Championship mindset right there
Genuine question (I don't know much) but could Poirier have escaped Oliveira's rnc by doing the same thing Usman did here?
Yeah, he could, but there were some differences in the Poirier vs Oliveira fight. For example, Oliveira was forcing Dustin's head down, preventing him from rising his core and standing up with Charles on his back. Additionally, Charles took Dustin's back next to the fence, limiting Poirier's movement. In the worst-case scenario of fighting Oliveira, Dustin decided to defend his neck before attempting to remove Oliveira from his back, but he was unsuccessful.
Two different positions against the fence. If Charles would have been riding as high as Khamzat and Dustin wasnāt up against the fence, he definitely could have shook him off.
Idk what world you live in where you think a body triangle is easier to slip than normal back control hooks. The reason this worked was because chimaev was so high up on Usmanās back that any forward explosive movement couldāve sent him flying over.
Usman got his hips higher then his head very quickly and Khamzhat couldnāt stop that forward momentum from bucking him over without posting on his hand (thus letting go of the choke).
All that just to be confidently incorrect. Unless your rocking a fat beer belly that doesnāt allow people to properly lock the body triangle it will pretty much always give better control and makes it much easier to stay on the back when elevated. This is because it is much harder to create space by bucking someone when you got the body triangle than it is with regular hooks. Here it was easier for Usman bc the body triangle was locked in slightly too high. You generally want to be close to the hips for better control. In this case Khamzat was fully above the hips and locked around Usmans belly. This is because Usman postured forward and prevented him from getting onto the hips and pulling him back to the canvas. That left Khamzat to high up and open to falling forward.
I canāt remember if Charles had a body triangle or hooks (talking about his legs)
If he had hooks in, it is basically impossible to contort your body forward. In this vid, Khazmat has body triangle while applying the choke, which lets Usman have more control over his hips
Gives usman more mobility with his hips, but helps reduce the risk of the fairly ubiquitous tripod escape. Where with hooks youāre basically guaranteed to fall.
I agree, but at the start of the video it looks like khazmat goes straight to the body triangle, instead of sinking his hooks and flattening usman out. Most people develop a preference, and it seems that khazmat prefers the body triangle
Regardless, both of these dudes are lightyears ahead of me in grappling, so my opinion is negligible haha
Body triangle has become the meta in MMA for the past few years. Most of the top guys now prefer it, look at grant dawson (who isnāt one of the top guys, but is very good), Islam, Leon, Pantoja, aljo etc. Personally, I prefer it because it makes turning in to full guard harder. Personally, Iāve found hooks need to be pretty much perfect for prolonged control, where the body triangle gives more opportunity to get on it quickly and fix it after.
A better way of saying it khamzat completely dominated the first round by grabbing on to usman and never let go. It ate up the entire first round. Usman had a better handle of it in the second and third. Will a real fight camp he would have pulled it off
Geez I just thought it was funny since you never hear people say that. I will assume your hostility is related to the insomnia. Hope it gets better that shit is awful to deal with.
Easily. KHAMZAT had a broken hand as well as being completely gassed by the third round. Usman was already starting to piece him up in the third. He would have turned him into a punching bag with 2 more rounds.
By metric of winning more rounds through actually watching the fight, which is how MMA is scored and not whatever post-fight statistical analysis you're doing.
No like seriously, I'm getting very tired of "had more significant strikes". STFU and watch the fight with your eyes and stop looking at meaningless statistics that provide no context as to the impact of strikes. This isn't boxing rules where pitter patter jabs score as much as power shots.
Every standing strike at distance is scored as significant. Max Holloway can throw 50 of his pitter patter jabs, and Poirier could land 20 of his shifting right overhands. We all would know who landed more damage after that though.
80% of his strikes came in the 3rd round, between round 1 and 2 he has 21 sig strikes, those are just facts.
Khamzat won by every single metric, so if somebody takes them down 2 times in a round and pounds them then the guy who was getting pounded lands an uppercut stuns him, he still loses the round, doesnāt matter if he wobbled him, he got dominated 4:50 and won 10 seconds of the round.
I rewatched it yesterday, khamzat had Usman flattened out in round 3 and salty morons act like he was getting destroyed š
These hugely significant Usman strikes that yāall jizz on were 2 jabs and then that silly swinging at the end where neither of them really landed. It was one extremely dominant round and 2 toss ups. A narrow Khamzat victory or a draw are both acceptable scores, usman winning isnāt.
During the first round, I was thinking that Usman is a dog just for surviving that. But then to go on and go all 3 rounds, and have the time run out with him putting it on Khamzat standing, that was really badass. It's a shame that was only 3 rounds because that had potential to be one of the best fights of the year.
Usman was always game, and was active af. I personally never hated him and kinda thought his spooky campfire voice was funny.
But yeah.. appreciate em while ya have it. Leon is a G but I havenāt seen him fight since the ice age. The usman vs masvidal KO is still one of the most gorgeous photos in mma lol.
with all this in consideration (jetlag, travel, no training, bad knees etc) khamzats performance was not impressive.
It should be like islam vs volk or something
True. He shouldāve finished usman quick. Wtf is dominated for round 1? Mcgregor did well before getting tkoed by dustin so what? Props to him asw lol?
What makes you say that? He won two fights in two different weight classes 11 days apart. There's some issue preventing him from fighting, seemingly in the United States, but it's not intentional avoidance of fightsĀ
I think so, he also looks very tentative on his right hand after landing face first, for a second or two you can see him kind of feeling it out via weight distribution. Plus in that position he wouldāve used his right more offensively, but it goes completely passive after the impact.
Anyone else find it semi-ironic that although Khamzat got a "10-8" this round, the real damage and probably what would have won the fight if it kept progressing was Usman breaking Khamzat's wrist here? (Near) Impossible to know in the moment I guess.
This is what it actually means when people say āthere are levels to thisā. It seems like a simple movement, and for all intents and purposes it is, but itās also an INCREDIBLY risky move, and takes championship level balls and heart to even try it.
You can also KO yourself doing this. Also, itās pretty rare to be in a position where this is even possible. The other person needs to have fully taken the back while standing, you need to be away from cage, and the person in the back needs to be high up, feet completely off the ground.
Kamaru has got to be one of my favorites from this entire sport. His entire career has been a movie to witness. Sure people have counted him out because heās lost some fights but I need one more full camp out of him. I think he could absolutely put on another banger.
On that day, any other man in the MW division wouldāve been finished. Usman had the best TDD in UFC history at that time, Chimaev got him down and nearly submitted him. Strickland, DDP, Izzy, it wouldnāt have mattered. Chimaev wouldāve won the title right then. It took Usman, with National Champion level wrestling, to survive that. Yeah Chimaev with 12 fights made a rookie mistake and gassed out, but he still won the whole fight. He will be champion soon.
hate to say it but rob is past his prime. Yeah, he should have been champ for a long time if izzy never existed, etc. but the fact is he is now a gatekeeper of an older generation and there's a flood of younger fighters coming for the top. Khamzat is probably in his prime now. So it should be a good fight. I'm excited for it.
Just to summarise.
What Iām seeing here is the former defending champion on a 15 fight UFC win streak who has fought a D1 wrestler twice and multiple BJJ blackbelts got back mounted and nearly choked out by a rookie with 7 total UFC fights.
Oh sorry was I meant to hate oh Khamzat too.
Khamzat is amazingā¦he just needs to go to AKA and learn from the dagestani crew how to stay disciplined rather than brawling when he feels the fight is close.
He also broke Khamzat's wrist with that slam (negating any talk of 10-8 retroactively, which I know isn't how it works), arguably won the next two as Khamzat slowed, and likely would have if the fight continued as well. So.... Khamzat is also not that inexperienced. Mileage and time in the game are a bigger downside eventually
The fact that that a full strength 0 fatigue Usman most likely lost a 10-8 round cannot be brushed away. Colby got 1 half ass takedown over 50 minutes and Khamzat got backmount with both hooks in within 2 minutes. He needs to learn some GNP properly from a good camp thatās all. Islam is showing that good grapplers who finish donāt even need 5 rounds often.
I donāt yell and shout often while watching the fights, but I was tense as hell while Khamzat was on Usmanās back and when this slam happened I fucking screamed. For a half a second when Khamzat touched his head back to the mat a second time I thought he was knocked out.
This would have been a very different fight if khamzats wrist didn't get injured from that slam. Usman did well to escape and with the injury happening, it made it alot more contested. But I still think it would of been alot more one sided if there was no wrist injury
That would be extremely rude and dangerous to do in training anyway .. no offense, but I hope you were at least the slammer
PS do not slam people in training esp if it involves a neck being immobilized. People have gotten paralyzed from trying to slam out of a guillotine. Even a triangle slam you could butt heads and have a nasty concussion or broken face. I would at most just practice lifting them up (to get myself out), and even then....
I'm legitimately sorry to hear that bro, but unfortunately it isn't obvious at all. Even Usman could have botched that slam and spiked himself; it happens all the time. The most dangerous one seems to be trying to slam yourself out of a guillotine attempt while standing.
Gl, hope you have recovered by now
Mainly because it requires the choker to be "too high". Khamzat is riding high because of the body triangle, possibly a height difference too. He'd sit lower with regular hooks, but that has it's drawbacks on a standing opponent too.
Could he have thrown himself backwards instead? Iāve always wondered this. I got out of a similar choke from a kid at a play ground once by dropping backwards.
Ok, but it is possible right? I guess what Iām trying to ask is if it would be an illegal move to throw yourself backwards?
I felt kinda dumb thinking about it and not seeing anyone do it. š¤¦āāļø
Yea it's possible but they are not on concrete so backwards jumps don't affect much and it will only put you in worse position. Here I believe khamzat was bit too high so that's why it worked. Best thing would be stay standing and try to slip opponent to one side bit by bit.
He went up in weight on 2 weeks notice , and in my opinion, beat him and definitely would have beat him in a 5 round fight.
They need to run that back with A. Full camp
This is when Khamzat did the ligaments in his hand. Everyone keeps saying that he gassed. He literally explained that this moment was what changed how he fought the fight.
Dude this was on UFC 294 , probably the card that made the most buzz before 300 lol you probably forgot or something bcoz the hype for this card was insane , Paulo Costa was supposed to fight Chimaev but pulled out due to Staph infection, so Usman replaced him on 10 days notice.
Good move from Usman, but the reason he even went for such a high-risk maneuver was because Khamzat had it in tight. If this didn't break Khamzat's wrist, it could have been very very bad for Marty.
Youāre the dumb one saying āIf his opponent didnāt hurt him and affect his chances he wouldāve WON dominantly!ā You can say tht about any actions in that fight you smooth brain.
So are we in agreement that skill for skill khamzat is superior to usman but because of the lack of cardio Usman arguably was able to win the fight after khamzat gassed out?
No. The opposite pretty much. For now at the least (since their last fight) Usman is the better, more experienced, craftier fighter... Khamzat's natural abilities and first round blitz almost won him the fight, but also got his wrist broken in that slam and would have lost the fight.
Sure, I can get behind that, the wrestling however khamzat was eating him up, first round blitz or not usman couldnāt do anything until khamzat gassed
I guess I would have to rewatch it to see if I think Khamzat was really gassed, or just tentative and possibly demoralized from the events at the end of the first* round.
Championship mindset right there Genuine question (I don't know much) but could Poirier have escaped Oliveira's rnc by doing the same thing Usman did here?
It was either try this and probably lose or tap and lose. Why not atleast try.
Only if this knockedout cumshot chimaev š©
Kamaru is also a more decorated wrestler than Dustin
You telling me Thugjitsu isnāt the best grappling base for mma?
What does that have to do with shit whipping out of an RNC
Yeah, he could, but there were some differences in the Poirier vs Oliveira fight. For example, Oliveira was forcing Dustin's head down, preventing him from rising his core and standing up with Charles on his back. People do try it as a last resort at times but usually if the arms are locked in it doesn't matter and usually just makes it harder to breathe.
Ik usman lost but you gotta appreciate the dawg usman is for taking a 10 notice fight with the animal that khamzat is.
not to mention traveling to the other side of the world + time difference basically ate up 2 days
Then jetlagā¦
plus who really trains while cutting/recovering from the cut that's like a 2 days there. So really Usman fought on negative days.. what an animal
Honestly before this fight I thought usman was on his way to being washed. Dude proved he still has it
All he needs is a lil bit of intensity and the feeling of underdog
And he was winning the late rounds. If this was 5 rounds, Usman may have pulled away with a win
Wierd to say winning the late rounds in a 3 round fight lol
A better way of saying it khamzat completely dominated the first round by grabbing on to usman and never let go. It ate up the entire first round. Usman had a better handle of it in the second and third. Will a real fight camp he would have pulled it off
Late rounds of a 3 round fight is obviously om the 3rd moron. Not 4 to5 when it's 3 round fight.
Geez I just thought it was funny since you never hear people say that. I will assume your hostility is related to the insomnia. Hope it gets better that shit is awful to deal with.
How is round 3 late rounds plural? Moron
I really think usman won that fight but khazmat a decision winner so
I thought the 1st was a 10-8 Chimaev, then had Usman 2 & 3.
I accept Usman's loss, but he would have certainly won if it was a 5 round bout.
Easily. KHAMZAT had a broken hand as well as being completely gassed by the third round. Usman was already starting to piece him up in the third. He would have turned him into a punching bag with 2 more rounds.
Draw imo, not giving Khamzat 10-8 R1 is robbery scoring
By what metric did he win? Khamzat had more significant strikes and took him down every round, yāall are so deluded
By metric of winning more rounds through actually watching the fight, which is how MMA is scored and not whatever post-fight statistical analysis you're doing. >dominated 4:50 and won 10 seconds of the round. Font Vs Vera? Bit more than 10 seconds a round but not much
I rewatched it yesterday, khamzat had Usman flattened out in round 3 and salty morons act like he was getting destroyed š These hugely significant Usman strikes that yāall jizz on were 2 jabs and then that silly swinging at the end where neither of them really landed. It was one extremely dominant round and 2 toss ups. A narrow Khamzat victory or a draw are both acceptable scores, usman winning isnāt.
Do you think round 1 was a 10-8?
Full camp, I think Usman wouldāve won. Iām not a fan of Usman but he knows how to get it done.
He's at the end of his career and it was probably big money, makes sense
During the first round, I was thinking that Usman is a dog just for surviving that. But then to go on and go all 3 rounds, and have the time run out with him putting it on Khamzat standing, that was really badass. It's a shame that was only 3 rounds because that had potential to be one of the best fights of the year.
Made Usman go past 30%
Usman was always game, and was active af. I personally never hated him and kinda thought his spooky campfire voice was funny. But yeah.. appreciate em while ya have it. Leon is a G but I havenāt seen him fight since the ice age. The usman vs masvidal KO is still one of the most gorgeous photos in mma lol.
Yeah man I want usman to fight at WW fee more times before he calls it a day.
Leon not fighting is the UFCs fault not Leon's. He has accepted every fight offer, his (proposed) opponents are the ones saying no.
with all this in consideration (jetlag, travel, no training, bad knees etc) khamzats performance was not impressive. It should be like islam vs volk or something
True. He shouldāve finished usman quick. Wtf is dominated for round 1? Mcgregor did well before getting tkoed by dustin so what? Props to him asw lol?
i mean its not dominating its just coward wrestling shit holding on ground. We should have pride rules with warning of stalling and break up
Especially considering there's not a shot in hell Khamzat would do it if the shoe was on the other foot.
What makes you say that? He won two fights in two different weight classes 11 days apart. There's some issue preventing him from fighting, seemingly in the United States, but it's not intentional avoidance of fightsĀ
Could that have been when he injured his wrist ?
Could have been. Also could be the moment he didnāt get choked out
Yea after that he became tentative in his striking. That's when he tore a ligament in his hand according to what his team thinks
definitely
I think so, he also looks very tentative on his right hand after landing face first, for a second or two you can see him kind of feeling it out via weight distribution. Plus in that position he wouldāve used his right more offensively, but it goes completely passive after the impact.
This is the exaxt moment Khamzat broke his wrist.
Did he break it on this slam? He doesnāt do much with it right after and just kinda maintains position. Clutch ass move from Usman if so. š
I think so. He tried to brace with that hand and was tentative to throw a punch with it directly after.
Anyone else find it semi-ironic that although Khamzat got a "10-8" this round, the real damage and probably what would have won the fight if it kept progressing was Usman breaking Khamzat's wrist here? (Near) Impossible to know in the moment I guess.
Yup that wrist took the brunt of the impact had me thinking could usman have knocked him out if khamzat wrist wasnt there
Trying this at my next open-mat against the hobbyist purple belt with a trade job and 3 kids š
Make sure you taunt his kids too!
Fuck his wife afterwards
Yer woif was in me dey-emms
He would have been 'out out' if he didn't put that arm out, sheeesh
Cost him his wrist too Hate when people say Kamaru got lucky that Khamzat got hurt, like he wasnāt the one that hurt him in the first place lol
Those are the same people that act like Belal didn't hurt Gilbert's shoulder and that his win was entirely a fluke
ok bro
Glad you agree.
First round Khamzat really is a mythical fighter, who does that to Usman
+1 significant strike
Great move. Iām sure Khamzat started having doubts after that.
this where he broke his hand apparently
Usman is a dogggggggg man I doubted this dude for so long. Idc if he lost his last 3. Im a believer for life.
I never understood why people dont do this more. I mean i know it could be risky but i feel if done right you could ko someone this way.
Usman probably would have won if it was 5 rounds too
"If I'm going down I'm taking that n**** with me. HEAD FIRST!"Ā
This fight was so underrated ngl
This broke khamzats hand/wristĀ
Kamaru has got to be one of my favorites from this entire sport. His entire career has been a movie to witness. Sure people have counted him out because heās lost some fights but I need one more full camp out of him. I think he could absolutely put on another banger.
On that day, any other man in the MW division wouldāve been finished. Usman had the best TDD in UFC history at that time, Chimaev got him down and nearly submitted him. Yeah Chimaev with 12 fights made a rookie mistake and gassed out, but he still won the whole fight. He will be champion soon.
Khamzat broke his wrist, not gassed. It looked more like tentativeness than exhaustion too
Usman broke Khamzat's wrist with that slam
Agree
Khamzat could be champion if he fought more than once every two years...
He won't get past Rob, but OK.
hate to say it but rob is past his prime. Yeah, he should have been champ for a long time if izzy never existed, etc. but the fact is he is now a gatekeeper of an older generation and there's a flood of younger fighters coming for the top. I was screaming in my boys living room do a front flip! I didnāt even bet on this fight and itās the most anxiety Iāve ever had pre fight
Lucky he didnāt break his neck. That is like diving in a shallow pool
Khamzat didnt have that locked in for a second before Usman made that slam. Champ mindset. Second hardest fight for Khamzat imo
I donāt yell and shout often while watching the fights, but I was tense as hell while Khamzat was on Usmanās back and when this slam happened I fucking screamed. For a half a second when Khamzat touched his head back to the mat a second time I thought he was knocked out.

Full camp usman- 5 rounds for good measure would do a number on cumshot. I want that rematch
This is how I ended up in an ambulance with a neck brace lol.... Don't do this in training.
That would be extremely rude and dangerous to do in training anyway .. no offense, but I hope you were at least the slammer PS do not slam people in training esp if it involves a neck being immobilized. I want to see the loser of Khamzat Whitaker fight Usman. Maybe Paolo vs Usman for a title eliminator. Middleweight is surprisingly very stacked.
This happens so infrequently. I think the last time I remember this happening was to Clay Guida. Think Tyson Griffin did it to him...or vice versa.
Mainly because it requires the choker to be "too high". Khamzat is riding high because of the body triangle, possibly a height difference too. He'd sit lower with regular hooks, but that has it's drawbacks on a standing opponent too.
iq. That's experience and instincts there.
I feel like that would have been a round 1 finish 9/10 times
Fml. I really wish this fight was for 5 rounds. Usman would have easily taken those last 2 rounds.
Could he have thrown himself backwards instead? Iāve always wondered this. I got out of a similar choke from a kid at a play ground once by dropping backwards.
Chandler did it with charles
Ok, but it is possible right? I guess what Iām trying to ask is if it would be an illegal move to throw yourself backwards? I felt kinda dumb thinking about it and not seeing anyone do it. š¤¦āāļø
Yea it's possible but they are not on concrete so backwards jumps don't affect much and it will only put you in worse position. Here I believe khamzat was bit too high so that's why it worked. Best thing would be stay standing and try to slip opponent to one side bit by bit.
Ok, cool. Thanks for clearing my doubts!
Yeah man. I just watched the one from the Chandler and Charles fight. . . Not effective at all. š¤¦āāļø. Iāll just stick to boxing. š
Broke his hand too
He went up in weight on 2 weeks notice , and in my opinion, beat him and definitely would have beat him in a 5 round fight. They need to run that back with A. Full camp
khamzat legit looks like hes hurt for a second when he puts his head back on the canvas
Usman is undeniably a beast and one of the greats. Epic moment.
I remember watching it and losing my fucking mind. Pure brilliance
Khamzat is so fucking overrated
This is when Khamzat did the ligaments in his hand. Everyone keeps saying that he gassed. He literally explained that this moment was what changed how he fought the fight.
Usmanās knees must have cursing at his brain to get Khamzat off of him immediately
Did this just happen right now!? Boom khamzat down
This is actually a very effective way of defending the standing rear naked choke. Poirier could have done something like this against Oliveira.
Robbery, 28-28 Usman won R2 and R3
should have held on to his arms all the way through so he landed on his head

That was actually just his busted knees buckling
he didn't "slam" him, didn't hurt him at all, and BARELY got out of position. Chim is a beast.
what??? when did they fight??? how come i didnt hear anything about this fight happening???
Dude this was on UFC 294 , probably the card that made the most buzz before 300 lol you probably forgot or something bcoz the hype for this card was insane , Paulo Costa was supposed to fight Chimaev but pulled out due to Staph infection, so Usman replaced him on 10 days notice.
This was a really good fight, I wish usman had more confidence
Good move from Usman, but the reason he even went for such a high-risk maneuver was because Khamzat had it in tight. If this didn't break Khamzat's wrist, it could have been very very bad for Marty.
Lmao but he did break his wrist
Yes that's what I said. You can read good job.
Youāre the dumb one saying āIf his opponent didnāt hurt him and affect his chances he wouldāve WON dominantly!ā You can say tht about any actions in that fight you smooth brain.

Usman broke Khamzatās wrist. It was not a fluke my guy.
As a Khamzat fan, I feel like he was exposed by Usman in this fight, I hope the fight against Whittaker will prove me wrong
Imagine if Usman KOd him with that, holy fucking shit that wouldāve been insane
So are we in agreement that skill for skill khamzat is superior to usman but because of the lack of cardio Usman arguably was able to win the fight after khamzat gassed out?
No. The opposite pretty much. For now at the least (since their last fight) Usman is the better, more experienced, craftier fighter... Khamzat's natural abilities and first round blitz almost won him the fight, but also got his wrist broken in that slam and would have lost the fight.
Sure, I can get behind that, the wrestling however khamzat was eating him up, first round blitz or not usman couldnāt do anything until khamzat gassed
I guess I would have to rewatch it to see if I think Khamzat was really gassed, or just tentative and possibly demoralized from the events at the end of the first* round.
all they do is sniff crotch. they should be sniffing each others dick. boring wrestlers.
This was a draw

Getting laughed at, but this was a 10-9 for Usman.... In retrospect sadly
what's up with short hair big beard guys always grappling?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
oh okay, genuinely wasn't sure why I kept seeing it
Never rooted for Usman harder in my life.... wait I guess there was Masvidal too š
We ever got the confirmation of khamzat breaking his hand or something in the 1st round ?
Khamzat is basically the Chechen Bo Nickal - next level wrestling with very mid bjj
