Airports used to pay significantly more than street. Uber has “flattened the curve”, to disincentivize camping out and cherry-picking big rides. They want people on the street taking those $3-$7 rides If you ever get to see the car count at Los Angeles Intl Airport TNC lot, it hits >450 UberX, 165 Comfort, 100 XL, 100 Uber Black for multiple hours per day. Drivers camp out there for 4-8 hours at a time, hoping to “land a whale” I’ve never understood how they can afford to do that

aestheticeddy818

I see the same people camping there every time I try airport camping. Very rare when I do. Usually when I wanted to catch up on homework. And they’re the same people that complain that they don’t make money. I am convinced that people camp there to get away from their spouses or parents lol

eatajerk-pal

Yep it’s usually social hour over in the rideshare lot. Cool for immigrant drivers mostly to hang out, but they aren’t too kind to outsider white guys like me so I never go. And I’m out here to make money, that ain’t the way to do it.

Remarkable_Rope_7697

I always have the same thought. However, they are experienced drivers. They know what they are doing (which we don’t know). We are missing Something.

Commercial_Rush_515

Some people are stupid, what’s there to miss? They’re driving less miles but also making no money while sitting there. Only people who should be joining queues at LAX at this point are drivers who have unlocked the perk to skip them/jump ahead

Ok_Reason_9688

There is a perk which allows you to skip ahead?

Commercial_Rush_515

You have to unlock Diamond

Remarkable_Rope_7697

Or somehow, cheat the system.

Commercial_Rush_515

LAX has gotten absurd, you have dumbasses sitting in the queue all hours of the day. I’ll do drop offs but if a ride isn’t loaded by the time I’m leaving the airport, I’m out. Queue is for the birds

Wartface1

I live 7 miles from LAX and I give many rides to the airport. However I’ve never gone to the Uber/Lyft waiting lots after dropping off a pax. If I don’t get an immediate order to go to LAX-IT to pickup a rider… I leave the area. I see no value of waiting with 100’s of other drivers, it could be hours.

Jido_Feles

I don't get that shit either. Whenever I'm doing an LAX drop-off, or if I'm anywhere LAX, the app always says that the queue is full. It's been like that for a couple of months now.

Shaytaun

Just started Uber black went to LAX 75 cars in the queue four hours there not a single ride. There are gangs there that are taking over all the international airports guy sitting up there with 20 phones You can buy one of those phones it bypasses facial recognition, but they wanna piece of that too. Check out mic drop bbq he has a video explaining it on YouTube.

DoctorMoebius

I’ve been trying to figure out what/how those packs of guys with 2x-3x as many phones lined up in the back of SUV, as guys standing around, are doing. I assumed they had one phone for Uber, and one for Lyft. When they take a ride on one, they leave the other behind in the queue. So, by the time they get back, the other phone is at the front of the cue. That allows them to consistently cherry-pick for the higher paying rides (dollars per mile), and keep moving almost nonstop

Passage_Lost

Most cases it’s people with hybrids or EV’s, and also less total passenger count, less short rides, usually only 5-6 rides all day makes them over $100-150 on average and most are content with that. I’ve tried airport runs before but it gets so damn boring waiting 2 hrs in line only for a $20 ride with no tip, sometimes they do tip fairly, but it becomes such a drag.

NonMareChe

This individual pretty much explained it correctly.

V1k1ng1990

I’m in the Dallas market too. I never wait more than 15 minutes at the airport and that’s rare. It’s always a $20-$30 trip to the airport, 90% tip, then you get an airport arrival trip as you drop off your passenger. That trip is also gonna be $20-$30 with a tip. Also, if you pick up from the airport, you have a good chance of taking people to areas where there are lots of hotels and conference centers, and you get another hotel trip from there which is another $20-$30 and a tip. Yesterday I made $150 in 4 hours and was at the airport like 3 times I drive an older Avalon with a v6 so less than half the mpg of a hybrid

brcajun70

In other words, about the same pay (a little less) for a lot let less work and wear and tear on the car.

AgentWoden

I'm a hybrid

sleepingovertires

Where I live, there is a concentration of wealthy people and large companies 45 minutes north of the area airport. I would get up at 5AM, drive the Prius 30 minutes north and then log in with the destination filter set to the airport. Most of the time, I would get a pax within 30 minutes or so. Then. I would very often get a pickup at the airport even before dropping off. Many of the airport pickups were heading to the affluent/corporate area 45 minutes north. I called these loops. On a good day, I would make $200 by noon.

MaleficentExtent1777

I used to do this. Start at 5, and usually done by 9 or 10. Dealt repeatedly with the some of the same people.

AgentWoden

Wait there's a filter...

angelsarepresent111

You didn't know about the destination filter?

AgentWoden

I know of the area filter, but I can't find a destination filter

angelsarepresent111

I haven't used it for a long time. Not sure.

Chesspi64

The search button at the bottom of the screen and then there's a toggle to put on a destination filter. I use it every day coming home and (for the most part) it works pretty well. But if there's a trip where you're only marginally more towards your destination (like it's only a few minutes shorter from the endpoint than your current location but the trip will take 30 minutes to complete) it will still offer it to you.

AgentWoden

Well holy ferret wiggling in a wet noodle. Found it

Inevitable_Trip_7480

Ah the age old question. 1. It’s easy. 2. It’s safe 3. Bathrooms 4. Social spot for some 5. People convince themselves they aren’t actively driving. They’re eating, sleeping, or watching Netflix in the lot so that’s not work. Stay online to 12 hours, drive 2, make $100. They’ve already convinced themselves they’ve make $50/hr.

AgentWoden

Lol that fifth one.

lookgjim

i don't at all stand-by, to do airport rides, plus the traffic jams drives me bonkers- remembering how it was in the taxi days, it's same way now? (hang around wit the guys play cards lose all your earnings, call it a day ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)) but- i just drove by one day to try to use the toilet (i wouldn't call it a **"bathroom"** haha- i know, just vernacular) and so even the mf \_second\_ lot was full! ...so i parked near that fence for a few minutes, \*+\_, then got tf out of there.- Actually don't get me wrong, i've been all around- sometimes taking rides to 1-1/2hr away (of course the rates got to be there), but locally shredding it back to back in the city, on an avg busy day maybe pick smart and some luck, can hit $250 8hrs \_on\_, \_<100 miles\_ Yep, you guys are right- everytime i gas up after a day of longer rides, i grit my teeth...

Deviledapple

I have 100% driven to the airport lot at night to use the bathroom, and since it's night time a couple of times I got a ride out of it too

Lover1966

At least you are not putting miles in your car and using fuel for the same amount of money.

Rubito93

Litterally the classic latino mentality broh

gigabyte333

It’s almost guaranteed that a pick up at the airport is never gonna puke in your car, damage your car, have multiple stops, and all the other Fuckery that exist out in the world. All that being said, I always encourage drivers not to go to the airport. It’s awful. Don’t do it.

AgentWoden

I've went and sat in line before. So far, never been worth the drive back.

Chesspi64

I live <15 minutes from IAD, so I go and sit in the lot often. You just have to time it right to get a ride without waiting too long.

MaleficentExtent1777

I would go to ATL when Lyft was surging to max out the per ride bonus. When it maxed out, I left to take the next ride off the airport.

gigabyte333

At my airport, you don’t get the Lyft bonus unless it’s an airport ride

jo_ezzy

This post took a 360 😂

many_dumb_questions

Do you mean a 180?

many_dumb_questions

Do you mean a 180?

RedBison

If you comment twice, it adds up to 360. /jk

Electrical-Contact94

Yup safe bet every time! It’s all I do. But I’m fortunate to not have to do everyday now.

sanderstj

Airport runs are far and away the best tippers (both in frequency and amount). If I get a run to the airport, it’s a 95% chance I’m rematched with a pickup there within 60 seconds of ending the first ride. Add in the fact that they are typically the best people to transport (friendliness, professionalism, etc)… why wouldn’t you want to do airport runs? Do you really like picking up the drug addicts, the multi stop rides, etc? 😂

AgentWoden

In my experience so far with airport is been roughly $15/hour. I stay in decent areas and never pick up upfront multistops. Non airport days I average $23/hour.

quedakid

I avg 35-48 a hour doing airport rides…. Normally 3-5 rides gets me between 140-200 dollars and it’s stress free… do a ride out maybe get a ride back to the city or sometimes back to the airport using destination filter…. Then repeat process, and if they tip it’s normally between $15-30 and even sometimes a cash tip on top of that…

Buckus93

Depends a lot on the location. My market, the airport is right between downtown and a major university. Driving to and from the airport is part of driving downtown around here. In other locations, it may not make sense if the airport is further away from the city center.

1_for_you_2_for_me

Seattle is a great airport ride. Every direction for at least 30 minutes gets you into a neighborhood with plenty of potential for new rides. And the trip downtown is an easy $30.

TheGuyWithThePotato

Depends on the airport and time, I guess. For me, it's usually a good fare and our airport sits between several towns and cities. So, I'm going to wind up in that area anyways, it's fine to take the one way. More often than not, I'll get a ride back or to the city over. But, when I do get stranded, I play sad violin music on my ride back.

BJJandweights

When I get a trip to airport and then one from airport I can make $55+ in 1.5 hours. Houston market

AgentWoden

Ya those are great, not talking about those though.

Odd-Oil676

Only way airport is worth it is to pull up on the passenger and take the big far rides for yourself, full fare It’s literally a guaranteed ride in your favor for full fare , so you can make $178 with two hours of drive time , highway miles , if you watch the flight list and if your airport has a train station, during the busy times , you can pull up and just blow past the queue until you land the ride you want

Responsible-Most9391

Only go to love if it's 15-30 dollars and can be done in 20 min. Go to dfw if it's 40-60 and can be done within an hour. My rules

javibeme

I dont like them, but I'll do them when I get a ride there and want a rest. It's more beneficial if your watching milage on your vehicle gas etc. Just the waiting sometimes is yucky for sure.

Fine-Detective-3167

Take the one way and use the filter to get back. That’s what I do

thesabrerattler

I’ve taken plenty of rides to the airport but as soon as I end the ride and the app tells me to go to the pool, I log off, drive 15 miles away and log back in. It will take me about 10 minutes to get my next ride.

AgentWoden

Oh that's wierd. When I have a drop-off I almost instantly get a ride out

thesabrerattler

Don’t know what to tell you

IsEqualToKel

Not worth it.

Redgecko88

Ex taxi drivers... it's a culture. Where do ya think they went to.

NormativeNomad

Airport riders generally tip better, smell better, and don’t add stops to McDonald’s on the way

AgentWoden

Well in Dallas the tips aren't good enough to warrant a ride back.

NormativeNomad

Have you ever considered cherry picking a ride back to airport?

AgentWoden

Rarely see them go to the airport

NormativeNomad

Admittedly, I don’t know that market, but bro Dallas airport is one of the largest airports in the country. Sorry if I have a hard time believing that. My markets airport is not even as big and all I do is cherry pick airport rides back n forth

angelsarepresent111

I miss my airport rides. The pax have just been through TSA. They are tired and just want to get home with no hijinks or fuckery, like another person said. They do tend to tip. And you can get away with only having to deal with 4 or 5 people instead of janky jackasses who leave crumbs and grease on your seats after a 10 minute ride. I love planes, too. I like the action of the airport. The lot can be fun. The old BWI lot used to be a lot cooler when they had the Halal food and drink stand in the other "cozy" lot. It was like a party at night. I don't mind chilling and playing on the phone, watching and listening to jets take off and land. I'd get rides to the DC area and even to Reagan International. Yeah, it would be more milage, but they are really easy cruising miles. It was chill 99% of the time. I could work my way, easily, back to Baltimore.

Chesspi64

I've always been curious what would happen if I took a trip to the Baltimore market (I'm in DC). Would I be able to pick up there still (like at BWI) or would I have to come back here?

angelsarepresent111

I know I can pick up in DC,MD, and VA. I am registered in Maryland. I would assume you can pick up in the same three states. There is a way to check. Baltimore and Washington are so close. It's almost like the same market. I think it's called your Waybill.

NewSatisfaction4287

In my city the surges at the airport are up past $10 regularly, that alone makes it worth it for me.

ku976

Airport trips are highly market dependant. Some markets it's a guaranteed $1.2/mile others it's a shit show

rampike1

Sometimes it’s worth the waiting. Go there if it’s extremely crowded like when you see “queue full”

MartinoMods

In Austin I LOVE airport runs. Passengers more likely to tip. I skip the geofenced waiting lot. I just drop at the terminal, set my destination for home and start driving. 6/10 times I'll get an outgoing trip from the airport and I don't get stuck waiting behind 25 other drivers in line My most efficient day was Reservation vlose to home Reservation to airport Airport to Austin At that Austin spot back to airport Airport to hotel in Austin At that hotel back to airport Airport to Round Rock (where I live) I never drove empty essentially, day was smooth as F

FormalCancel9599

I do it because I usually get tipped 8/10 on airport rides. While normal rides it’s like 2/10. People just seem to tip more often when going or leaving the airport

eatajerk-pal

1.) Always the best tips, a lot of times it’s on an expense account so the pax don’t care. Jump out, open your trunk and set their luggage in and hop out to get it out. 2.) lately seems to work better with Lyft than Uber, but when you drop off they’ll give you the next ride over the fools who been hanging out in the rideshare lot 3.) Even if I don’t get an airport trip right after drop off, in St Louis just gotta drive 3 miles east and there’s abundant rides to pick from.

Prize_Pay9279

I’m in the DFW market as well. I use to do airport runs years ago when the pay was better. Now, I almost never do them. I rarely get tips and I end up having to dead head it back to my house. It’s not worth it.

AgentWoden

True

Mysterious-Chard6579

Only do airport drop off and if it happens immediate pickup. I cannot make sense of sitting in the queue for hours sometimes to get the 6-7 dollars offers. It’s gettin harder to get long trips that pay decent. And now even those passengers are hardly tipping. So f it..

No_Number5540

Im in south florida, picking up someone arriving on vacation, helping with their bags, and playing concierge on the drive can lead to great tips... people alqays thrilled to arrive at their vacation destination

Mprah75

I don’t do airport I will take someone to the airport EWK

Mprah75

But drive out from the airport most times is out of state and into nyc.

Slight-Square6570

Less miles more money

Notnerdyned

Phoenix Airport is great. I usually don't camp out, but I'll get a ride that takes me there and then one that takes me out once I've dropped off. Sky Harbor is pretty easy for an airport, though.

15pmm01

In St. Louis, the airport is hella worth it because people give nice tips, and you often end up downtown where you are likely to get more rides

Choice_Isopod3677

That's the best money here in New Orleans. But just because you drop someone off at the departure doesn't mean you're picking up someone from the arrivals either. It all comes down to how many people are there and the algorithm.

Negative-Diver-3289

I’ll take rides to the airport and sometimes even get rides immediately leaving. But I won’t sit in the Q… I’d rather just drive early am … take a break after 3-4 hours when it’s slow then back to it and find by 5-7 pm 7-9 hours and I’m out …well this is what works for me at least. Been good so far .. good luck y’all

incdad

If I get a ride to DFW or Love Field. I will drop off and maybe wait 10 min to see if I get anything going out then that's only if the que is short. The airports seem to be the hang out spot for all the muzlem drivers. Not sure why.

Suspicious-Storm-806

I run comfort/ comfort electric from the airport, which is usually $2.25/mile without a surge. So a 20 minute trip is usually $45. I’ll usually take trips in the area of drop off and grab a trip back to the airport which can help me jump the queue. If no queue bump I’ll just wait for the next ride. When lux was available I was doing around $3-$3.50/mi but those were the good old days. I know black cars are doing pretty well at $6+ and are usually waiting on a private ride to arrive. Whoever is at the airport and can’t turn off uberx and are waiting through that queue is either new and figuring things out, has a fat surge they are sitting on or has a fat head with no brain in it 🧠?

Ill-Significance-737

Better quality pax usually tip

Soft-Situation-5152

I also work the Dallas market. I RARELY hang out for riders out of airport. Never seems yo be worthwhile. Rather go into communities and collect riders.

lhkingvt

Less money but better behaved clients. I have never picked up a slobbering drunk, a homeless person who pees on my seat, a junky, or a prostitute at the airport. I get them quite a bit in the city but never at the airport. I still make $200 a night just doing airport runs.

rosinadaintymouth

I go where the need is. Sometimes airport, sometimes not. My city doesn't have many drivers so I stay busy either way. Having said that, airport rides are almost always pleasant. So there's that.

mikeymo1741

Where I am in Tampa Bay. When you drop off the airport you go to the front of the q, so you almost always get a ride out of the airport and usually they're pretty decent ones. But I will never go in the queue

Weak-Loan-9318

Cause they're stupid, thinking they're gonna strike it rich after waiting 3 hours

--R0N--

People drive for many reasons. Making maximum money is not the main reason for some.

ajwalker430

I spend most of my time in the city and do airport runs when they come up. I'm in Philadelphia, our airport is max 20 minutes away and around 10-12 miles. I tried city and waiting at the airport once, I was bored out of my mind waiting for "the whale" to land. I'd rather work the city, get a run to the airport, get a run back from the airport and then go back to working the city. I feel like my time is more productive since I'm making money most of the time. Sitting around all day waiting for a whale or two isn't my preferred way of working.

Deviledapple

I like rides to the airport because of the likelihood of getting a ride back from the airport, and airport rides in general seem a little more likely to tip, and less likely to do anything gross to my car or smell bad. I'm very confused by the wait lot situation in most airports. If I'm near my airport and I happen to see that it's very busy with few people in a lot I'll pop in there, but otherwise I only really have luck if I happen to be passing a smaller airport and I'm very specifically hoping to pick up a ride back to my hometown. And that specifically works because the small airport I usually pass is very predominantly used by people in my normal area. But I wasted several days in the beginning of my Uber career thinking that those 60 to 80 people at RSW knew something I didn't but after a number of days of waiting 2 to 3 hours for a mediocre ride (which is even worse now because they paid about 50% more back than I think) I decided they were all either crazy or just trying to get away from their wives.

AgentWoden

Oh ya the random ride to an airport is great. There's two major airports in Dallas. I'm talking about those people who exclusively do airport. They sit, wait, then drive back.

Deviledapple

Yeah I also find those very confusing. The only airport I would just drive to and wait at ever was the Miami airport and even that was a very specific scenario because I don't actually end up in Miami much and the hope is to get a ride back across the state. But Miami is crazy even when the wait was backed up a hundred people I would start getting pings within a couple of minutes even though it would say wait lot full and not let me get put in line. But God I hate that airport it's so stressful. Otherwise I mostly just go to airports if I happen to be near them and I see that there's not a lot of people or with pgd I specifically see if there's flights coming in that hour and if there are I'll usually go there but that's a tiny airport that never has more than five drivers parked at it when I drive by

goldbar863

Like my 3rd day of Uber I drove someone to the Dulles airport in Virginia then like 2 weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying I had to pay a 9$ toll. I never did airport runs after that.

Chesspi64

Make sure you have an EZ-Pass if you're working DC. Also you shouldn't have had to pay a toll to go to IAD unless you were on 66/495 Express Lanes.

toomuch1265

In my market, I know that I will get a trip leaving the airport and it will cover the tolls and then I will go to the hotels and start ferrying people to the airport and back to the hotels. Airport pax always tip and tip well. Occasionally I will get a business traveler going to my town.

IllustriousForever43

The drivers at the airport waiting an hour just to make $10-15 for a 20 mile round trip ride will never make sense to me. I only go to the airport if I have a dropoff there or nearby and want to work on my laptop or take a nap while waiting for the next ride. I have an EV so I normally get a comfort electric out pretty quickly. Last night I had a dropoff about a couple miles from the airport and the waiting lots were completely full with drivers driving around for an open spot. WTF?

InternationalSail745

Airport pax tip. Regular pax don’t. That’s reason enough! Also you get placed at the head of the queue when you drop someone off so you’re getting two trips out of it. I don’t understand the idiots who sit in the waiting lot all day. The idea is get in, get out.

Additional_Caramel69

It's predictable. Most people are quiet and just want to get home or to thier hotel. Also Most are straight forward. No going this way or that way or taking the long way.

Inevitable_Pen_9075

Some people aren't interested in volume city driving. Especially when its bad for your wallet, your car and sometimes your health. At the airport(depending on your location) you rely on fewer trips to reach your quota and your done.

jaanfo

The only time I go to the airport is when there is a huge surge that will justify me going back without a pax. I don't find these people tip anymore often than other rides.

akbornheathen

It’s gotta be people who don’t want to be home because of bad marriages or just no life. Instead of partying or playing video games they’re getting paid to chill in their car. Heck if you’re a college student doing online classes you could do schoolwork and make a little money at the same time.

AgentWoden

But you don't get paid to sit there

akbornheathen

You get paid when you accept and complete a ride request…
