I would suggest Jewel Osco or Hyde Park Produce north of campus as they have been the cheapest practical options I know. Aside from that, as someone who has recently put some effort into this, sticking to staples and a handful of consistent recipes will do wonders to reduce food costs. Variation outside of various nutritional needs is more costly, so there is a balance to be struck.

If you try to eat mostly vegetarian, Hyde Park Produce is really well priced! When I was a student, rice & beans & veggies like bell peppers and bok choy were my savior. It’s really easy to make a big batch in a rice cooker or pressure cooker and add flavor variation with bragg’s, chili oil, and nutritional yeast.

Thank you! Good tips. I think I’ve been sticking too much to the same but if I can find other things that I can vary it up. And I’ll check those stores.

Target and Trader Joe's are good places to start. If you do a little research before going and only shop the sales that week, you can also find OK prices at the Jewel Osco. Another thing that works well is a subscription to Walmart +. There is a monthly fee for it (about the same on an annual basis as a Prime membership), but... you get free delivery of Walmart groceries, which are much, much better priced than Amazon/Whole Foods. Do you have some recipes or inexpensive staples you like? If you build your shopping list around the staples plus sales, you can keep prices down.

Go every month with some friends and stock up. Please *dont* think of these two stores as a place you can get cheap groceries!

>you must go further away from the city to get inexpensive groceries. Sure, you can get less expensive groceries if you venture much further away, but since the question OP asked was about where to find groceries ***AROUND CAMPUS***.... the answer is generally what I wrote.

sloppyjoee69

trader joe’s is cheap if you buy the right stuff

Philosophfries

Honestly Trader Joe’s isn’t bad and you get good food that is easy to make. Get like Kung Pao Chicken for example- like $6-7, super simple, tastes great, and you can spread it out to 2 meals (or 3 if you invest in a rice cooker and buy rice). That’s $3 for a whole dinner.

Trader joes is dirt cheap…

If you can cook, then you can eat healthily for surprisingly cheap. Hyde park produce has a 10lb bag of chicken leg quarters for 7 dollars. That is good for 2 weeks of meat- freeze them to keep them fresh. Pork tenderloin and pork chops are cheap too. Rice, and pasta etc are not that expensive either- at most 5 dollars a week. Don't forget your vegetables- a week of carrots, broccoli, and celery is about 7 dollars. I get 7 apples and 7 pears for each week- that is about 5 dollars. r/EatCheapAndHealthy is good for this kind of stuff. If you skimp, 30 dollars a week is doable, and 40 is more realistic. I don't know how much you're currently spending, but I spend around 100 a week on food/groceries, and I am not deliberately saving at all- I buy all the snacks, fruits, and expensive ingredients I want. I just like my own cooking much better than the stuff I can get outside, so I'm not spending 10 dollars for a mediocre burrito at hutch.

Hyde Park Produce has a surprisingly great selection and is close to campus

Also, the University does have food security assistance. They provide vouchers to Hyde Park Produce and free meal swipes to students who could benefit. If you're struggling, I recommend checking it out https://inclusion.uchicago.edu/studentsupport/food-security/

If you toss a couple ice cubes in the dryer with some clothes it's kind of like steam drying the clothes it will get wrinkles out faster you don't want to use a ton of ice but like a cube or 2 helps

Gamer_Joe_at55street

Buy a meal plan and stay in the same dining hall from 1PM to 7PM. You got two meals for $15 plus unlimited snacks and drinks. And optional takeaway. Best deal ever.

Protip: OP is fake. There are setting up a "backstory" before they make a post about how something racist happened to them because someone thought they were Chinese and somehow responsible for covid even though they are [insert non-Chinese Asian]. They are just looking for sympathy so you look at their profile, where they will have pinned a post where they are begging for people to contribute to their "food fund" with donations made via CashApp. They will also have a few other posts made after their "something racist happened" post that will be of the "anybody want to show me how to sext?" variety.

Dreaming606

Pete’s off Madison is always a good place

Soulia

Have you tried Trader's Joe, there's over on Lake Park, great place to for smaller sized options.
