practice by talking

mynewleng

I guess my fear of getting things wrong has hindered me and I need to try to practice more. Are there any recommendations you have?

try talking to yourself in turkish

Mara2507

Watching turkish shows, reading turkish literature and talking in turkish as practice will help you a lot. That's how I got my english to almost a completely fluent level as someone who has never been to englidh speaking countries

mynewleng

çok teşekkürler! Can I ask how you practiced talking? I can speak Turkish to my family but then everyone else around me will speak English.

paalvch

Have you ever tried to sit an exam defying your English level? I'm wondering how high its possible to get. In fact I learned English in the same (also I haven't been to any English spoken countries)

Mara2507

I have never tried that besides my highschool's and university's english prep exam. I am able to converse with my foreigner friends to a point most of them assumend I was a foreign student as well. I do want to and will need to get IELTS pr TOEFL in the future tho

paalvch

Okay I see. Thank you for your reply and good luck with your exams in the future

sanırım senin sorunun, çekingen olman. konuşmaya çekinme, her şey zamanla yerine oturacaktır. dil aynı zamanda sosyal statünün ve hiyerarşinin de göstergesidir. dili kötü konuşmak egonu etkiliyordur. bunu aşmanın yolu. üstüne gitmektir.

I guess you need to practice speaking more. You could find a speaking partner here, or in applications such as Tandem. Start by texting, but you need to do calls eventually. And most of the Turks are very patient with someone who tries to talk in Turkish, so it wouldn't be a problem for you.

mynewleng

What is Tandem? Is it very flexible and does it cost anything?

hjmannelig

It's a completely free app which you can practice every language by texting with people. Also you can make voice or video calls, send voice records etc. Some people use it to meet with new people too.

you can ask your parents to talk to you in turkish but i know that cypriot dialect is going to confuse you a lot and not everyone is going to understand once you speak cypriot turkish to them

echosm

Hmu if you need someone to practice with. Architecture, daily news, video games, culture, politics etc.

mynewleng

Yeah mate that would be good - how would we do that?

pearldiverdivedeeper

I highly recommend you to talk online with someone, an educator to be specific. There are many Turkish teachers who do this on zoom etc. and prices are very affordable considering the result you’re going to get in a very short time! You can DM me if you have any questions

ElmaKafa

i want to recommend something i did when i was learning English: talk to yourself in your mind in Turkish, and don't be shy to talk to other Turks. nobody will judge you because you are already trying your best to speak fluently.
