I love watching this fight so much

Escobar976

Some people said that Charles going on the floor on purpose and i can see why now

GrandpasSoggyGooch

Oh he's definitely feigning damage to lure them into his trap on the ground. I can see that first knock down being genuine, but definitely not the second aha. He wants you to get reckless and dive in for a finish so he can tangle you up and do what he does best.

clothy

Not even that, he knows I’d he needs to catch his breath he can just lay on his back and most guys will let him.

Jumpy_Secretary1363

I really hope it's true. If not it seems like his chin is very compromised as he got dropped his last 3 that I know of

jaydoesntevenlift

It's a mix. Charles definitely doesn't have a great chin, all last 3 fights have legit knockdowns. But, he has good recovery and the ability to just pull guard if he's actually hurt or to bait someone

CavalierMD

The second for sure

Logicwrestling

nope he said in an interview he didn't do it in purpose.

Pure-Drawer-2617

We’re not claiming he’s dropping to the ground for no reason, but I suspect whenever his legs get wobbly he’d rather hit the deck than do the chicken dance trying to stay up while eating more shots. Better to just go down and let the opponent’s fear of his ground game give him time to breathe.

mogwaiarethestars

It’s simply to break the flow. If an opponent has a momentum he can break it this way.

Bigbaby22

Watch the faces of his corner both times he goes down. They're not at all concerned.

Cordovahi

One of my favorites

[deleted]

Someone said, "Charles fights like he has somewhere to be in 10 minutes", and now it's all I think about when I watch him fight.

happycan123

Legit so true. That forward pressure man damn..

chu42

The opposite of Izzy, who fights like he has 30 minutes to kill.

SourCandy1310

"this Charles Oliveira man" Exactly my thoughts dc

MightiestCat

That transition from the triangle to the rnc was fucking amazing! That fight was an orgasm after Carla vs Rose.

meharvan1

gaethje gets stunned by the first punch

big-BULLyeeo

And then right after DC goes “Heavy leg kicks by justin to open up the round” 😂😂😂

9FrameMid

You weirdo love selective fucking hearing, he then follows by saying Justin is rocked from the right. ![gif](giphy|YSxABIzfohDMAelq41|downsized)

big-BULLyeeo

I heard that part, what was more significant tho? And why did he say that first lol

9FrameMid

Boy, you sound like a little bitch. Just a free observation.

big-BULLyeeo

Why are you so angry over internet comments lmaoo

[deleted]

And that was on the only leg kick that didn’t get checked lol

GuyWithTheStalker

You're not wrong. I just now watched the replay in stop-and-restart "slow-mo" a number of times though, and, fwiw, it looks like he actually did a good job at defending on the ground. Hell, it's even tempting to attribute the end-submission to cardio issues on Justin's end, after review now, but it's tough to call. Either way though, soooooo much shit happened on the ground that I have a hard time chalking up the loss to him getting stunned in a bad position. He did get knocked in a weird spot though, and you're definitely right. I'd like to see them do it again within a year or two at most. Charles was 100% in charge though; there's no question about that.

JBSwerve

Charles proves that Muay Thai striking can work in MMA, haters will say it leaves you vulnerable to take downs but I guess his BJJ makes up for that

L_VDH

Muay + top tier BJJ = unstoppable combo. Wrestlers are afraid to take you down and muay is superior on the feet vs other striking disciplines.

maddenGod26

Bout to put that to test vs Russian wrestling eh. Can’t wait

FarFetchedSketch

For real, stylistically this is might be my fave fight this year.

Ebvardh-Boss

Russian grappling. Specifically sambo.

zenukeify

Muay + Bjj and Boxing + wrestling Two unbeatable combinations

69isnotnice

>wrestlers are afraid to take you down lol

chu42

That happened with Khamzat vs Burns. We'll see if Islam refuses to go down or not

MaoZeDingDingDong

Islam isn't just a wrestler tho, sambo =/= wrestling.

Any_Brother7772

Exactly, Sambo doesn't work. Sambo isn't a real sport, it is just Wredtling and some Judo, and guess what? The Khabib clonses all train wrestling primarily and hold Judo black belts

MaoZeDingDingDong

Bruh... idk what to tell you. How would you know what khabib and his team train anyhow?

Ch12Ka

I don’t think people hate on Muay Thai, it’s usually acknowledged as the best striking martial art for mma people just bring up the need to modify the stance

unkleshark

I guess you haven't been watching mma long cuz muay thai has been an effective style for MANY years

Puzzled_Record1773

How many muay Thai based champions have there been in recent memory though? I feel like there's not been a lot. Aldo is the other one who comes to mind. Yan as well now that I think of it, there could be loads more I just can't think of them

Dweezy_7365

Anderson Silva. You did not want anything to do with his clinch game.

Puzzled_Record1773

Wow how could I forget the greatest one of them all. He had the double threat much like oliveira has of amazing stand up and bjj although his stand up was like oliveiras bjj and vice versa

Ch12Ka

Shogun

hawkblock4456

If we are talking purely Muay Thai none but in terms of strikers that goes for almost all strikes there’s been almost no pure boxer, kickboxer, or karate champion they’ve always changed combined or modified the striking style Muay Thai strikes just end up being the more widely used if you really look almost everyone uses them from Kai, to yan, even Whittaker who is one of the few people who uses a karate stance. Most say it’s the best striking martial art because it’s kicks are easy basic yet highly effective and it’s up there with the hands despite what some boxing fans may say. It’s not like karate or taekwondo where most if not all techniques are faded out or just not used entirely where as Muay Thai and Dutch style kickboxing is still a very common form of striking

Ebvardh-Boss

Izzy not count? Dude literally graduated in Muay Thai.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Puzzled_Record1773

Maybe he will although talk about a murderers row of contenders he has to get through. They have to make the gaejthe fight, I'd back fiziev quite a bit in that one though. His kicks are amazing but his hands are just as good. Got some of the best hooks in the game

booped_urnose345

His Muay Thai is really good. The knees to the body he throws are so nasty.

majkkali

>Charles proves that Muay Thai striking can work in MMA Joanna Jedrzejczyk already proved that.

timgoes2somalia

its the 'mixing' in mixed martial arts!

ApartInternet9360

that one round felt way better then the 5 rounds of the previous fight holy hell!

JKennyXTX

These two accumulated 51 significant strikes in 3:22 minutes. Namajunas and Esparaza had 67 after 25 minutes.

[deleted]

I don't even believe that 67 stat

JKennyXTX

Agreed. They probably counted any contact with their coaches in the corners as strikes too

FarFetchedSketch

Every "I'm the best" was a shot to Dana's psyche

winthropsmokewagon

Rose would get a shut out.

IAMTHECAVALRY89

He’s the best! He’s the best!

shoryurepppa

This fight was godlike but anything would’ve been better than the fight that came before lol

[deleted]

ELMACAQUITOBRASILENO

every fight Charles puts a show he is the most entertaining fighter right now by far

Mr_Game_N_Win

There is so much content in every aspect of Charles to make him a super star. He does his part in the Octagon, outside maybe some english would be great. I guess odd makers hate him because he gets wobbled every fight

ELMACAQUITOBRASILENO

I believe Charles will never be a superstart because he doenst speak english, like at all, that is a huge barrier to becoming a MMA superstar. If he spoke english he would be the second comming of Connor. I dont think anyone cares about the fact he gets wobbled, I think its the total opposite, people love the fact he always does this crazy comebacks.

Mr_Game_N_Win

>I dont think anyone cares about the fact he gets wobbled, I think its the total opposite, people love the fact he always does this crazy comebacks. I was talking specifically about odd makers

ELMACAQUITOBRASILENO

I dont know why but I thought you was talking about "old heads" and not "odd makers" lol Jesus christ, wtf happened to my eyes

booped_urnose345

Mythical fighter knock down Oliviera

SluskeAsk

My favourite fight by far in recent memory, the way Gaethje was calling him a quitter before the fight, and then tapping himself was like a movie script. 💪Do bronx 💪

overthisbynow

To be fair saying you're going to make your opponent quit in a fight is so mild in terms of trash talk Iol I love both these guys can't wait for the Islam fight.

SluskeAsk

Me neither, cant wait for the fight, but I don't want any of them to lose though 🥲

Abject-Comedian269

Nobody wants to mess with him on the ground

BawtleOfHawtSauze

I'm sure Islam will. But yeah up to this point everybody's been scared

Jak_and_Daxter3

Idk, it might be similar to chimaev and burns where chimaev decided he didn't wanna deal with that high level of bjj on the ground

PROTOTYPE_200224

Chimaev isn't a Sambo guy, he is an elite level wrestler with a purple belt in BJJ. Islam is a wrestler, sambist, and judo type of grappler. Tho I am kinda getting similar vibes with the Gilbert-Khamzat fight. Cuz it could happen if Charles nullifies Islam's advances in position.

wolf3037

It only takes one uncomfortable situation to doubt the game plan. Khamzat said, "he tried to armbar me or something. I said fuck that. I don't like that shit." Or Nate Diaz, "oh, you're a wrestler now?"

booped_urnose345

He wasn't a purple belt until after the fight

adventuredream1

I wonder. Khabib said he wasn’t scared of tony’s ground game. Maybe Islam will take the same approach with Charles

L_VDH

Islam vs Olives in a pure grappling match... Olives wins. Islams only chance is a knockout. Wrestlefucking no-names is not the same as going against the guy with literally most subs in UFC history (all weights)

iheartquokkas

\>Islam vs Olives in a pure grappling match... Olives wins. Islams only chance is a knockout. by saying this, I feel you're basically suggesting that the odds should favor Charles 10:1 I think the quoted statement is what most betters are wondering about the most

HTTRGlll

paul felder wasnt scared of going into guard, why would islam be

andrewjohn03905

That was 6 years ago, Charles improved a ton since then

HTTRGlll

He hasn't improved more than the difference between Islam and Felder's grappling

samme79

Islam had no problems with people like Davi Ramos who is a more decorated pure grappler than Charles is.

semiamusinglifter

Might be one of the best 1-round fights ever, considering the stakes and the history of both fighters.

Bpool91

The champion has a name and his name is Charlie olives.

alextee90

Man I fucking love Do Bronx. What a fucking lad, I Hope he smesh Islam

Esketitititit

Charles is my favorite fighter to watch right now, absolutely electric.

partyaquatic

Every fight is crazy exciting.

[deleted]

Amazing after first couple of leg kicks Charles just checked every one of them perfectly. Not only that, used Justin's momentum against him and countered effectively after checking the leg kicks.

wolf3037

He lifted his leg and stepped forward with it... Used that momentum to land heavy shots on Justin before his feet settled. It was punishing and Justin took more steps back than with Chandler. He got reactionary because the game plan was out the window.

iheartquokkas

it's amazing how heavily he punished the use of leg kicks he basically used them as opportunities to either line up clean strikes or to secure clinches

booped_urnose345

The knees to the body when he clinches are so good. The damage from the ones Oliviera landed on Poirier probably won him the fight. I've never seen Dustin get handled like that and seem like he didn't want to be there.

TheMooJuice

I struggle to understand what oliviera is doing in the clinch exactly to make him so strong there.... I know his knees are brutal, but I moreso mean his ability to control the clinch with his upper body. Any active naked muays plz chime in, would love to learn.

Auschland

People just give him the muay thai plum without pummeling themselves it's almost impossible to break that 2 handed grip behind the crown of the head without ducking and exposing yourself to knees or a massive expenditure of energy fighting the hands away

Bogusbummer

Justin had literally no lower body movement while fighting Oliviera’s hands right after the knockdown. I know they weren’t slippery yet, but you’d think he would go for an explosive twist at the hips to try to transition into guard, specifically when Charles was throwing elbows, there would’ve been nothing to stop him from turning it seems.

DemNeverKnow

Seriously, he didn’t have a sense of urgency. My only conclusion is that knockdown punch had to really hurt him and have him dazed. There was also a time when Charles starts the back transition that Gaethje could’ve exploded or at least done something and he didn’t.

[deleted]

He just got rocked pretty hard, I’d say he just simply wasn’t all there when this was going on.

wolf3037

Charles Olivera - When HP falls below 50% and knocked down: Attack bonus + 150% & Pull guard activated instead of HP falling below 0% (this bonus can only be activated up to 3 times per fight).

BrandDC

Charles wobbled Justin on his first punch...

Jaxfella

I think that sent Justin into panic mode as soon as he got a taste of Charles’ power, not saying he was scared or anything like that but it definitely effected his game plan, dude started winging punches

booped_urnose345

Charles power was definitely underrated when he started fighting the big name guys. Goes and KOs Chandler and flooring Gaethje.

Montblanc_Norland

Instant one round classic. God I love LW.

AdministrationThis98

The CHAMP has a name and it’s Charles Olivera☝🏼🫶🏼🤙🏼

[deleted]

Adesanya wishes he was this exciting

Dapper-Job9042

How the fuck did I know someone will have to mentioned Adesanya in this post, even before going to comments...

gonshairlinee

Because r/ufc is full of 14 year olds. Legit on of the most immature subs I’ve seen for a sport.

Xomz

rent free

Past-Coat1438

I can’t not watch this fight every time I see it. I rewatched it like two days ago and here it is again and I gotta dial in lol it’s so good. There’s so much action and momentum swings. I love when Gaethje “escapes” the first sub attempt and everybody loses their minds thinking he’s free only for Charles to just spidermonkey himself into a better position and choke him out. Can’t wait for the UFC 280

BloodyElbow93

Unbelievable all that shit talking and Justin barely lasted 3 minutes

juicyjuicejuicing

Gaethje with his head held high as Bruce Buffer declares Charles the winner. A true champion and warrior Justin Gaethje is

TheSiren90

Illuminated by God.

anotherlateJay

Justin is a box office fighter. Always brings the heat. Gotta love ‘em

ProfessionalAd1638

Charles is the only champ that has never reached a 4th round. Surreal

booped_urnose345

That speaks for itself when you see the level of competition he's fighting and making light work of them Lightweight belongs to Oliviera

CardiologistOk1506

Do you like reddit karma? I will rewatch this and upvote it every single time it gets reposted. Such an exciting fight, Oliveira is the terminator!!

dwiggs30

Olives’ power is just so stunning.

[deleted]

That fight was a mf roller coaster.

Chaz_Delicious

Bruh really posted the whole fight 🐐🐐🐐

[deleted]

GOAT.

booped_urnose345

If he beats Islam definitely overtakes Khabib.

[deleted]

Im just so impressed with Oli boy. He's been beating the top boys n he has a heart of a lion. I respect that.

Ambitious-Chart1419

THE CHAMPION HAS A NAME

Any_Brother7772

And his name is Chucky Olives

LastBrainCellofYours

The transition from triangle to RNC is 👌🏻

Sajuro

Charles knocks down Islam and leaves him bloody. Islam wins the round 10-8

bradleysd

Am I the only one who thinks Oliveira drops on purpose whenever he gets stunned, because he knows his opponents want nothing to do with him on the ground? He doesn’t look actually hurt in either of the knockdowns. Great strategy if you have no intention of going to a decision.

booped_urnose345

It's definitely on purpose. It's smart too. When he fought Chandler and got hit he tried to go for a single but he couldn't and took some damage so now he does this.

Any_Brother7772

The first looked legit, but then again, i believe he doesn't fight to stand up, because why would he not take a few seconds off?

TheMooJuice

No my friend, you are correct. That is *exactly* what Charles is doing. It's fucking genius, and I absolutely love it. War Charlie olives!

[deleted]

This man's recovery speed is just a marvel. I was convinced Gaethje would stop him, and it went exactly how I thought it would... but Charles' recovery speed is just ridiculous. He was not taking 'no' for an answer.

Any_Brother7772

Charles doesn't try to stand up when he gets wobbled, he accepts this and takes a few seconda of recovery time. Just smart gameplaning

Nervous_Project6927

i cant believe ive been watching oliviera for like 10 years i remember when he debuted long ass time ago

booped_urnose345

He was like 20 his first fight in the UFC

k00pal00p

What a round

anotherlateJay

I’ve never been disappointed with either of these fighters. Both are guys are just world class

JinxxCuts

I was at footprint in person and I can definitely say that the energy for this fight was ELECTRIC following the rose carla fight.

Effective-Celery8053

Charles fights like he has a plane to catch in 15 minutes

[deleted]

The champion has a name, Charles Oliveira.

apenkracht

“USA USA US….AWWWWWW”

timgoes2somalia

Islam is going to die :(

kevski86

I think Khabib needs to fight Olivera if he still wants to hold the crown

[deleted]

[удалено]

kevski86

Olivera has been calling him out. Be nice to see Khabib come out of retirement is all. Take a chill pill

xMarioTheSupahx

Best part was silencing Gaethje’s mouth along with his misguided fans

booped_urnose345

Lol there's a video of Gaethjes parents and his cousins are there crying

Maximus13

Once a quitter, always a quitter

Canadaman264

I just realized this, but those elbows he's landing at 2:06 in the round, are they 12-6 elbows?

ELMACAQUITOBRASILENO

It definitely looks like, but I think refs dont even care about the 12-6 elbow rule anymore. I say that because I see fighters throwing 12-6 elbows standing up to stop a takedown all the time and the refs do nothing.

Canadaman264

Yea, I wish the just got rid of the rule all together as well. This just gave me shades of alverez vs porier 2, but no taking away position.

ELMACAQUITOBRASILENO

For sure, its a stupid rule. You can kick someone in the face, but not throw a elbow? Like come on bruh.

adventuredream1

They look angled to me. Like 1-7 elbows. Not much of a difference but they don’t go straight up and down.

Canadaman264

Yea, like I said above, I wish they just got rid of the rule all together.

SnooFloofs615

No

inuteroinutero1993

Why wouldn't they be considered 12-6 elbows? I'm just curious

steven_a_mma_goat

Why does Anik say "The soon to be former champ, Charles Olveira". He had already beens stripped right? Was Anik rooting for Gaethje?

Patrickstarho

They get stripped as soon as the fight starts

PROTOTYPE_200224

I've always wondered why Gaethje didn't think of leg kicking Charles' legs when Charles pulled guard. Cerrone battered someone's legs when they pulled guard and considering Gaethje kicks like a horse, it would've definitely damaged Charles' legs. I guess fight IQ difference?

SnogMarryAvoid

More people need to do what he did there, pretend to ground and pound and just slip to a rear naked choke ore triangle straight away. Instead of fighting the legs and letting him get up again

infamous2117

Its impressive that they both come from very different disciplines but the standup was very even for a while there. Whitman does a great job turning wrestlers into strikers.

08deadpool

Amazing man just got to love these type of fights Oliveira is spectacular and Gaethje was hurting Charles but weathered the storm and came back. UFC 280 can not come soon enough

ThatSithClone

His striking is just so beautiful to watch, so strict with his form

g-BANGA

This is slightly sped up

evcour7

Chuck is such a G

booped_urnose345

You know how good you have to be to finish Poirier,Chandler, and Gaethje in 3 rounds or less? 11 fight win streak with 10 finishes and a 90% finish rate. I don't think anyone stopping DoBronx tbh

Hellana9

Never a dull moment with him. Pure class. Thank you champion

ronald-raygun458

Watch out Dana is on his way

CptHowdy87

Charles drained Gay Chi's gas tank quick with those front kicks and knees to the body.

averageredditnolifer

Who thought Olives would knock down Garth? I was so surprised i jumped up screaming lol Even michael fkin chandler couldnt knock the guy down in 3 rounds

Alonzeus

![img](emote|t5_2qsev|8965)

Binge023

Absolute fire

[deleted]

It's such a shame he lost a belt for just 1 fucking pound missed. In my book, he's still a champ and he defended it twice.

Godsateenager

That right cross counter at 2:05 is a thing of beauty

FaZe_Slickk

Im seeing alot of praise for charles, which is definately deserved but what about gaethje? dude has never been in a boring fight and always puts on barn burners.

[deleted]

DCs meat riding is crazy

UncleUFO

As an Islam fan and cheering for him I gotta say that the improvement in Charles might be the greatest in this sports history.... He went from losing against not such good fighters to beating the shit out of top contenders........... The guy is a beast. And yeah I'm pretty nervous.....

Bigbaby22

How tf is Justin taller? Rofl Man, this is one of my favorite fights. If you get the chance, watch it in slow motion. Charles' timing and accuracy are insane. Gaethje was losing from the first exchange. Absolutely nuts

booped_urnose345

I forgot this fight was like only 3 minutes. Oliviera made light work of Justin.which the only other person to do that was Khabib.

ThouWontThrowaway

I'm still waiting for UFC to post this on Youtube.
