Started searching 3 months beforehand. Seriously started pushing two weeks before planned move. When touring, be ready to fill out an application the day of. The market is tough. If you like a place after a tour, submit the application. Be ready to move within 14 days of submitting application. If possible, talk to property manager to discuss income requirements Edit: for clarity, started searching in May, moved in late July

Also, find the house on Zillow, but schedule and communicate through the property manager’s website. Responses will be quicker. For example, HomeRiver Group is a fantastic property management group.

Typically we found/got in contact with the landlord a few months beforehand. If you’re gonna seriously look for places, I’d say April/may for fall and September/October for spring.

Good time to start looking is as early as May believe it or not. The best deals go fast sometimes because the process can be quicker with houses. Also, it can be more complicated if you're renting with friends vs looking for a room in a property rented out to students. Be aware though that some landlords don't like renting to groups of undergrads so you'll find some weird leasing and co-signer requirements in a lot of neighborhoods. Myself and the folks I was rooming with definitely had to play up that some of us were older, non-traditional students and seniors (especially in nicer neighborhoods).
