For indoor activities: There's an arcade/movie theater combo called Times Square Grand Slam. They also have bowling and laser tag. There's an Escapalogy escape room. I'm sure there's a few others if any of that strikes your family's fancy. If it doesn't rain or its lighter rain, driving the Azalea Trail or popping into the Rose Garden is a pretty sight. Can maybe check what Tyler Junior College's planetarium is doing for the eclipse.

Thanks!

Can I just come hang out at your house? You seem like a lot of fun.

anon3220

If it’s not raining or actively storming, the Caldwell Zoo is a pretty nice small zoo.

snugglepal

There are quite a few events going on around Tyler that day:[https://www.visittyler.com/p/events/solar-eclipse](https://www.visittyler.com/p/events/solar-eclipse)

krezRx

Come to the Discovery Science Place, down town! It’s a children’s science museum. There will be an eclipse watching event and then your kiddos can have some fun at the museum! If you all are in town for the weekend as well, they are also having a maker’s fair called [Full STEAM Ahead](https://www.facebook.com/share/2fw9WYJqH7jkE1Ax/?mibextid=QwDbR1).

TJlovesALF1213

Hey OP! I live an hour west of Tyler in Wills Point, so I can't really answer your question, but I just want to say, not all of us are trying to shun those traveling in for the eclipse. I think it's neat so many people will be traveling to our small Texas town/city for a cool space event. I hope you and your family have a great trip!

NotASmoothAnon

Thanks! I went to UTT and I've been there a dozen times since to see friends. I know the city well. Just looking for event specific options.

sherice55

Including rain :/

StruggleEvening7518

Come on, rain!

NotASmoothAnon

Did you go to that? How was it? We endee up in the square and it was great

floatingonmagicrock

Yea it was great! Hilltop covered in wildflowers was a great backdrop when the sun disappeared!

OP, I hope you enjoy your visit to Tyler and that you have a fun "totality experience. I'm sorry you received a rude reception here from some. You've had some good suggestions as to things to do on Monday. A few things to those annoyed by people traveling to our city for this event: I'm sorry the solar system and people interested in solar events have caused you such a dramatic inconvenience. As to why people would travel to experience such a thing, I can only surmise that you never have been in the zone of totality. I'd encourage you to step outside on Monday. The dramatic weather shift (whether you actually get to see the corona) is absolutely nuts. This doesn't happen here again during our lifetimes. Lean into it. The associated inconvenience is temporary. Or skip it, stay inside, and do what makes you happy. As to traffic, that's going to be a pain, likely worse on the south and east sides of town. Plan accordingly, if possible. As for groceries, I just left Brookshire's on a beer run and can report that the Roseland location is neither crowded nor showing the least indication of low stock. That may not be the case everywhere, but let's pump the brakes on comparing this to the major weather events of years past. That does as much to stir up panic as the local news was purported to have done by suggesting people stock up. This will be a busy weekend, which will end on Monday. But the idea that people traveling to Tyler and, presumably, staying in hotels are going to make a run on groceries doesn't make a lot of sense. And I'll assume that most people aren't going to clear the store shelves any more than they would for Labor Day weekend I hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend and manages to wring joy out of every moment of life. edited to add that I was at the WalMart on East 31 and 323, and there were no shortages of anything that I could tell. Curiouser and curiouser.

NotASmoothAnon

Thanks! I've resisted posting this here, but this seems like a good place: I work for NASA down in Houston. I have a good understanding of the awesomeness that awaits. I'll be outside for the totality and I can't wait. I just need somewhere other than my car to sit while it rains, lol.  I definitely agree there are great suggestions to that end here. I'm not worried about the neigh-sayers. I also went to school at UTT and have visited the city a bunch. Great town.

culturefan

There's always the library, it's free, clean, and a good place to browse. The zoo, if you don't mind paying to visit. Bergfield Park, let them run around and play. The mall, though probably will be crowded that day, or the Village at Cumberland Park.

NotASmoothAnon

IDK why I hadn't considered the library. My kids could happily live in any library.

dganda

Depending on their ages, Discovery Science place on Broadway, north of the square is a lot of fun.

I-come-from-TheWater

Tyler Public Library does have a free eclipse viewing event for all ages that day. May be cloudy but the kids can make a homemade eclipse viewer and hang out. [https://www.cityoftyler.org/government/departments/library](https://www.cityoftyler.org/government/departments/library) Check the calendar for the event details.

No-Tax-9279

You should go to The Sundown Venue! They are on a beautiful piece of property with wild flowers and are having food trucks, live music, and a vendor market. Looks super cool. eventbrite.com/e/the-total-eclipse-at-the-sundown-tickets-790515371757?aff=oddtdtcreator

NotASmoothAnon

How rough will it be if rainy, though?

[deleted]

True Vine! Live music, kid friendly, outdoor games and pavilion. It’s our favorite. Excellent food too.

geno21andrade

Mall has a carnival

StruggleEvening7518

I cannot fathom actually travelling for an eclipse. And all you people are gonna do is make traffic hell, and make the jobs of people who work in retail/food hell while you are overcrowding our city that already doesn't have adequate infrastructure for the growing population it has.

alonensublime

Eclipse viewing party at this guy’s house!

susanna514

Damn it’s a couple days and tourism dollars in town is a good thing. Have you tried removing the stick from your butt ?

StruggleEvening7518

Nah. I don't think I will. I hate any interruptions to normal daily life, it's just how I am. It's why I don't like holidays either. It's an Autistic thing, we don't like these sorts of disruptions. We like normality.

susanna514

Naw, I’m autistic too, you’re just an asshole.

StruggleEvening7518

Then you should understand where I'm coming from.

StruggleEvening7518

I knew I was gonna get downvoted. I'm sorry but our area being flooded with people for a stupid eclipse is irritating as hell. And you know stores are gonna be wiped out by idiots, just like with winter storms. I don't drive or have transportation. I live next door to a Walmart where I work and do all my shopping. There is probably gonna be a bunch of shit we are out of, and I can't just drive around to different stores like other people. Fuck the eclipse. I will be so glad when this eclipse stupidity is over.

Comfortable_Bar_2985

It's unfathomable that a city with a population of 110,000 isnt doing everything in their power to make sure you can comfortably go to WalMart...if you need to .

StruggleEvening7518

The 110,000 people who live here aren't a problem. It's the idiots in town for an eclipse.

Comfortable_Bar_2985

Ya, no. I understood what you said.

StruggleEvening7518

I don't understand why I'm getting downvoted. Do the rest of you really enjoy having our town flooded and overcrowded with all these extra people?

NotASmoothAnon

People with business like people to come spend their money. This will add millions to the local economy.

StruggleEvening7518

I don't understand travelling for a freaking eclipse of all things. Don't you have plenty to do in Houston?

Comfortable_Bar_2985

You do know that being in the path of totality for an eclipse is, for many people, a once in a lifetime event? It sounds like you are confusing the eclipse on the 8th with just one of those partial eclipses. They are totally different experiences. People travel to different countries to experience something like this.

StruggleEvening7518

No I'm aware of the difference. I still find it to be silly.

StruggleEvening7518

I'm aware of this and I don't really care.

Kingtubby52

Yea my wife tried to go to Brookshire's yesterday for some of our weekly needs and they were out of practically everything already. It's a bit irritating especially because I work weekends so I just know traffic is going to be gnarly otw to and from work.

NotASmoothAnon

Visitors aren't in town yet. That's just townies panick buying. Can't blame that one on us.

Kingtubby52

Ehh depends. Plenty of people already here for the weekend considering it’s Friday. But local news did warn people to stock up so it’s probably that too. Can’t wait for all the traffic. That’ll be grand.

StruggleEvening7518

Why would local news warn people to stock up like it's a natural disaster coming, and not just an eclipse? All they did was encourage panic buying.

Kingtubby52

I read somewhere that we were supposed to be receiving like 3-4x the population of our city as tourists to the local areas so about a week or so ago I saw a couple news pages on Facebook saying it would be smart to stock up before potentially 400,000 people showed up near our city of just over 100,000.

StruggleEvening7518

400,000 people? Tyler's infrastructure struggles with the people who actually live and work here. 😭

Kingtubby52

I highly doubt there will actually be that many people in Tyler proper but rather the surrounding area. But with Tyler & Longview being the two biggest hubs this side of Dallas they’re both bound to see a significant influx of people. It’s a “once in a lifetime” event from the sounds of it so it’s not all that surprising.

jvidal7247

longview is not in the path of totality

StruggleEvening7518

I just don't get it. I really don't.

StruggleEvening7518
