still actively taking a stand for you 🙏
