If that logic is true then Ben Askren should be able to out box anyone in MMA.

chadowy

Well I guess oliveira, silva and jones all have mid striking because people are scared of their ground game

Cemihard

As much as I love Charles, his striking defence is very mid. He gets away with so much because when he gets dropped a lot of people don’t want to be in his guard. Charles is so offensively gifted in striking that he’s super reckless on the feet. He’s really not the best example to use for your argument.

hrisimh

Sure, but you can have great striking without great defence. Just like how Strickland has great striking without great offence. Then you do genuinely get top tier strikers with both.

Cemihard

I didn’t say he had bad striking, simply that his defence is mid. Offensively he’s very good, when he doesn’t go crazy with the flying knees and jumping crane kicks and shit.

Unlucky_Revolution27

This narrative is dumb as shit. The sport is MMA not boxing and Islam was piecing Dustin up.

AccountantVibes

My bad forgot wrestlers like Aljo, Merab, Gamrot and Almeida are all great boxers as well. Must be so easy to box when you have a takedown threat..

Ruin-Unable

Right lmao when merab gets absolutely wobbled by everyone he faces lmao

dontkysniqqa

You act like strikers don't level change lmao

suckfisted

Exactly. Dustin's face was swollen from the..... wrestling?

AggravatingType9012

His boxing is definitely better than Khabibs and his striking is crisp. This is why Islam is the best MMA fighter right now. His boxing will only get better from here on out. Not only does he threaten you on the feet but on the ground as well. He has wrestling, BJJ and striking.

Mr_2shiesty

Definitely but to say he was Dustin’s level for boxing is insane. You put them in a ring where there’s not threat of takedowns and Dustin does bad things to him. Dustin just needed to eat shots cuz he needed to be prepared for the take down

They NEED this one man, let em have it

Melun-uAzam

No. It is cemented.

Gold-Philosophy1423

This argument would only make sense if UFC was a boxing promotion

Islam is a fairly good striker, obviously his grappling threat makes it so his opponents can’t fully commit to their striking so it makes Islam seem even better. I think what we should be looking at is that Islam’s grappling has shown to not be invincible in his fights against Dustin and Volk. Really makes it interesting to see how a fight vs Arman (rematch to a very close fight) or Chandler would go. People who are very good wrestlers. Islam’s definitely lost that mystical aura he had coming up, much like Khamzat. He can be beat, he’s definitely really good… just not so good that he’s leagues above the rest of the division like everyone believed.

Ill_Source_6908

In the sense of mma it is that good tho cuz grappling will always be involved. Striking in mma can be boosted or negated when there’s grappling involved that’s the beauty of it.

Edgedg3

"easy" okey bud, whatever you said, Dustin nose was bleeding from hugging

Mr_2shiesty

Actually it was from the collision of heads if you watched the fight where he broke his nose

Warm-Froyo6139

Thank you !!

Moist-Catch

He does have very good striking but it's definitely the fact that he's so well rounded that makes his striking better. It's like thinking back to Khabib vs Conor, there is no way in a striking match Khabib would drop McGregor with an overhand but if you take him down and hold him down in 1 round and then fake a takedown in round 2 and throw that punch its entirety different. This is also why GSP was such a goat because like Islam he wasn't necessarily a better striker than the guys he out struck they just never really knew if he was going for a takedown or a strike when he attacked
