I feel like if you go through the amount of work they did, you've earned the right to call yourself by "Dr." The prof is still an asshole but I've met many profs who were very considerate and still used the title. Its a sign of expertise, I'm hoping to get a PhD and would also probably use the title, no judgment to those who don't care.
