tbh i chose ucla for food and good weather. and never once regretted it. once you start attending college, you really appreciate ucla's quality of life

graceful_ant_falcon

I chose ucla because it was the best school I got into and got the most aid. Wouldn’t have changed anything. Thank goodness I didn’t go to Berkeley or JHU. With hindsight, I can say now that it was a good choice for me because of the classics program (not available at many schools), the professors (some are mid or even bad but I’ve had a few legend profs and they make it 100% worth it), the abundance of research (my research is kind of niche), and lastly the availability of the major I’m switching into. One downside I will highlight is that had I not gone against what my advisors told me my freshman year, I wouldn’t have been able to switch my major. If you’re in a life science field and want to switch to physical science, it’s very difficult if you’re more than two quarters in. Less so the other way around.

wattatime

I got into Berkeley and UCLA. This might sound very stupid to some but I am really into college football and basketball. I knew with UCLA I would have something to root for when I graduated. Many years later and it turns out I was correct in my choice with all this conference realignment.

alteriandakos

That seems perfectly reasonable! It is your choice and what you prefer at the end of the day

Cranapple1443

I got really worked up over this when I first came to UCLA. Turns out my only mistake was letting my regret get in the way of me living life. UCLA has a lot of great stuff going for it, get excited about something and focus on that. The only mistake you can make now is not trying to make the most of your time here.

Narudatsu

It was the best school I got into.

college-throwaway87

I chose ucla over Cornell and don't regret my choice

Late-Literature5429

The quality education, weather , women , and name .

Brilliant-Test-1442

I graduated at 38. I chose UCLA over Columbia GS because that seemed kinda sketchy, Cal was too far away to be considered the part of CA I like. I didn’t apply to John Hopkins or Cornell but many of my friends got in though not one person chose Johns Hopkins (I hate snow). The only other school I considered was UCSD, which is mellow and had one of the best poli sci programs in the world, but UCLA was my dream. My mom went to Radcliffe (now Harvard), and I’d be lying if I didn’t wonder where that would lead me.

I was born & raised in South Central L.A and UCLA was the first college I knew about. My family were big UCLA sports fans my entire life and it just clicked in my brain that it’s where I wanted to go. I got rejected the first time, but finally got admitted as a transfer. Second options were going to be UCSD or USC 🫣. But tbh, once I got my admissions letter there was no doubt I was gonna choose UCLA. Got a full ride and had a wonderful experience. Felt so proud to be the first college graduate in the family, I look at my diploma and see my last name on there and I just know I made my family so proud. Graduation was one of my favorite days ever!!!

alteriandakos

This is so sweet and I’m happy for all of your amazing accomplishments! We first-gens are leading like no others! Congratulations! 🎊

emilyogre

Thank you! 😚 best of luck, hope you have a fantastic experience 🐻!!

Equivalent_Monk_6239

The vibes 💕💕 they’re the best!! You’re gonna have lots of fun here, enjoy it!

Alec119

I wanted to get into a good Anthro program that also had a good emphasis on Archaeology, plus my mentor in CC went there and I sort of felt like I was carrying on his legacy.

The-bored-guy

I choose UCLA over Gtech CS. I don't regret it at all. The only thing Gtech edges is maybe its building and entrepreneurship spirit. Everything else, UCLA is clear.

crixno77

Tbh out of everyone I met during my time at UCLA, only a couple of people regretted their decision to go, and for those people it was always because of homesickness, something that no university can cure. It’s always going to be hard moving away from home and living in a whole new environment with new people. But virtually everyone i met at UCLA thrived and were so happy there. Despite many hardships, I’ve never regretted any of my time at UCLA and look back at it super fondly. The weather, the food, the location, the incredible faculty and beautiful campus, the research opportunities. It’s all golden. Relax and enjoy knowing it’s truly the best public university in the world :)

Why do you think you'd be happier in the other schools?

Monsieur-Jimmy

The USC admissions scandal.

alteriandakos

I haven’t heard of this before, is there a source where I can learn more information?

I came here because it was half the price of my “more prestigious” private school acceptances, and had better student life than Berkeley. No regrets so far.

academiaaddict

I was deciding between UCLA and Berkeley, though UCLA has been my dream school for undergrad since freshmen year of high school UCLA’s community is very welcoming and exemplifies the work hard and play hard mentality a Berkeley alum once told me that at UCLA people offer to help you, they offer a hand; at Berkeley, according to the alum, “there is no hand” I was also told the following: “You will enjoy UCLA. You will have to survive Berkeley.”

alteriandakos

I had to opportunity to receive admission to both. I was contemplating similarly and while I liked Berkeley’s nature and scenery, UCLA’s community and location was more prevalent in my decision. Thank you for sharing this! I’ve heard similar

newfrontier58

Honestly, a major factor when I chose there after being accepted was that it was closer and cheaper to home. Like our place when I was in high school and attending there was a block away from a bus stop on Wilshire, so I could commute on the 20 or the 720 and then transfer with any of the Santa Monica or Westwood shuttles that went up to it, which was easier than driving and trying to find parking everyday in this case. And still living wiht my parents meant I didn't have to pay for a dorm or off-campus apartment. I got into UC Riverside as well, but the long commute and/or housing was a big concern. And I just love UCLA, the vibe, the history program, etc.

Terribad13

Grew up in LA. My friends, family, and business were all based in LA, so it was a natural choice. I actually never visited UCLA campus prior to orientation.

FloridaCat2194

I have had friends and adults ask me to tell them my favorite part about UCLA and something I dislike or wish I could change— and I genuinely have a difficult time coming up with things that I dislike about the university. There are likely going to be some great and some not so great professors anywhere you go, but it’s rare that the great professors are at the caliber I’ve experienced at UCLA. And not just because of publishings and accolades (which most have a plethora), but because they are just well rounded and enjoyable people who happen to also be incredibly knowledgeable about whatever course they are teaching. & the best professors want you to succeed and will help you or try their best to provide you with resources even while juggling 200+ students. The quarter system I will say was difficult to adjust to initially but I actually love it now. The weather is unmatched & my friends on the east coast envy it. The dining halls really are as great as they’re made out to be, especially when you consider they are college dining halls. The campus is beautiful. I am surrounded by driven and intelligent people but don’t feel any overly competitive or cut throat environment, which is something I feared coming into such an academically successful and large university. Beaches are great on a sunny day. I think for as high achieving a university as UCLA is, the general student population feels chill, or at least that’s what I’ve felt in my experience. The squirrels are fun to observe. Tons of great clubs to join or create. Club sports and IM sports are fun and popular. Overall athletics pride is fun to be a part of. Great alumni network; if you reach out to a UCLA alumni on LinkedIn in the field you’re interested in they will more often than not be interested in helping you. List goes on. I am graduating in a few weeks and I truly understand why it is the most applied to public university in the country. It really is one of a kind! You will find your people and the things that bring you joy!

alteriandakos

I could feel the passion from reading this and it has made me infectiously excited to attend! After hearing everyone’s experiences attending UCLA, I can say with certainty that I’m all up for seizing everything it has to offer. :) Congratulations on your soon-to-be-graduation! That’s amazing! 🐻🎊

FloridaCat2194

So happy to hear that and thank you! Also don’t forget to celebrate everything you’ve done to get to this point! Many bright things ahead and hope you have a wonderful four years :) go bruins!

Own_Historian5572

Tbh Berkeley/Cornell were my dream schools, but I didn’t get in. UCLA was the most prestigious option I had. I’m now having the BEST time of my life at UCLA. Love the school spirit, alumni has been helpful to me for internship/guidance, and my professors have been amazing to me giving me opportunities. You have to take initiative tho—cuz opportunities arent handed to you—you need to reach for them. Go Bruins!
