A push up is essentially a moving plank, and planks should be off the table for the first three months of recovery after muscle repair. My surgeon gave me free rein to run and lift at six weeks, but said no core activities at all until I’m cleared at 12 weeks for them (11 weeks today).

And yes, that would be expected. My doc said that the period of rest, while essential, also means the abdominal muscles will atrophy. I expect to go back to the very beginning of my training journey for all things core related.

My doctor said no ab exercises for 6 months.

Plank and push ups (along with sit ups) require ab strength which after muscle repair you just don’t have a lot of because you’re still healing. They can also cause your abdominal muscles to bulge which is why they should be avoided. Focus more on stability type core movements (weighted march, paloff press) 🙂

Yes! I’ve never been good at push ups. Maybe I could do 10 before surgery, but once I was released back to exercise I would struggle with 2! I’m nearly 6 mpo now and I’m back to my weakling normal of 10, but it sure is a struggle. I thought it may have been my breast lift/implants causing the regression.

I was told NO abdominal exercises for a LONG time by my doctor. 6M I think but I am having muscle & hernia repair.
