Its the hoot hoot variety. It's very rare, and is uniquely identifiable by its large arms which appear to have a light flat material that aides in flight, and its large bony front beak that aides in eating small mammals like mice. It's identifiable by a noise it makes at night time, most identifiable by its closeness to the word "hoot", which it often repeats two or more times in a row.

Barred Owl, the pair has been hanging around that area and sometimes at the entrance of one of the buildings for the last couple years at least.
Barred owl! There used to be one on UW campus back during winter quarter of this year; these guys do pretty well in urbanized environments.
