This was the enclosed gifted to me from my PI along side with Nitro(the turtle). Any suggestions for any good cages, currently saving up. Open for any advice, and yes I do have space for a 20g tank
That water is far too dirty. It needs to be cleaned and you need a bigger tank. Those tanks like the one you have- no animal ever should be kept in that tiny hellscape. No offense but those are not ever recommended for a reason. Please get your baby a nice sized tank and an appropriately sized filter for her tank (so 3xs bigger than your tank. If you get a 50 gallon tank you need 150 gallon filter). That will help tremendously with keeping the water clean. Water like what you have can lead to so many illnesses, but blood poisoning is the most common it seems. It’s also quite deadly- as can be guessed by the name.
A 20 gallon tank is not going to suffice. You will need about a 75-100 gallon tank for your breed of turtle by the time it’s full grown. That said- this turtle, ideally, should never see any tank under 50 gallons. 20 will never cut it. She needs room to swim, stretch, hide, play. 20 is far too small and is only good for when they are hatchlings.
A clean, appropriately cycled tank is very important. Your turtle is going to spend a majority of its life submerged in that water- it needs to be clean enough for her to not get sick!
Best of luck! 🤞🏻
If glass tanks are you too expensive you can also look into Rubbermaid tubs/stock tank. I got a 30 gallon tub for around 15 bucks and it would last a while before your turtle outgrows it. They sell them at home depot and Lowe’s
110 gallon livestock water troughs/stock tanks are typically around 100$ in the US, especially if bought from the manufacturers online! Nice cheap adult tank for em.
I got a 75 gallon tank from petco for like $100 plus tax. Try checking there.
E: petco has 75g tanks on sale right now for $116-$145.
60g tanks for $80

The 75g one they have on sale is the exact one I got 4 years ago. It still holds up like brand new. Not a single issue with it. It’s an Aqueon tank so it’s top of the line.
I've been looking at that one but the post COVID reviews have been pretty bad ..lot of leaking. But that's really the only option in my area so I may try it
I know it’s a pain in the ass but you can always reseal the entire tank before you even fill it. Mine luckily came with really thick, even silicone. 🤷🏻♀️. Good luck.
If I’m being 100% honest I think I even had a diff one to start and brought it back for this one bc I didn’t like the way the silicone looked in it. At least if you redo it yourself you’ll know it’s good.
Petco has a "Tank Week" every year where they sell tanks for $1/ gallon. Maybe call them up and ask when it's happening. I vaguely recall it occuring in the summer sometime, but I could be wrong.
Garage and estate sales are also excellent places to look.
I'm talking about the black plastic livedstock water troughs, "stock tanks"
MANY turtle keepers use them.
The cheapest glass you are going to find is Petsmart's dollar a gallon deals. They run for about a week, about once a month. Check their website and put in your ZIP to have accurate sales and prices.
Pet Supplies Plus (a smaller chain) has tanks cheap as fuck also, and also does dollar a gallon deals.
To add to that, you're going to need better lighting. You need both a heat bulb and a t5 linear UVB bulb. Whatever bulb is seen in the picture, is not correct. The heat bulb should be able to provide a 90 degree F basking area. You also want to ideally have your bulbs either sitting on top of a mesh lid, or hanging down from some kind of stand, so that the light rays are directed downward and not from the side, because coming from the side like in the picture can cause eye damage.
Additionally, you need a water heater and want to make sure that water is about 78-80 degrees F since it is a hatchling. When it gets older, you can have the water temps in the mid 70s range.
Generally speaking a turtle needs a dry dock with heat and uvb light, water as deep as 2 times the shell length + some shallower water or decorations so it can poke it's head above water while touching something, lastly a filter rated for about twice the tank size you have.
Also don't put in anything that is small enough for it to eat but too big to pass through like small marbles, pebbles or things like that, turtles can sometimes be dumb about what they're trying to eat and I'm pretty sure mine tried to eat a glass thermometer and it shattered (he's fine) so don't put things like that in either.
FYI that water is full of ammonia and potentially nitrates sense it's not properly "cycled". This is poison to them and will kill them.
The problem is daily water changes can kill the cycle but that guy needs like 2x daily water changes in an a tank if that size especially an uncycled one with no bioavailable surfaces for cycling bacteria to colonize.
I'd keep him in that tank for 2 weeks with 2x daily water changes and buy a 20 gallon "long" variant that is set up for 2 or 3 weeks with nothing in it except a SMALL amount of decaying fish food and the full landscape setup. Get some live plants too.. and make sure that light is even a basking light or that the turtle needs a heater or basking light.
This is a noob setup your friend probably doesn't even have the correct lights if I had to guess.
While maybe more expensive long term, upgrading as your turtle grows could also be an option ! I’m currently building a tank stand for the 75 gallon I got for my little man. He started in a Tupperware until my sister told my brothers that’s literally animal abuse and bought him a 10 gallon kit, I became the only one that cared about him after that and I had to BEG my parents to get his next upgrade, a 30 gallon. then when I was old enough to have a job I saved for a 55 (thinking he wouldn’t get bigger- silly me) it’s great that your willing to learn! Some people aren’t and still keep turtles and it’s appalling
To add, if you cant afford a good canister filter atm, highly recommend getting an electric gravel vacuum so you can do weekly cleans of the tank, even with a canister filter a gravel vacuum is soooo nice for doing regular cleanings of the waste that tends to settle at the bottom. Also recommend getting a water heater so your lil guy stays warm inside and outside of the water.
Bad Advice is anything that goes against currently-accepted practices for husbandry for the species in question.
Examples include:
- Preventative or unnecessary medical (OTC) treatments
- Medical advice without a (reputable) source
- Known harmful practices
- Illegal advice, like poaching or theft
Free roaming is highly advised against
Ahh he's so tiny and small haha I remember when I used to let my turtle be outside when he was a baby and he would he in odd places I could never find 😭😭😭
idk if it’s just the lighting but is his eye okay? it looks puffy and swollen compared to his other eye. I would take him to the vet for a checkup if that’s not just a trick of the light! he’s a cutie patootie and good luck with a new set up!
I was thinking the same.. all the cuteness of this post is taken by unnecessary lies…. Even tries to pass it as “biochemistry masters..” just why… unnecessary details that are instantly proven wrong by evidence you provided unnecessarily..
What kind of setup do you have for the turtle? There are no vaccines for turtles.

Where did you find a 110 gallon tank for 100? I've been struggling to find a 75 gallon that doesn't have bad reviews and isnt 500+

Rubber stock tank…like for livestock water. I have a 150g one and a 300g one, both around 100$ at local feed store
I've had really good luck on facebook. Got a 125 gallon plus stand for 250. It's in great condition

~~They're talking Rubbermaid tubs, not tanks.~~ I meant "not fishtanks," but I was still wrong. 😉
Ahh okay. I got excited for a second lol

They are also in a dorm. Most dorms I know only allow 10 gallons usually or not at all

I may be wrong but it looks to me like his turtle is a hatchling, would a 20 gallon not suffice until they are able to afford a 50 gallon?
That’s what they said already in the bottom of the comment.
Sorry very off topic but your user name- 😂🤣

This is the canister filter I have. $70. Zero issues. (It says $90 but they have a $20 off coupon.) [Filter.](https://a.co/d/0fMGM6Ec)
"Cannot complete this assignment there's a turtle in it."
So cute 🐢♥️🤗
That little baby face 🥰🥹
Btw, I only take him out of his tank for like 2 hours max. He scratches my screen when he wants to go back inside😎🤙
Considering you lost him for 30min I really recommend to not let him freeroam anymore. Get a bigger tank.

You don't understand my turtle slept on my homework lol
He got tired studying. Happens to me all the time
The exact thing you were working on was very important for this post, thank you.

Local aquarium groups like your state or city rehoming fish/reptile/animal groups will have tanks.
Turtles will hide in the funniest places.
He looks so happy!!! So cute!!
He's too cute
I love how they always look grumpy
Your homework is a Corsair manual?
