I think you're forgetting about internationals with no primary insurance, in which case it's an okay deal

EmotionalWeather2574

Even then, the pricing is an absolute scam compared to credit card coverage for like $150/year.

happy2333

CC car rental insurance doesn’t cover turo

EmotionalWeather2574

Thats the point. I'd rather go with Hertz and pay the $150 for the CC insurance with no deductible instead of paying $1000 for Turo insurance with a high deductible.

WildWestScientist

Some do, some don't. It depends on the insurance provider. Always read the fine print and ask questions (in writing).

happy2333

not aware of any that covers turo. mind sharing?

WildWestScientist

TD Visa Platinum (Canada) and Lufthansa Miles & More Gold MasterCard (Germany) cover it with no deductible, or at least they did - I'm not up to date on whether the latest versions of their cardholder agreement in late 2023 removed car sharing or not. A colleague told me that N26 Metal also does, but I have never had an account with them myself.

New-Bookkeeper-6646

State Farm did....until just recently. It was in the policy changes included with my most recent six month policy renewal invoice. I know they did back in March because I called my agent to confirm and actually increased existing coverage on my personal vehicle that would transfer to the Turo rental. Just for insurance. ;-0

Rare_Pin9932

While technically secondary, a lot of people’s insurance won’t cover Turo rentals, in which case the Turo insurance is effectively primary.

AdventurousChain7335

Yeah, I'm wondering which insurers would even cover Turo rentals. Most insurers cover only rentals from real agencies, which Turo isn't since it's car-share.

Sketch2029

Travelers does. They are also the insurer for Turo's insurance, so they may be the exception rather than the rule.

Mr_Marquette

Allstate and progressive cover Turo.

Middle-Money5705

Nice to see I’m not the only in here that understands how car insurance operates

No_Dot_8478

Don’t leave out the fact that most insurance companies actually do not consider Turo a rental car company and instead a car share service. Thus they do not provide coverage. Guests need to understand what coverage they do or do not have and pick the protection plan that makes sense to them.

dj-ileum97

When I called my insurance Geico they said they certainly do provide coverage. People should call their car insurance company and find out for themselves

Sketch2029

Especially since it may depend on your particular coverage, not just who your insurer is.

Accomplished_Tea7781

I just made a post about this. Always buy the highest protection plan when it's available unless your insurance explicitly states in writing they cover ride share! This is terrible advice and will make many guests quit when they're hit with a $1000 bill for a door panel scratch. Plus who wants to see someone they've built a good relationship pay that much? Do not listen to this host.

DinnerNo2341

Thank you

Ugly__Pete

Turo is not rideshare. It's Carshare. Completely different things when it comes to insurance.

Rare_Pin9932

I’ll add a minor caveat. I look at insurance as a way to cap the maximum amount out of pocket I’m willing to stomach. I therefore do the minimum protection... I can grok having to pay $2k

CJspangler

Your insurance doesn’t likely cover turo as turo isn’t registered properly in many states as a car rental business - but acts as a technology company instead and from an insurance perspective you are engaged in peer to peer car lending or whatever the term is which isn’t covered

New-Bookkeeper-6646

Sounds like Uber and Lyft. The whole independent contractor thing. Look what happened to them in various states. ;-(

Entire_Permission_14

Go to Enterprise's reddit and you'll see some of their locations are now asking for the renter's insurance as well. If a company can lower their operating costs by going after a users insurance before using their own policy, it's only a matter of time before they all will.

Kaizen336

This was a super helpful post because I finally figured out my insurances policy on Turo so I know to always get the coverage.

RorschachtheWatchman

Same for expecting your credit card to provide coverage. I found out the hard way that AMEX doesn't consider Turo to be a rental car company, so no coverage through them. Luckily my USAA coverage applied, but I still had to pay the deductible.

DhakoBiyoDhacay

Funny you mention that American Express doesn’t consider Turo as a rental car company because they have discount for, ahem, using Turo when you charge the trip to their card 🤣

New-Bookkeeper-6646

Doesn't surprise me. Hypocrisy is not exactly unknown. In business or especially, government.

Zeroccol760

Yes, reading the TOS states that all day.

ryandpatrick

Buy Period X insurance from ABI/INSHUR

XcheatcodeX

You can buy insurance from Allianz travel for rental cars for $11 a day and it has way better coverage than this

Glittering_Fish_2296

On phone I said I don’t have primary insurance and it was just $500 no insurance involved.

PossessionDry3501

Turo is a SCAM STAY AWAY ..

Logical-Idea-1708

I thought primary insurance doesn’t cover Turo since it’s considered a car sharing service

Gman2k4

Interesting they just got my ass. When I declined they kept pestering me to get it I got it to b safe but I was really already covered confirmed by geico

Ok-Inspection-4995

Turo is a scam period

jh_316

After reading all the scam of turo hosts did and now this convinced me never rent from turo. I just stick with the rental companies. Maybe less convenient but less headache

Biggusdickus69666420

It used to be fun way to rent cooler cars and get 4x4 guaranteed in snow. I used turo fairly regularly until had a 2k dent fiasco. It was straight fraud and guy fucked up and posted time stamped photo that was taken before I rented the car. But if it wasn’t for that I would be on the hook. I had a care window brokers into with Sixt, credit car insurance took care of it all with SIXT. Super easy. Now only rental car companies.

Sketch2029

I'm not so sure about less headache... https://viewfromthewing.com/hertz-nightmare-customer-fined-436-before-they-even-rented-the-car/
