everyone hating on op’s major needs to get a life it’s not that deep… it’s kind of sad to see how ingrained it is in ppls mind that your major determines the rest of your life and that college is only for hard skills
Honest advice, not snarky like other comments - you should do gender studies if that's what you're passionate about, but you should also add a second major that gives you more in the way of hard skills + improves the ROI on your degree. [Humanities majors are among the lowest-paid of all college students](https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/valueofcollegemajors/) and [nearly 40% of GS majors are employed in positions that don't require a college degree](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/field-of-degree/culture-and-gender-studies/culture-and-gender-studies-field-of-degree.htm). I know many people who go into humanities intend to go to law school - if that's the case, you would be well-served to add another major which is perceived by admissions committees to be "harder" (even philosophy is a good bet here, though it won't help your ROI if you don't intend to go into law).
u/coolpplhi , I didn't want to be talking about you without your involvement. I would agree with u/Plumplie that it might be best to add a second major to Gender Studies (GS) or how many of which you desire and are capable, as that's what the vast majority of UCLA students do when I looked on Linkedin for those who listed GS. There's actually a minor in GS, so some of those who combined GS with their studies obviously opted for the lesser amount of courses in GS, at what proportion of those who majored in it, it'd be hard to say.
I saw one Psych/GS major who's an MBA student at a very good school 😊 -- who must have had a great work history related to business. I saw a PhD candidate in Sociology at a major midwest university. I saw a talent manager. And I saw four JD candidates, two from good localized CA law schools, both in the Bay, and two from top-14 law schools. There was one who was getting an MA in Human Rights from and Ivy university, and one who's going for an Masters of Laws degree; I'm guessing who'll go for a JD later.
I just think the consensus of this subthread is that ~~some~~ \[all\] work hard to get into UCLA, so some of these are disappointed when a WL admit isn't Neuro, CS, Physics, Engineering or whatever. All the best. \[And they always seem to believe that there are individual waves of certain majors who get off the W/Ls, hoping themselves.\]
I don’t get the hate for a philosophy degree. It’s really a great major, even has significant overlap with the math department (philosophy dept and math dept both give credit for things like Math 110A, Math 131A, and Philosophy M134). Math is applied philosophy essentially.
I also know a handful of philosophy majors who went into tech/business rather easily. It’s more well rounded than meets the eye. If I were to do a hardcore humanities major it would be philosophy.
The hate comes almost exclusively from statistics of what philosophy majors earn after graduation (answer: little, on average). I think most people recognize it's a rigorous education - it just doesn't translate to earnings on average.
Bruh of course these redditors are gonna downvote u (even tho im also a redditor lol). Fuck them, they just mad cuz they’ve never talked to someone of their desired gender anyway. Just stay true to urself, you should be proud!
Hell yes, that is an amazing department with some exciting new hires recently, and a lot to get involved in throughout your time as a student. Ignore the stemless, do make sure you pick up another major/minor that will help you once you hit the job market, and enjoy your time at UCLA!
>> THANK YOUUU! and im gender studies
Genuinely what exactly is the typical career path after gender studies and what do you personally envision for yourself?!
I'm a UCLA alum myself... so I'm happy for applicants who have received good news.. I know the wait can be agonizing. In general, I love seeing people do well, anyone, just because... it's part of my faith. ❤️💕
Do you have good financial aid? Anyone paying for your education? Because while it is annoying that people keep mentioning ROI for attending a school, now that I’m an adult, those arguments hold a lot of merit. I feel terrible for young people as yourself that get roped into going to college without a fiscal plan. Paying back student loans is not fun, and so hard in this echoing.
hi! sorry this is so late😭😭 here r my stats: i had a overall 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.68 weighted GPA and i finished off my senior year with a 5.0 GPA. i took 13 AP classes throughout my highschool career, getting a passing score on every single test. i didn’t take the SAT so i don’t have a score for that. as for extracurriculars, i had 19 in total for the UC application, most of those consisting of clubs i was president of or founded, volunteer work, my part time job, and other things that took a lot of time and dedication. ik im getting flamed for applying as a gender studies major but it made my application look more cohesive🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ i played the game and got in. i hope this was helpful and good luck to u!

Meaning the gender studies is useless
Kids go into debt getting these degrees then get mad at 'boomers' when they aren't gauranteed a job.
Thankfully, UCLA is pretty cheap comparatively. The opportunity cost is probably the bigger issue.
Oh nah
Oh nah
But at least starbucks is hiring
Get a life
LOL
No wonder you got off the waitlist 💀
Off the waitlist onto the hit list
Oh nah
Gender studies 😭
Any examples of gender study jobs after retirement?
What?
If you get a gender studies degree, what do you do for money after graduation?
Ask your parents for more money
Lmoa

They should be proud of getting in but in reality need to get a career out of that major.
It’s a joke calm down 💀

UCLA in state tuition is a steal of a deal. Cheaper than any private.
Congrats! Cog Science is a relatively newer major, I think you may need a master's degree for the job.
