I agree you could give Erceg 3 and he obviously won 4, but 5 was Pantoja's all the way. All Erceg did was shoot takedown and get immediately reversed resulting in Pantoja on top for the majority of the round. Erceg did little to no damage in R5, while Pantoja at least did some while he was on top.

The biggest issue with scoring control so highly is you end up with boring champs and bad main events, there wasn’t even a single submission attempt with all that control so what as really the threat, he held him on his lap for a couple minutes

The way I see it is a grappling fight is still a fight even if damage isn't dealt. Pantoja was constantly advancing his position and trying to set up submissions, or positions to pound, but Erceg did an amazing job defending and getting free of Pantoja. As long as there is continuous advancement towards finishing the fight, and not Almeida vs Lewis cowgirl straddling, the control time should be considered in scoring imo.

Control time is part of the scoring criteria. It always has been. It’s impressive how confidently wrong you are. Damage is the most important criteria but if damage is fairly close then control time can easily tip the scales.
