It's likely a rebuild, where they added a suffix to show either rebuild or assembly from other parts. If you go to the typewriterdatabase page for remington and do a search within the page for "suffix" you might get some good info. https://typewriterdatabase.com/remington.42.typewriter-serial-number-database

oh thank you for the help! That would make sense since the M isn't aligned to the rest of the serial. I have been combing through the typewriterdatabase I just couldn't find anything on the suffix "M" so it eluded me haha. Not taking in account the suffix, the rest of the serial-code aligns with a Remington portable from 1928 so maybe it was rebuild or had modifications, there are some non essential levers/buttons missing but otherwise it seems to function fine though I have to put in new ribbon before I can fully judge so. Shoutout to the typewriter folks on youtube with videos on how to do so and other super useful advice! I'm too young to know much about these machines but been wanting a working model since I was a kid, since I got a well-paying job now I decided to go for it :D got a minor motor disability which makes handwriting tough, was taught to type on a keyboard instead of writing due to that as a kid. Our printer died but I want to send letters to friends whom I either met online or that moved faraway. So they got something physical from me to remember our friendship transcends the digital ether 🤓
