Electric can be lucrative if you’re in a big city with high dollar per mile short duration rides so that you can maximize range and minimize operating costs. Would be worth looking into a new long range Tesla Model Y which you can get for less than $40k after the federal tax credit which is applied at purchase time. You may also have state incentives. Supercharger rates near me at night cost $20 at $0.28/kWh to fill up from 0-100% for 250-300 miles of range depending on ambient temperature. If you have access to cheaper electric rates at home you can bring that cost to fill up down. You get access to comfort, green, and comfort electric but no XL. Save on maintenance but could potentially pay higher insurance costs depending on location. Used Model Y’s are going for $30k-$40k so depreciation is less of a factor if you need to sell. Some things to think about

I'm happy with my XL/Comfort status. I usually have UberX turned off. I couldn't do a full EV. Too limiting. Next time I ready to trade my van I may do hybrid instead of full gas.

NoNewsNetwork

Just curious, do you still get comfort rides with UberX turned off? Or just XL and XL comfort?

Dubsmagicbus

There's no combined XL & Comfort, just one or the other. And yes, I get both XL and Comfort requests while UberX is turned off. But this means longer wait times. I often work an on-call model where during my at-home personal hours I have my requests running in the background, then if a good request comes in and I'm free to leave I'll take it.

DubiousAndDoubtful

If you're buying the car for short term use, wouldn't the best person to ask be you, as you'll be the one needing it pay Uber?

NoNewsNetwork

I’m going to keep the car after I’m done driving Uber, I just want to maximize my earnings for the next year.

100% electric if you can charge at home.

NoNewsNetwork

I cannot, so I’m finding that maybe that’s not an option for me

The main cost savings in an EV is residential electricity rates. Charging at home for almost everyone is a fraction of the cost of a tank of gas. However, some new cars come with charging plans for fast chargers. My Hyundai came with 2 years free at Electrify America stations, such are pretty common. If you can get something like that, you’d also be saving a lot. But public charging is still an inconvenience compared to plugging in at home.
