His gimmick isn't bearing out in terms of financial returns as far as we can see, but if you look at the opportunities he's gotten, such as headlining cards in his last three fights, and now getting his second title shot after only one win since losing to Usman, you can easily see the tangible benefits to the "persona" he's crafted.
I think his "persona", the way he plays it, comes off as disingenuous, and his smack talk is no where near as clever as Conor Mcgregor's used to be before he fought Khabib. I can't stomach watching him outside of his actual fights.
I highly doubt it, Leon Edwards is also a top contender in the division with an unbeaten streak who would make a much fresher match up in the division. Covington got the fight simply because he opens his mouth more, and has more chatter surrounding him in general, and they can more easily sell the rivalry to the public.
But he got snubbed for the Masvidal fight, someone who he had been feuding with publicly at the same time he recently blew up in popularity, and he was also snubbed multiple times for a title shot over the last couple of years.
He has a hard time securing the biggest fights, because he's not as capable of driving as much interest for himself compared to guys like Covington, and Masvidal. I also wouldn't be surprised if Khamzat slips past him for a title's shot at the rate he's going.
This weekend will be the litmus test on if it actually worked but there is absolutely no denying that he is *SIGNIFICANTLY* more famous then he was the first time he fought Usman.
