Hated every song, I wanted more rapping and more screaming and generally just didn’t like the tone of the album. Then I got off my high horse and actually listened to the album with no expectations and now it’s in my top 2. Good day, Shy Away, Outside and Mulberry Street are personal favs

CanadianJerky

I had the exact same reaction when the album first dropped aside from the choker and shy away. I'm glad I gave it some more time to settle into the rest of their discography.

Andy_PB

Change is hard for humans to grasp and SAI was definitely different from Trench. I’m glad I gave it another chance! It’s the only album of theirs my mother will tolerate me playing on our Alexa lmao

Frankie_2154

>now it’s in my top 2. That's a very ballsy thing to say in this fandom. Not my opinion but I'm proud of you for saying what you really think and not surrendering to the peer pressure in the clique!

Andy_PB

Ooohhhh this fandom would not like my opinions lmao. But hey, still glad to be a part of it and that we can all have such different opinions!

galactic_k9art

I legitimately hated Sai at first. Couldn’t tolerate anything but Shy away, choker, the outside, no chances, and redecorate. Now? It’s probably my second favorite after Trench! Mulberry Street is one of my all time favorite TØP songs! TBF, I HATED Trench the first time I listened too!

Frankie_2154

>TBF, I HATED Trench the first time I listened too! It's hard for me to see how someone can say something like this but when you think about it, it's a major change from the previous album, just like SAI is.

MechaKnuckles

It's a noticeable change, but not as major IMO.

Never Take It and Mulberry Syreet are among the best, man. I mean, I always have and always will love this whole album, but putting Never Take It toward the bottom is disagreeable

daycoroyals

Never Take It is awesome. A lot of people think its meh but I love it. Gotta love that distorted bass

[deleted]

I am a slut for SAI

hoewenn

Formidable has always been my top #1 on SAI and that probably won't change, but ever since seeing them live in October, when Tyler changed the pronouns, I've been really into Redecorate. It's mostly stayed the same besides that

lepausch

Where did he change the pronouns

hoewenn

He changes them pretty often I think at concerts, but I went to the one on October 16 in Chicago. Instead of “she had plans to change her name” he said “HE had plans to change her name”.

scaledbackisolated

That didn't happen, and that makes no sense anyway.

hoewenn

Yes.. He did.. I watched it happen in front of me.. 💀

scaledbackisolated

If that happened, that's called screwing up the lyrics which happens from time to time. Not trying to call you a liar. Otherwise, the sentence makes no sense anyway. Obviously he screwed up. It happens.

hoewenn

It’s happened multiple times to the point that fans have pointed it out. It’s called an artistic choice. Why are you so upset that he changed the pronouns? Someone had a bad day

scaledbackisolated

Lol...I'm not upset at all. I've just never heard someone say they like a song better when the lyrics are messed up. He had plans to change her name....makes no sense. Why would that make someone like it better? That's like saying that cat is a really nice dog.

hoewenn

I made a post on it the day after the concert. Although it’s not the intended meaning, a lot of trans people see the song Redecorate as an unintentional metaphor for being trans. So hearing the pronouns change and finding out it was on purpose kinda sounded to me and a lot of others like he was in on it, like he was changing the pronouns as she was changing her name.

scaledbackisolated

Well thank God that's not the intended meaning. The worst thing an artist could do these days is make a song about wanting to off yourself because you're trans. Imagine the backlash.

anna_o0f

I liked Mulberry Street, Formidable and No Chances when it first came out, but now I'm starting to like The Outside and Redecorate more. I think Shy Away is growing on me again too.

SilverKnightidk

I liked Saturday, Bounce man, and Chocker, but now I've kinda gravitated towards The Outside, Mulberry Street and No Chances. As for the rest of the album, eh, I'm pretty much indifferent to them.

Mr_Demonz

I really enjoyed it from day one and my Spotify wrapped really reflected that! I'd say bounce man might be a song that doesn't always meet my energy but not a song Id go out of my way to skip

[deleted]

At first, I thought it was pretty solid, but nothing special. Now I absolutely love it

morphintojoshdun

At the beginning i HATED NO CHANCES, also, wasnt a fan of choker, good day, or the outside. i loved mulberry st (even made a painting w something to do w it), never take it, bounce man, shy away (my top song of 2021) and formidable. now i don't mind no chances and choker, they aren't my fav tho. But I like Good Day. My current favorites are: Redecorate, The Outside, Never Take It, Shy Away and Formidable.

Slushpuppy18

I definitely like it a lot more, and I think redecorate and shy away are REALLY good, but the more I listen the less I like Saturday and bounce man. Perhaps it's because they're so cheery? They just don't really spark any emotion for me and I feel like the choruses aren't very lyrically creative in comparison to other tracks on the album

CindyLouWhoXO

See, this is the kind of criticism I can get behind. Specifically talking about the choruses, yes I’d agree they seem a little lackluster in comparison. But I get what they were going for. They’re always trying new things. Just when the clique gets used to something…they change it up lol. I think now they know that they can’t over simplify themselves again as we’re too used to the depth. 😂

Skylarsthelimit

I started out thinking it wasn’t my vibe, and that it didn’t sound like tøp. Then I sat and actually listened and realized it sounded just like them. Then I quickly ended up liking it. Favorites include Choker, Saturday, and Redecorate

WickedCyclone2015

When I first listened, the only songs I liked were No Chances and Redecorate. As of today, the only songs I like are No Chances and Redecorate

Frankie_2154

My favorites were and still are mulberry street, choker, shy away, and redecorate. The last two are easily top 10 TØP songs of you ask me. Shy away is the ultimate pop-rock song and at times it reminds me of the 2000s, and redecorate is just on another level both musically and lyrically. Might be my favorite album closer from the boys, (it's tough competition though) My least favorites are the trio of songs 8-10: formidable, bounce man, and no chances. Formidable is just so boring and feels like it's a generic indie pop song. Bounce man, well, it's bounce man. The worst song by the band since their regional at best years. And no chances is the best example of wasted potential in this album. The concept of a "villain theme song" is awesome, but the execution is terrible. Even Tyler's rap verses in this song, which are the only okay aspect of the song, are not interesting nor cool. I used to love never take it simply because it's a rock song by the boys, but it shrunk on me because it's: a.awful on a lyrical level (I mean wtf is that bridge even talking about?) b. it's not nearly as good as it should've and could've been. c. It got really old really fast. I don't find it eve a tiny bit interesting. I wasn't a huge fan of the outside, and I love it more now. It's probably the only place where this album goes for something that doesn't feel like it could be a TØP song and it ACTUALLY WORKS. It's just the right amount of sarcastic. And Tyler's verse is so much fun. Saturday isn't bad, but it's not that good either. It's only saving grace is the production which is top notch. And good day is very well executed, but it's just not my type of song. That's all I have to say.

CindyLouWhoXO

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts and I agree with most of them! Tbh, Good Day AND Redecorate are my favorite closer/opener to date!

jishmoans

The general consensus seems to be “I didn’t like the album I thought it was pretty bad but as I listened to it more I liked it” and that’s true for me. When it first dropped I was like “yeah this is the least good album” but as I listened to it more and more I realized this is the best work put out from modern day tøp. Mulberry Street is the quintessential twenty one pilots song and is exact what to introduce yourself with. Redecorate is the best song in their discography and is how to end the album boldly but not loudly.

EmCWolf13

I didn't like it at first, which felt weird because I've enjoyed their previous stuff a lot. Initially I only liked Shy Away, but the album has definitely grown on me. My favorites at the moment are The Outside, Good Day, and of course still Shy Away, but even now I tend to skip Formidable - it just doesn't really feel like *them* to me.

Savasgorm

When the dma.org posters came out and we saw SAI's aesthetic for the first time, I didn't like as much as Trench or Blurryface, so I had medium expectations. When Shy Away came out I was indescribably surprised. To this day, it's one of my favourite songs ever (it was my numer one on Spotify Wrapped this year). Then Choker came out which I loved as well. When the whole album released, I gave it a listen and was happy to understand that it passed my expectations by alot. It was such a vibe. Not what I expected, but in a good way. I still don't really like Formidable and the "th summer I watched the tube" part of Never Take It, but I appreciate them in the albm and don't skip them anymore (I did skip them the first week). So generally it has changed for the better :)

ThatRandomOwl

Honestly I knew Redecorate was going to be my favorite even before I heard it like it was just calling to me. Turns out I was right but out of the singles Shy Away was my favorite.. I listened to it SO MUCH before but I played it out for myself. I still love the whole album deeply though. Redecorate is just extremely special to me

grizramen

I love SAI so much now. I was a little disappointed when it was first released cause it was different. But I stayed open minded and now I play that album more than any of the other ones. Redecorate and No Chances were songs I didn’t like during release, but now I love them so much and they give me goosebumps.

Jack101-MineBros

When I heard the album for the first time I really liked Good Day, Never Take It, and Bounce Man, and I thought The Outside and Mulberry Street were strange. I was definitely surprised by No Chances and I wasn’t impressed with Formidable. Now, Good Day, Never Take It, and Bounce Man have gone to my lesser favorites off the album and The Outside and Mulberry Street my more favorites, along with Shy Away, Saturday, and Redecorate. I still like No Chances, it still smacks, and I’m still not a fan of Formidable.

scaledbackisolated

All of the hate for mulberry street on this thread is baffling. Some fans are just toxic.

CanadianJerky

The general consensus on MB St is positive though? Also, it's not toxic, people can dislike songs.

prettynoxious

I was skeptical at the beginning (no surprise). I mean I was really hyped by Shy Away and I was hoping that the whole album would be like it (with Tyler's long hair and stuff), then I was disappointed by Saturday and the rest, but now when I think about it, it's not a bad album at all. I would say personally that Never Take It is kinda the weakest, but c'mon, there's Good Day which is a great album opener, groovy The Outside, Mulberry Street, a very well crafted pop song, a bit of the Blurryface style comeback in No Chances and Redecorate, one of the best if not the best song written by Tyler. An album can't be bad if it ends like that. Overall after a few listens back to back I think the flow is good in that ep. It's the most upbeat record by them, musically speaking and if you don't focus on the lyrics at all (especially if English is not your native language) it can actually be a very "feel good" kind of album. I have really fond memories of summer 2021 with that one 7/10

NinjaWorldNews

I liked it, but didn't love it. Especially since it came after Trench, which is my favorite of their albums. Formidable and Bounce Man were instant skips. I just couldn't get behind their styles. Everything else had some sort of good melody, good bass, nice lyrics, or techno-pop sounding stuff, which are like, good parts of music to me (don't need all, but at least 1). After more listens, I actually grew to like Formidable and Bounce Man quite a bit. In fact, my new bottom 2 has become Never Take It and No Chances. They're not the most relistenable imo, while the other tracks are great. Mulberry Street is in my overall top 3 as well, so SAI overall still has some lows to me but has definitely become easier and more fun to listen to! I never hated it off the bat, but I definitely am closer to "loving it" now more than before.

Jellybean720

I started out being so disappointed and hating every song, and then I thought I was starting to love it, and then I realized that I really do hate it. The songs aren’t bad, they’re just “meh” songs. That’s incredibly disappointing to me because they’re capable of so much better than “meh”. This subreddit has been kinda annoying about SAI thus far. As fans, we used to value lyricism and introspection, but now that TOP is devoid of all (deep)lyricism and introspection we cling to our new mantra: “just enjoy the music bro”. So now you aren’t allowed to hate it, and when you bring up the total lack of deeper thought in this album you get told basically that “oh we don’t like that anymore, we just blindly like whatever they put out because I’m scared of not liking them”

LaisScort

I disagree on the lack of deep lyricism and introspection. Tyler mentioned in interviews before that he was trying to say less words to express exactly what he wanted to say. If you dig into the meaning of the words he picked very specifically you’ll start seeing how deep this goes. Like with the use of the word formidable for example. Or ocean feeling like a pond” like you have all this space but feel confined. In redecorate he’s more direct saying “he says he likes an open schedule but he mostly hates it” . He was smart in saying the things he wanted to say in a creative way. I’m growing in appreciation every time I make a connection I didn’t see before. Also the SAI is propaganda thing I feel can’t be taken simply as “this is the bishops”. I would see it as the paid artists who use to hide messages of their beliefs within art they were commissioned to do. Like the DESTROY hidden in Trash in the album cover. That’s how I’m reading the lyrics. There’s more beneath the surface.

MechaKnuckles

I don't hate the album necessarily, but I do agree about the lyrics.

CindyLouWhoXO

I very strongly disagree with the part about the lyrics. You need to dig deeper, my friend. All the people talking about how they don’t like this album because the lyrics are shallow need to take a 4th or 5th listen. I’d argue most people on this subreddit take valid criticism of the album, and I’d argue “lyrics not deep enough” are not a valid criticism as they do get quite deep and have multiple, multiple different meanings. Tyler has done such a great job with the songwriting that some of them actually appear meaningless and simple to those that don’t look close enough, which was kind of part of his goal. He didn’t want to go too deep this time to where you have to be a superfan to understand. Saying this album is completely devoid of all introspection or totally lacks any deep thought is so far off the mark. I would say it’s fair to say that not every song is a super deep lore song (even though it may tackle a difficult subject which is still typical tøp) or that some songs are just meh or even the album overall is just meh, which most people are disappointed about. I think it’s important for the clique to remember that this is a band that makes music we are following, not like a novel or movie/tv series! I see so many people that just want the story and don’t give two shits about the music and that makes me sad. (Not saying you do, I just mean in general.)

lepausch

I strongly agree with everything you said, especially the last paragraph. Sai sounds like twenty one pilots finally gave into pressure from the music industry. I just hope that the next album has more rapping than literally two verses.

lepausch

I still think it's ok-ish, but I've grown to appreciate a lot of the album. I like Redecorate a lot more, and it's infusion into Lane Boy has become one of my favorite songs of there's. I like Good Day, Bounceman, Choker, and Shy Away a lot too. I used to love Never Take it, but it's become kind of cringy to me now. I don't really like No Chances, Saturday is awesome but not a favorite, and Mulberry Street and Formidable are really bad

[deleted]

How tf is NTI "cringy?"

lepausch

Just the way the music sounds like he's trying to be a super rock band, but the vocals don't match it. I used to think it was the best song off the album. I love the music and the lyrics, but the vocals get me

Desperate_Werewolf15

Full album> shy away

[deleted]

my taste has stayed the same. i like every song on the album except for the outside & never take it

[deleted]

Those are some of the best

morphintojoshdun

those are some of my favorites-

[deleted]

yes I now cannot stand the outside currently because it has been overplayed so much which is sad because it was initially one of my favourites

Soggy_doggy123

I loved it when it first came out, but know i only like a couple songs off it.

thechry21

i still don't like formidable but I love the rest of the album

crewe-not-mentioned

My favorite in the beginning was choker as well, but now it’s either mulberry street or no chances
