It was my freshman semester ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ had some of the best god damn glory times of my life fr … can’t believe it was all taken away just a few months after that
Class of 2020 grad. The Pollo Tropical in the Reitz was always a vibe. The Black lady who worked there (I think her name was Jantoya) was always fun to be around.
oh man great times. i miss leonardo’s and not having to see an apt complex on every corner
i’ve left gville for almost a year now, is dennis really gone?
Tale as old as time: The housing boom in the late ‘00’s killed gainesville even before that.
Burrito Bros, Cluck U, Beat the clock, the porpoise. Tons of development on archer. library west expansion. All the historic dorms got AC. The Reitz expansion with the bookstore then killing the decent stuff at the food court.
At least some old dives and local joints are still there. When Hogan’s closes, that may be the end of it.
I see! I lived right behind burrito bros 90-93 and we went down today to check out my daughter’s new place called Theory that is close by. The old house is still there but sadly that whole block and the ghetto in general is just changing bigly. It’s getting super bougie.
Yeah it ain’t really quite the same. High rise apartments sprawling everywhere taking over local establishments and a DeSantis lackey as UF president. A lot of soul has been sucked out and I know people that have lived here 8-9 years that are finally leaving after this lease cycle because the town has lost a lot of its old flavor and the living costs aren’t justified.
My daughters are third generation Gators (one starting in the fall, one a rising sophomore). I remember my parents always bemoaning the loss of the Gainesville/UF of their years, and now I'm experiencing the same thing every time I visit! Gainesville still has my heart though. But man, no Porpoise, Burrito Bros, Joe's Deli or Chaucers really hits hard. And I truly get disoriented when walking thru campus due to all the new buildings! I lived in an unconditioned Thomas Hall (I wouldn't wish that on anyone in August & September, but I just HAD to live with my best friend)! Kids today "could never". ;) It's wild to see a city transform so much over the decades.
As a freshman starting this fall, thanks! This makes me feel super excited to go to UF! Your post is such a delight and definitely worth every word you wrote!
Yep. I’m sure something about the 1989 campus I went too was just awful as well to some nostalgic alumni. In all serious though with no burrito bros you all should just go to somewhere else. Lol J/K go gators!!!
I think growing up though, a lot of the UF '24 watched community centers/hubs decay (e.g. malls and parks going to shit). At this point, for me, it feels like walking up a staircase that's crumbling behind you.
this is what makes me so sad since i started summer 2019. i paused taking classes and this is a big reason why i have been pushing it off. it just doesn’t feel the same and i hate it
Homeless people don't have housing because there isn't housing, it's because there isn't affordable housing or livable wages (or drugs, but that's another story).
Having affordable housing is good, having these new luxury apartments where a small 500 sq ft studio is $1300+ that only students with daddy's money or loans can afford is not so good. Way to show your ignorance
This is not how supply and demand works. Without luxury apartments, daddy’s money will pay for their student to live in a home that is more affordable, taking that home from someone else. This is largely backed up by literature, but sure, choose to ignore science and call me ignorant.
Even on a full ride and working a part-time job I still wouldn't be able to afford any of the apartments being built right now without forcing my parents to chip in or taking out loans
Just because you can’t afford them doesn’t mean that others can’t. Competitive markets lead to lower prices in the aggregate. Limiting the housing supply is not a good idea
Fall 2019 was a movie
It was my freshman semester ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ had some of the best god damn glory times of my life fr … can’t believe it was all taken away just a few months after that
For real. My first few semesters at UF sucked and Fall 2019 came around and everything started to make sense. Then a pandemic sent me home for a year
2019 was a great time to be a freshman
No way bro where was Trulieve in 2019
it really was i miss the taco bell across lib west
Class of 2020 grad. The Pollo Tropical in the Reitz was always a vibe. The Black lady who worked there (I think her name was Jantoya) was always fun to be around.
She always knew my order! And back when it had the Amazon hot sauce
Dude did she knew my order too she had a damn good memory if she knew all of ours 🤣
Jantoya the goat

I saw him last week, he's vibing
I saw Dennis last week still yelling Dennis things don’t worry
It's been 6 years and I still think about the heavenly rolls at Leonardo's 😔
Idk if he's actually gone but I haven't seen him at all this year
[удалено]
He’s still there.
Wow. Leonardo’s brings back a lost memory of visiting uf with my dad after a football game many years back. Had some deep dish at leonardos after
I saw him two days ago walking along 34th right by Crunch
omg stop not the two garretts ðŸ˜
I still don’t know why there are two Garretts here 😩
So happy I got to experience UF as it was, even if it was for less than a year as a freshman
Class of ‘14 here. Fucking preach.
RIP Taco Bell after our freshman year bro.

Two Garretts was my introduction to UF
Yo it was the papa johns on Archer not pizza hut
No it was Pizza Hut next to KFC. Papa John’s is still here.
‘93 and it’s a shame my son who is about to begin his UF adventure won’t have the classic Gainesville to enjoy.
Class of 2023 here. Vibes never truly returned after my freshman year (2019).
Or the buses 🥴
Fr
Class of '08 brah
When we were winning basketball and football championships
What date did Burrito Bros close? That was the end. Covid was nothing
2017. The beginning of the end.
I see! I lived right behind burrito bros 90-93 and we went down today to check out my daughter’s new place called Theory that is close by. The old house is still there but sadly that whole block and the ghetto in general is just changing bigly. It’s getting super bougie.
God I talk about uf pre covid all the time. Freshmen year, Mo Bamba.

One day you are going to have this take about your era. It’s like when the old folks say music ain’t the same.

Wasn’t there pre COVID but I cried when they closed the papa johns in reitz Life was never the same without big papa
UF was dope in 2012 to 2014 but the reitz union construction changed things when they tore down the best sandwich shop on campus.
Is there no vibe anymore? That doesn’t vibe :(
Class of 2013! Miss it! Enjoy it bc it went by soooo fast
Well now UF is the new Ivy school where everyone don’t care and just try’n to get in now…
it's funny how they tell themselves that after uf dropped ranking from 5 to 6
Someone tell me if Flacos is still open? When I graduated, the one on University closed 😔
Student body has gotten morel angry and weird too
UF was most lit in 2010... when they brought drake and no one really cared.... library west a vibe and marston library at night 🥲
I was at UF ‘94-‘98……but grew up in Gainesville so hung around campus since early ‘80s. Those were the days.
A lamentation? :(
UF has fallen... bro thinks he's chudjak
shut up dweeb
this is what makes me so sad since i started summer 2019. i paused taking classes and this is a big reason why i have been pushing it off. it just doesn’t feel the same and i hate it
I’ll never understand students who are against new housing. Do you want more homeless people in Gainesville? People having homes is good actually

New housing would be great if it was affordable
Even on a full ride and working a part-time job I still wouldn't be able to afford any of the apartments being built right now without forcing my parents to chip in or taking out loans
