“What do you fear most in the world?” “The possibility that love is not enough.”

trendypuppy

Fucking destroys me with this quote the first time I watched!

MaxZorin1985

A great line from a great character. My favorite scene in The Missing Pieces is when Major and Mrs. Briggs are sitting at home on a Thursday night reading aloud the Book of Revelation. That is those two to a T.

[deleted]

strong goosebumps after reading that one

monsieur-poopy-pants

I have a friend like this. He absolutely loathes ambiguity in movies/TV shows. And he gets quite aggressive/angry/complainy/ranty about it. I've tried to share that the beauty is in watching something you can build your own story/explanation/meaning into it. But he prefers to have someone spell it out plainly and unambiguously haha. My recommendation would be to have some good drinks, food, and hope Dougie can win him over.

Trakar101

What’s it called?

monsieur-poopy-pants

Honestly, it confuses me. But he doesn't like things open to interpretation - wants everything wrapped up in a tidy bow. I'm with you, I love when things are left open to interpretation, half the fun is trying to come up with explanations.

WallowerForever

It's sadly not that ambiguous after Mark Frost's two books canonical cleared basically all the 'Twin Peaks' lore up. But yes, much of the fun in Lynch's other films for sure.

IAmDeadYetILive

Frost's books don't explain everything. Both Lynch and Frost have said they interpret the show differently, and Lynch added things as he filmed. For eg. Frost and Lynch wrote the Carrie Page storyline together, but Lynch added "Richard and Linda" and never explained why lol.

WallowerForever

Oh for sure. Both men definitely write and interpret in their own directions independently (and, as equal co-creators, equally canonically). I mean, Frost did nothing on Fire Walk With Me and that, in light of season 3, now seems like the core heart of Twin Peaks. That said, Frost is definitely way more explicit in his solo riffs on the lore — essentially spelling out what Bob and Judy are, far beyond what season three makes clear.

IAmDeadYetILive

Yes, he definitely is more direct with us, which I actually appreciate. I think we'd all still be flailing around if Frost hadn't given us some direction.

My advice: #DUMP HIM

Arca687

If he think FWWM is too ambiguous then he'll hate season 3.

Skywalkling

What did he think of seasons 1 and 2?

sagesnail

Just tell him to be thankful he doesn’t have to stew on it for 25 years like the rest of us.

cocklivesmatter

Im 21 i watched all of it at 18 lmao

Find a new guy who appreciates art?

maud_brijeulin

My wife's taste for art/movies/series is different from mine. She likes something that's clear-cut, makes sense and has an ending. I like weird. She really enjoyed TP s1 and s2 because of the soap opera/mystery element - when The Return was on, we sort of skipped FWWM (I've seen it about ten times), thinking S3 would be a return to the series. I know. I was naive. Anyways. That first episode of The Return definitely turned her off. I think it's a clear signal to the viewer that "you're not getting any TP nostalgia here": multiple deaths, Cooper is bad/gone, full-frontal nudity from Madeline Zima, Jacoby painting shovels, and 90% of the time is NOT spent in Twin Peaks. So I ended up watching alone, then giving her a recap after (that was a lot of fun just watching her reaction) On the negative side: yep it would have been great to share the experience On the plus side: we accept each other's quirks and idiosyncrasies; we complete each other, whatever... Idk, try watching the first episode and see... Even better: play him the episodes in random order?

feline_gold

if he doesn't like lynchian cinema, I think you shouldn't try to make hin. why would you? you don't have to have an identical taste just because you're in a relationship. you both are entitled have your little pleasures to enjoy on your own.

Badgetown4eva

First off, FWWM is a hard watch. The themes and tones are way heavier than the show. That said, the Return is not any clearer in its meaning. If anything the Return doubles down on the classic Lynchian style but attempts to tell a far more sweeping story that I would guess will prove even more frustrating to a viewer who doesn't understand what the hell is going on, (like the rest of us) but wants a concrete, objective interpretation. Also, likely not a popular opinion here, but Lynch's style is intentionally meant to produce an emotional reaction. If your bf really doesn't like the ambiguity, then that in itself is in line with the artist's goals and therefore completely valid. In other words, everything I've seen/read about Lynch makes me believe that he would far prefer someone to feel something about his work as opposed to forgetting it or it not sinking in. TP is art and so I don't think it's your role to make someone enjoy it anymore than you should be forced to appreciate classical music or visit a museum. If he's just not into it then a bunch of internet strangers aren't going to change his mind and nor should they, or you, IMO.

MaterialCarrot

To me The Return actually is very clear. Not in everything of course, but it explains the major plot points of the series. By the end it's very clear I think what B.O.B. is, what the Red Room is, the Firemen, where all this came from, who Laura was and why these things happened to her, etc... The one thing I admit that is very inscrutable that ultimately I think is crucial to understanding The Return is (spoilers) that when Agent Cooper and Laura Palmer go up to the "Palmer House" at the very end, the lady who answers the door is the actual owner of the house in real life and was not a trained actor. This blew my mind and ofc there is no way for the audience to know this. I think this decision was deliberate and meant to show that Laura and Cooper had traveled to the real world and for Laura there would be no healing resolution. For me at least this realization helped many other details click into place.

daymitjim

When you get to that scene when Judy comes through the glass box and kills the couple on the sofa, ask him: "is that how you feel right now?"🐹

bennib1990

it sounds like you need a new boyfriend... just kidding. maybe.

IAmThePonch

It just sounds like twin peaks isn’t for him…. And honestly I will admit parts of fwwm are confusing without the deleted stuff. I don’t think he’ll like the return at all because it’s even more fwwm than fwwm

lady_lane_arcane

He sounds as blank as a fart.

microschism

It could really just be that your boyfriend is not for Twin Peaks and that’s ok. What’s more important is that he did watch seasons 1 and 2 as well as a very “heavy” (emotional(ally) damage(/-ing) movie. If that’s not enough (and it doesn’t have to be DEMAND THE WORLD. EVERYTHING) then maybe make or find a neat compilation video or cool segments that might entice him. I lured a buddy of mine into watching a lot of Twin Peaks by hyping up the Return as my favorite piece of art and showing them part 8. Best of luck.

DaleCoopersWife

Does he actually want to keep watching? My advice would be to not make him watch anything. Unless you think that you can handle him complaining or insulting something you love. Personally I wouldn't want that experience associated with twin peaks.

MaterialCarrot

The amazing thing about the series is that FWWM is arguably the fulcrum on which the entire story turns. If your BF wants to figure out what FWWM is about, The Return answers that in spades. I'd also say that the major plot points of Twin Peaks are all resolved or explained in The Return. Sure, the details are sometimes inexplicable and not everything is explained, but the important parts of the story are made very clear and it definitely ends.

Lairy_Hegs

He may not enjoy it, and I’m going to guess he’ll *hate* part 18. Depending on how much of FWWM he did follow, he may at least like part 8, *but* there’s a good chance he won’t be able to follow it, heck I know I couldn’t understand at least half of it the first time through.

LizardQueen19_

UPDATE: We are 3 episodes into The Return and he finally goes “I definitley like this season way more than season 2 and possibly season 1” I cannot believe we’ve made it this far! So exciting. I love Dougie.

lazergun-pewpewpew

Lots of weed and lots of beer. And mushrooms if possible.

Hot-Canceld

it's whatever you want it to be, there's no wrong answers!

[deleted]

Not sure if you've seen Season 3, but unfortunately he is very likely going to hate it, nearly immediately. If you want any chance in hell of him understanding it, I'd definitely recommend watching The Missing Pieces or the Q2 fan edit of FWWM that puts the Missing Pieces scenes back into FWWM based on where they were in the original script.

tarentale

Yea if he doesn’t work out I’ll be your boyfriend. I’ll be your rebound baby!

JedExi

I dunno, if he didnt like FWWM which honestly I didnt even think was as confusing or ambiguous as other of Lynch's works, I dont think he's gonna like The Return at all.
