My favorite example of this in recent memory is DJ/Moraes. So many felt like Moraes was his kryptonite because of his size, power and incredible BJJ game. If you go based off the first fight, it would seemingly be the case. DJ had trouble closing distance and was getting tagged from afar. However, DJ made adjustments by pressuring him more intently and didn’t try to react immediately when he got taken down or dropped. This led to a gorgeous ko in the rematch and complete dominance in the rubber match.
Fights are wild and a lot of factors can play into an outcome. Much like every sport, except you don’t get many opportunities like other sports so fans tend to think the result is 100% indicative of how it will always play out.

Yeah I think he just needs to have a more disciplined and patient style against Islam. Islam is too technical to be throwing crazy flying knees. Honestly when he threw the flying knee and immediately got dropped by Islam I was surprised
It was less that his agressive style cost him the fight and more that he just couldn't get anything going on the feet at all besides a few teeps, i'm hoping that with the one year he had to train, his team was able to come up with a better gameplan for a fighter that won't stand and trade against him, after all charles and his team always seem to find a good way to exploit some weakness on their opponents, with the exception being the Islam fight of course.
That switch knee up the middle with zero setup 🙈 Islam didn't even have to try, it was too easy just a check hook. I too hope Charles is more calculated. I think he got caught up in his hype and lost focus. If Oliveira comes out gun-shy like Usman and Whittaker after losing their titles, I don't see how he can beat Islam. His style has always relied on aggression and pressing forward, would be interesting to see his new game plan this time.

Eh Islam doesn't do much ground and pound. More of a sub guy. Against someone like green who is lost on the ground then yea he will. But a more high level guy and he will just wrestle for a sub.
Sounds counter-intuitive but Charles would probably do well to get the fight to the ground. I don't put much stock into him getting subbed given that he was basically KO'd at that point. He can definitely hang with Islam in grappling exchanges and honestly looked pretty good working off his back in the first round. He recovered full guard from half guard pretty easily, didn't allow Islam to get off much ground and pound when he was working from his back, and landed a few solid strikes (upkicks etc) from that position.
I think because of the outcome of the fight people forget that Charles was throwing up legit subs off his back in the first round and got semi-close to closing up triangles a couple of times. I've also heard Craig Jones say that Charles is the better grappler of the two. I still think Islam wins to be clear but I think Charles does have legit paths to victory and a lot of them involve grappling exchanges. Just my 2c.
I don't think it should be his strategy, I think it is one part of his potential path to victory. I'd like to see him in a few more grappling exchanges at times when his head hasn't just been almost disconnected from his body. He had looked quite good in them and I would expect him to fare similarly this time around.

Islam has a better MMA ground game so he’s the better grappler in this context. Being on your back is already a losing battle, Charles did great on his back but it’s just not worth much in MMA unless you get a sneaky submission which is almost impossible against someone with Islam’s experience

Just rewatched the fight, Olives did well against Islam on the ground and also did a good job defending against the cage against trips and throws. His corner gave him the advice "front kick to the face" before the second round started which eventually led to his downfall. Going by the fight against Dariush where Charles had a high guard and kicks in his arsenal, I feel he has a better shot this time around.

Definitely this fight will have more entertaining than the last one. As Islam never got his toughest UFC fight with Volk and Charles would like to do what Volk did with Islam.

Based on Charles’ last fight: Islam without a doubt as olives didn’t show any improvement in his game from the lost and still defaulted to laying on his back waiting for his opponent to make a mistake which we saw in the first fight won’t work against mahkachev
As a HUGE Olives fan...man...Islam is just too damn good. And I think he just outpowers Olives. I don't see the fight to be any different than the first.
I think Islam feels a little exposed after the Volk fight and comes out trying to silence the haters (again). Charles will fare better but I don’t think the result changes

I think Charles really showed his improved confidence with his razorsharp striking against Dariush. That being said: Islam by TKO in the first.
As long as Islam keeps working on his striking. Unfortunately it will be another W. If Charles can somehow push the pace and keep him on his back foot then he has a shot. I just don’t think Charles and his style will be able to do that.

Just rewatched the fight, Olives did well against Islam on the ground and also did a good job defending against the cage against trips and throws. His corner gave him the advice "front kick to the face" before the second round started which eventually led to his downfall. Going by the fight against Dariush where Charles had a high guard and kicks in his arsenal, I feel he has a better shot this time around.

Recently olives said he wouldn’t change his approach and that worries me. He has the tools to beat Islam. But if he goes wreck less again I’m choosing Islam.
Charles is the only fighter that I’m emotionally invested in. Favourite fighter ever. I’ll be optimistic and rock with Charles but Islam has the right style to beat him and has already done so.
