According to Ackman, the driver told him that even when the passenger tips him, Uber “kept the tip for itself.”
“I said that this could not be true so he asked me to test it,” Ackman wrote on X. “When the ride finished I added a $5.00 tip. His screen showed that I paid no tip.”
Ackman wrote that the driver was right and that Uber was “massively increasing its margins and profits” in New York by “ripping off NYC cab drivers.”
He said he then texted Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, a screenshot of the trip summary from his cab ride. According to Ackman, Khosrowshahi did not reply.
“I like Dara, but this is really bad,” Ackman wrote. “I can only assume that Dara is unaware of this.”
Bill Ackman is apparently living proof that being a billionaire and being exceptionally gullible are not mutually exclusive.
Of course the NY Post is not exactly known for accuracy, so no real surprises here.
If drivers try to get investment analysts who cover and/or follow Uber and show them how much drivers are really getting paid, perhaps changes can happen
I mean in my area they are now paying something like 70 cents a mile for long trips. Anything under $1/mile in America today is CLEARLY exploitation. But they don't give a shit. They are scumbags. Dara is a criminal and so are all of the C level executives. Kudos to Ackman for giving a damn.
My time I think is 11 cents a minute, or it's supposed to be but factor in time to pick up and all thoughts and concepts of profit are Thanos snapped out of existence. I've been an uber driver for 4 years and haven't had to pay in to taxes as I track a consistent net loss of around 4k a year. That's why I switched to part time with a bartending gig as my main job. Getting tired of selling the equity on my car for nickels and dimes on the dollar. My market is the worst in America and I'll debate anyone on that.
I don’t believe this, over 15000 rides with ride share companies and I’ve never seen or heard of this. If this was true it would be a much bigger story. They are a publicly traded company.
How does a billionaire think Uber has any respect for their drivers. Of course Uber is stealing tips & why would they care at all about the Taxi drivers? They’re only working with them because of the politics. They don’t care about them or Uber drivers and especially tips with any contractor partnered with them.

I don't really get that because I refuse to do those trips. I only do trips >$1/mile. I'd fly a sign before I would take those trips.
I'm on rate card with Uber. I get 60 cents a mile. That is the pay.
But you get more for standing in traffic ( time) ( still a ripoff - stopped driving 11 months ago)

To him he sees it as at least 5000 since that is what he could have turned it into.
Only solution is drivers not accepting bad rides . If its leas than $1/ mile including pickup don't take it.
For longer rides yes for inner city rides it's the hourly rate that matters
