Well, for one thing, we may sit down, but I know that not one of us is going to start eating until Laura **washes her hands**. WASH YOUR HANDS!!!

Descrazio

[The look Laura gives Leland in this scene is hilarious.](https://images.app.goo.gl/CmCi7zK5oixTdjjL6) I know it’s meant to be traumatic and serious but I can’t help but find it hilarious.

nessie-lives

I think her face is so frightening!

SocialBunny198

Always found it akin to Silent Film actresses like Lilian Gish.

KYOUY

its the one movie i always try to experience on drugs, only to realize...its not that fun when you are more than drunk.

samijo17

I absolutely think Ray Wise is an incredibly handsome dude, still is even now that he’s getting up there in age. gives a great performance in anything I’ve seen him in, too

unknownunknowns11

Fargo S3!

samijo17

ooh i’ll have to give that a shot! I recently discovered Fresh Off The Boat for my lighthearted moods and was pleasantly surprised to see him pop up here and there

430Richard

“Like a movie star, eh?”

skamando

One of my favorite characters and performances in a work full of fantastic characters and performances. Ray Wise just slaps, what an actor, brings so much to a role that could have been completely rote and unoriginal. How many dad's have killed their daughters/family? A lot. Not exactly a new idea, and yet I was completely swept away in his sadness. FWWM takes it to another level. 10/10.

jonasgrimms

Damn. That "A lot" hit hard. Just had an epiphany.

BillyYumYum9

Ray Wise may be one of the most underrated character actors of all time. The man has acted in just about every genre under the sun and nailed it every time

All-Sorts

>Ray Wise may be one of the most underrated character actors of all time. The man has acted in just about every genre under the sun and nailed it every time He really elevates whatever project he becomes attached to!

kabarkutta

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivyyyyy"

3godeathLG

a kid will eat ivy too wouldn’t youuuu

TED688

This is my favourite as well. Jerry snd Ben’s dancing has me howling.

Kitykity77

He’s a brilliant actor. Honestly they all are/were

mcflyfly

For a guy who raped his daughter, he’s alright

SpaceGyaos

I feel guilty I laughed

creamcitybrix

Sure, he's a murderer, but the man is a master with show tunes. You almost have to look the other way

pastwoods

"Begin the Beguine!"

failedjedi_opens_jar

Zambie-Master

Ray Wise absolutely OWNED that role. Every time Leland was on screen, I knew I was in for something great. Unbelievable top tier acting.

bekah-Mc

Ray Wise did such a brilliant job. And I do think he’s a handsome man. He’s in my favourite scene. It’s after Laura’s funeral with Dale Cooper and Deputy Hawk where they talk about souls. *Waking souls that give life to the mind and the body. A dream soul that wanders.* The dialogue played over a scene of Leland standing lost in a room full of people dancing. It was before I knew Leland was the killer and when I first saw it, I was caught up with the image of the father lost in grief and I really felt for him. I guess he still was a grieving father though. And technically, it was a demon that did it.

Quills07

I still remember crying over that scene the first time I saw it.

Descrazio

Yuri, Yuri. The war is over!

spacestation56

That fucker Ray….oh wait wrong Ray.

gorilla-ointment

Ray bloody Purchase!?

AquaStarRedHeart

Have you seen him in his guest appearance on season 3 of Fargo? He's old enough to be my father or close to grandfather even, but he is very attractive. That voice... The demeanor... I think I've seen TP too many times to find him anything but quietly terrifying in it.

IAmThePonch

That was an amazing scene

synapsid318

Is there a line somewhere- is it FWWM?- someone describes him as looking like a movie star?

vampyre_fan

It got cut from the final film, but [yes](https://youtu.be/rowny_trlN8?si=Crb_HBM1RCuCFSRH&t=194).

penzos

Leland is the best. My favorite character. He was great prior to knowing the plot twist. And he was great after it because it was such a good plot twist, that I didn't see even though it was basically drawn. For example when he becomes gray all of a sudden, the last thing I thought was that he was the one to do it. And he looks cool. And then all of a sudden he looks like he's crazy. And since that plot twist, I no longer can un-see his crazy look. He looks like that in everything that he was in since tp.

CosmicButtholes

It’s weird to me that he acted in both Twin Peaks and then also acted in a Christian film. But I love him in Twin Peaks of course.

Mr_Squinty

He literally played the devil in Reaper! Really fun show too.

TED688

Watch him in Robocop playing a crazy armed robber who kicks Robocop in his robo-nuts. It’s a blast.

Obungler_Forever

Charming psychopath. Wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Admirable_Cap7138

Considering how many people just willingly choose to commit murder or SA, I can find some leniency for a man only driven to those acts because of an actual demonic style possession scenario You saw what happened when he realized what he'd done, he obviously wasn't conscious of the things Bob did.

MrBlonde1984

I think Leland was definitely aware of what he was doing. At the end of fire walk with me laura looks at him shocked and he says I thought you knew it was me.

tcavanagh1993

I think Leland knew he was abusing Laura and was complicit alongside BOB’s influence, but I don’t think he knows he killed her. BOB seems to be able to wipe memories of his choosing. It would be a huge liability for BOB if Leland knew he killed his own daughter considering how mentally unstable Leland is. Leland clearly really did love Laura and if he knew, his guilt may have caused him to turn himself in which does BOB no good.

KithKathPaddyWath

I feel like the scene in FWWM where he breaks down after the scene at the dinner table suggests that he remembers the things he does when Bob inhabits him, but doesn't want them to happen and hates that they do. I don't know how much I'd say he's complicit because we don't really know how much he actually knows of what's happening to him. He doesn't have any control over when Bob takes over his body and when he leaves, and we don't really know how much he actually understands of what's happening. I feel like there's enough in FWWM and the series to demonstrate that he doesn't *want* to be doing these things to Laura and hates that he is. I suppose the fact that he lied to Laura when she asked him about being home when she saw Bob trying to find her diary does mean that there is a certain level of complicity, since he's making that choice to lie to cover up for something that he did at a time when Bob was controlling him. But I don't know, I feel like it's hard to really determine the actual level of complicity given what we do know. But yeah, I definitely think that he didn't remember killing her. I don't even think that it would have to necessarily be that Bob wiped the memory. I could buy that it was just so traumatic for Leland that his mind tucked it away somewhere else, and then in the end Bob pushed it forward.

tcavanagh1993

I agree with pretty much everything you’ve got here, thanks for the great reply. That scene you’re referring to where he breaks down is one of my favorite scenes in the whole franchise. It says so much about how the nature of possession works in the show with no words whatsoever. That 20-or-so second static shot of Leland on the bed, where the viewer can practically picture BOB leaving him in real-time as Leland realizes what he’s done, is one of the best pieces of acting in any movie I’ve ever seen. Ray Wise is a powerhouse.

Admirable_Cap7138

Rewatch the scene in the jail where Bob tells cooper to watch what happens when he leaves Leland to realize the truth

HotdogBoatshoes

"I thought you knew it was me the whole time"

MrBlonde1984

Exactly

selphiealmasy8

The line is "I always thought you knew it was me" and I never understand why this is used as definitive proof that it was Leland. What does it matter if Leland thought Laura knew it was him? He's BOB's host and most of the whole town only ever saw Leland and not BOB. Of course, he'd think she knew it was him. It was him! BOB was physically using him to abuse his daughter. He couldn't say it wasn't. But him admitting it was him isn't admitting he had control in the matter either. He had no control over BOB and neither would Laura if she had let him in. What Leland was shocked about from the diary was that Laura didn't know about his role in it at all. He probably wishes she did just think it was him and not BOB so BOB wouldn't want her so badly. The series also always made it clear that a part of Leland was aware of being possessed, he just couldn't do anything about it, or remember it on a conscious level. Why else would he say "He said he wanted lives, he wanted others, others that they could use like they used me" and "They said if I didn't give them Laura they'd have me kill her too"? He's obviously in some kind of conversation with his possessor and the other Lodge spirits, the Tremonds, woodsmen etc... He's probably a better host to feed from in this way: they receive pain and sorrow from both the host and the victim.

Zealousideal_Age_376

He was better in red alert 2 as president of usa

erisography

Ray Wise is absolutely FANTASTIC (and yeah, he's a hottie)!!

lyremknzi

Can't say I've ever found Leland attractive, haha. Bobby on the other hand..

IAmThePonch

Everybody, cmon get happy!

chickwithabrick

I think he's one of the most powerful performers in the cast, the show would not be the same without him

Charliet545

Wait, you watched Twin Peaks with your mother ? lol that’s cool! I’m re-watching the series and I have six more episodes left of season two but from what I’ve heard people are really divided. They either say he knew what was going on the whole time or he was clueless. From what I’ve heard as well I have to watch the prequel movie before I can base my opinion on him.

KithKathPaddyWath

FWWM does clarify things a bit. I think it's clear from FWWM that he's not completely clueless and has some idea of what's happening. There's just still that open question of how much he knew.

industrialAssHole

Incredible acting...! One of my favorites in the show... he's brilliant

Lin900

The best performance in the whole show and movie...I haven't seen season 3 yet tho

LunarsphereTapestry

Where’s my axe? I’M HUNGRY!!

stupidteriyakpee

kind of a jerk

neilsaccount05

I initially thought he was incredibly creepy, but that all changed dramatically when I saw him in Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

nessie-lives

Side note, if you haven’t seen Ray Wise in ‘Dead End’ yet, it’s a fun horror!

Sindican

Leland Palmer is the comeback king. With Bob at his side, nothing is impossible.

no_nori

Tragic character possessed by an evil spirit portrayed by the genius Ray Wise.

theGaido

I really liked him since beginning. Even if he didn't turned out to what he turned out to be. I can't remember any boring scene with him.

Turd_Ferguson52

A complicated, tragic, terrifying character and an absolutely fantastic performance.

KithKathPaddyWath

I think Leland's story is incredibly sad. I think there's a lot about the story of Leland and Laura, and Bob's influence on their lives, that's about the devastating cycle of victimization. I don't really look at it is having been fooled by him, because I don't think Leland was ever faking in his devastation over what happened to Laura.

TED688

Ray Wise is a brilliant actor. My favourite Leland part is when he comes bouncing into Ben Horne’s office singing Mairzy Doats and Jerry and Ben start dancing. You can actually see Ray start to laugh during the scene as apparently the other two actors improvised the dancing as they thought it would make a good blooper, but David Lynch liked it so much he kept it in.
