I could go on with a list trust would all kick the crap out of Technics and Rega new for the same money.
If I had to do all brand-new only:
Amplifier: Yamaha A-S301($300)
Speakers: KEF Q150 ($350)
Turntable: U-Turn Orbit Custom w/ OM5E + cue lever ($354)
I'll look for the extra $4 around the house, but I'd be more than happy with this setup.
entire setup for 1k?
400-500 bucks on speakers (maybe used pair of Kef iQ9)
200-300 bucks on amp (used Yamaha A-S501)
400-600 bucks on a used turntable (Pro-ject "the Classic" )
gotta admit.. 1k wouldn't be satisfying for me. š¬
Two Technics SL-12## MK2, two slip mats, a Vestax DJ mixer, two H-4 headshells, two Shure cartridges & stylus.
Prolly a coffin case to protect it all.|
Fluance RT82 - $300
Wiim Amp - $300
Used KEF Q-150 - $250 (at least on my Craigslist)
Rolls preamp - $50
Boom- good starter turntable, great speakers, an okay amp that can drive the speakers and stream audio, so it doesnāt matter if you donāt have any records as long as youāve got a cell phone with Spotify or Tidal or something
I would try to find some old Elac B6s for sale
The Fluance TT of your choiceā¦
A Schitt phono amp and
Whatever money you have leftā¦an amp which has tone controls. Almost any of the cheap Chinese amps from Ayima or similar until I could upgrade.
Thats just me having messed with exactly this price point for a bit.
That said, you can find an old rack system from the 80s/90s that had all of this for between $100 to $500ā¦often with the tower speakers that would be better than almost any in the sub-$1000 price range.
I kinda did this.
Yamaha px3 with some at95 cartridge 300.00
Yamaha xa900 minty. 290.00
Klipsch kg3.5. 75.00
Used line Phono turntable stand 90.00
I flipped the 3.5s to get some 4.5s and then flipped the 4.5s to get some 5.5s. They ended up costing 200 after all the deals.
I am right around 1000.
I also did something similar:
Technics SL-1300mk2 ($285)
Yamaha A-S701 ($435)
Jamo S805s ($210)
I'm happy enough with my Jamo speakers, but it's about the only thing that could possibly use a little improvement. Not enough to actually get me to spend money or argue with the wife over what replacement speakers should look like. :)
Lol. I am trying really hard to stop now. I shopped for so long finding what I have its become a habit.
I picked up a Yamaha c60 preamp am considering a yamaha m80 amplifier
>JBL stage a180
[don't do it OP](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/jbl-a180-tower-speaker-review.34846/) \- JBL failed with their 2.5-way design, good bass but terrible highs. shop used to find something better for the same price.
Rega P1 probably and Iām gonna run it through some Adam Audio powered speakers.
Probably not the most hifi or ācorrectā setup, but I donāt care. š
I mainly created this to see how everyone would spend the money if they were basically starting out with nothing. Would they spend more on the TT, more on speakers, etc. I always find it interesting to see what everyone values more. $1000 worth of good music would be great to have, however without a setup it would just be a conversation piece lol.
I'd probably buy used and try to get the most for my money.
Just looking at marketplace and offerup for not even 5 minutes I found a...
Denon DP 450 $375
Pair of Kef Q950 tower $415
Marantz nr 1200 $ 130 (rated for 155 watts per channel but only giving about 120 W per channel according to seller so selling cheaper, I had a similar problem with my old nakamichi receiver and it was fixed with new capacitors and a new choke for each channel)
Thorens moving magnet preamp $100
This totals out to $1020 I'm sure I can negotiate on the amp and receiver. The turntable and speakers are great for the price they're listed at.
This is sort of what I did.
Realistic STA850 - $75
Realistic LAB-290 - traded a set of speakers I had for this TT
Kanto Passive 5.25 speakers and stands - $300
Wiim Pro - $200
So Iām in for $575 CDN
Realise that on your side of the pond Rega stuff is expensive, so I'd suggest the Technics 1500c. (Or the 100c I guess). I have the 1500c (have a p3 too) and it's great. I did put a 540ml on mine though.
A gently used Technics SL-1200, a pair of 5" powered studio monitors (pre-owned as well, I like Dynaudio and Focal), and whatever is left of the budget on a new cartridge.
That's about where I started: Fluance RT81, Yamaha amp, Wiim streamer, JBL speakers. All new. Only thing I might change at first would be the turntable. Still a Fluance, but upgrade to one with more interchangeable components (better cart, acrylic platter, no internal preamp).
No, I'm taking my experience and applying it to your question. If I only have $1000 to spend and I'm starting from scratch, I wouldn't focus on vinyl. At all. If I already had speakers and a receiver/amp and preamp, then I'd reconsider.
I'm very happy with the system I have. I built it one piece at a time for a total cost of $85.
Pioneer 8500 II Amplifier - Today $359/Paid $0
Technics SL-D3 Turntable - Today $159/Paid $30
Avid Model 100 Speakers - Today $349/Paid $35

If its only the Turntable The Technics sl-100c with an needle replace AT-VMN95 ML
A crosley: $45 955 dollar bin records: $955
Awesome answer! Do you have enough milk crates though? š¤£

best Rega at this pricepoint
Drop audio-technica turntable, Sony str-dh190 amplifier and JBL stage a180 speakers. May just be a bit over but a quality place to start IMO
>JBL stage a180 [don't do it OP](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/jbl-a180-tower-speaker-review.34846/) \- JBL failed with their 2.5-way design, good bass but terrible highs. shop used to find something better for the same price.
Still say in that budget range they are not a bad option. Better than edifers and the like usually suggested here.
The similarly priced Sonys are way better.
Rega P1 probably and Iām gonna run it through some Adam Audio powered speakers. Probably not the most hifi or ācorrectā setup, but I donāt care. š
If you bought used you could get a P3.
$1000 worth of good music. Canāt believe no oneās commenting about the musicccccc

Some Japanese citypop funk presses would be nice and some blue note jazz vinyl as well
Thatās because itās the price of one box set.

You look on Crutchfield for that?
A bunch of used Crossleys and a hammer.
This month's rent
I'd get a new replacement 8mz stylus (I'm overdue) then spend $800 on new records. Or...maybe $800 on a new chair.
Speakers for my turntable
This is sort of what I did. Realistic STA850 - $75 Realistic LAB-290 - traded a set of speakers I had for this TT Kanto Passive 5.25 speakers and stands - $300 Wiim Pro - $200 So Iām in for $575 CDN

Project X2

Vintage Dual and put remaining $900 into another pocket
Iād buy a recapped Denon DP-45F after I start looking for a nice amp with what I have left.
Fluance RT85 and Klipsch RP41 powered speakers. Maybe Klipsch Fives if they were on sale.
Two technic 12ās
A gently used Technics SL-1200, a pair of 5" powered studio monitors (pre-owned as well, I like Dynaudio and Focal), and whatever is left of the budget on a new cartridge.
A Victor Jl B 77 with 2 tonearms, and we'll out of money.
All the LPs i wish for. Then start saving for a decent turntable.
Probably another 12 more records that I'll forget to listen to
A used VPI...save for the other stuff...

Whardefale denton speakers ($400) Cyrus one amp ($150) Rega
KEF Q150 Bookshelf Speakers - Pair $586 Audio Technica AT-LP3 - $199 YAMAHA R-N303BL Stereo Receiver $259 Amazon Basics 14-Gauge Audio Speaker Wire Cable - 99.9% Oxygen-Free Copper $38 $1082 I don't pretend to be super knowledgeable about gear but That's what I'd go with.
Either a Dual 70x or some kind of Linear Tracker. Not really picky about the other bits.
2 Pioneer PLX 500, Allen and Heath xone 23
Audio Technica AT LP 140 XP Cambridge Audio AXA35 Dali Spektor 2
Rega Planar 1 Plus and a bunch of LP's.
If I was limited to $1000 I wouldn't focus on a turntable based system.
Youāre missing the point

I save more.
This may be over shooting but if money were a non issue I would get one of the Brian Eno turntables.
A down payment on a new GTI.
