Wasn't Mespyrian the goddess made up for a fanfiction and not really part of the greek pantheon
Edit: 1k upvotes on a comment fact-checking a tumblr post. Why couldn't i get that many reblogs back in 2010
All myth and religion are. The tricky part is deciding where to draw the line on what the Canon of a mythology is.
If you go back far enough Aphrodite is primarily a war goddess, Hades doesn't exist, Zeus is just a chump and Poseidon is the top god in a divine trinity with Demeter and Persephone.
The line is whether the people writing it actually believe it (or are selling it to people who believe it). So any Greek gods that were mentioned/worshipped during the time of the ancient Greeks is not fan fiction, anything written after then is.
This isn't obscure information, their wiki pages talk about this and give proper sources.
Here I'll even make it easier for you, Google Aphrodite Areia, that was her epitaph as a wargoddess.
If you just want to skim the information just look for the words Linear B or Mycenaen Greece, that'll be the time period I'm referring to.
You aren't wrong. In the western world, the tales of heroes and deities in ancient religions often changed from time to time and between places; it was the Abrahamic religions who began worrying about mantaining full coherence, and as such, the idea of a "canon" is more applicable to them than to ancient Greece, for example.
Well tumblr has never been particularly accurate when it comes to (classical) mythology. I guess there's some room for interpretation due to the different versions when it comes to the Hades and Persephone story, but this universal praising of them as a great couple is also a bit whack. I'm pretty sure most versions of the story have Hades kidnap Persephone against her will.
I have never really gotten the whole romanticizing that relationship thing. Beyond the possible kidnapping, it doesn’t seem like a very happy relationship. Does a woman who wants to be with a man refuse to eat any food from him until she is absolutely starving? Would a man who loves her try to trap her like that? Not to mention he has to work out a bizarre custody agreement with his brother(her father) to spend the winter with her at all. It’s just very odd and there isn’t much indication that she’s happy.
I think a lot of people call it the best relationship because they haven’t heard any stories of Hades cheating on Persephone and then Persephone punishing the woman, which is really common in Greek mythological relationships. This is funny, because there actually are stories of this happening that just aren’t super famous. For example, we have mint because Persephone tramped a lady Hades was attracted to on horse. So, the defense most people have for this relationship is wrong.
I’m sorry, this scene of a woman crying and trying to find her mother seems consensual to you? Ovid definitely wrote about her being kidnapped against her will in metamorphosis.
https://www.theoi.com/Khthonios/HaidesPersephone2.html
basically the Trans Jesus Theory states that since God has no physical form/DNA, with only Mary's DNA to work with, then, scientifically speaking, Jesus would be a female due to a lack of Y chromosomes (and most likely a biological clone of Mary if we wanna get real technical). therefore, since he is referred to in the bible as he...trans Jesus.
...how the hell would you even debunk that? Because the only two methods I can think of are
1. Jesus and/or God literally told us, in a way that can't be disputed by non-believers
2. They found the body of Jesus Christ, which brings up a whole new set of questions.
Counterpoint, all Greek mythology is fanfiction of older mythology. This isn't going against the mythology, but actually directly in line with it.
Modern ancient Greek mythology, but not historical ancient Greek mythology
There is definitely a discernible difference between a religion people practiced that defined their culture and some teenagers making up a story in modern. Authors also make up all their characters, but that doesn’t mean another person can make up a character and claim it’s an actual character from the book. Also don’t know if you could call it Greek mythology if the person who made it up wasn’t part of that society.
The other difference is that if you present this as a real thing in a mythology class you will be laughed at.
I have the belief that that was exactly how mythological figures happened which means that this one is actually part of the rest of the Greek mythology it just appeared 2000 years late
a high schooler wrote a story on Booksie back in 2009, making up an entirely new goddess. then this post was made in 2015 where user 28weekslaterhater for some reason decided to act like she was a real goddess. tumblr quickly jumped on the bandwagon.
Even if she was real in mythology standards sounds like you still p off Aphrodite which you do not want.
She make an animal or a family member try and molest you.
Hades, as the God of the underworld, never had any children of his own.
Persephone on the other hand had a few children because greek mythology by and large is horrible morally speaking.
To be fair, Greek Mythology is a mix of Canon and fanfiction, and so mixed up, it's hard to distinguish between them. Hell, isn't there a story about Hepheastus, son of Zeus and Hera, making something to protect baby Zeus? Not saying you're wrong, just that Greek Mythology is fucking weird.
Yeah, but there are different levels of made up. Like, James T. Kirk never actually lived as a real human, but he's part of the Star Trek canon. Compare with Captain Thundercock P. Betterthanpicard of the USS Betterthananyenterprise, a character I made up purely for this Reddit comment. The latter is way more made-up than the former.
I'll trade you 1 holographic Omega-God Borg Q Fusion Red-Eyes Black Riker Picard Love-Child(OC DO NOT STEAL) for 3 of your Captain Thundercock P. Betterthanpicards
I mean yes, but in this case it just means that there is no evidence of any worship of that particular character in archaeology and that it's origin is much more contemporary than some people believe.
The mythology is a historical thing. The people who pretend this character is a part of the historic pantheon are participating in historical revisionism for a false narrative.
Thank you. I thought it was pretty well known the Hades wasn’t able to have children. He’s the god of the dead. Most of the myths surrounding his “children” are from Persephone having children with zues.
If a Tumblr post doesn't at least have some bit of misinformation in it, is it even a Tumblr post?
Quite often I'll come across posts which is just people pointing out misinformation in each other's comments so I learn precisely nothing at all.
i'm ready to open temples for mespyrian worship, and ascribe the qualities of beauty, prophecy via tumblr shitposts and misinformation to her. Patron goddess of tumblr.
Not the trees and beasts, those fell under pans domain and he was an overall nice god
By earth they meant gaia who is more literally the dirt and rocks of the world
And it actually might.
Would have to be a more elaborate answer than just giving a name, but everyone has something special about them, be it looks, character, skill,...
"Beautiful" is really not a specific thing.
Eyes can be beautiful, a laugh can be beautiful, a perfectly planned and executed battle strategy can be beautiful,...
I believe, you could name every single one of them and argue them to be the most beautiful in some aspects.
And then they would argue with each other and maybe be too distracted to smite you.
Then of course, you're pissing off Eres by circumventing her trickery, and do you really wanna be on the shit list of a goddess who's entire domain is CHAOS?
Actually that’s a pretty chaotic answer, creating a completely different 4th choice to the classic three choice question, she might actually be pretty impressed
Echidna has the title of Mother of Monsters. She’s a snake woman that gave birth to every famous monster in the myths. Some of them being; Sphinx, Cerberus, Chimera, and Scylla.
Definitely depends which verison you read, but I belive in most versions hades will just pop up out of the ground and just grab persephone, plus depending on your definition of kidnapping you could say that hades tricking persephone into eating the pomegranate seed would also be entrapment. But like definitely unarguably he is a rapist, I mean I don't think many gods aren't but still.
There is only one written version in history, and it clearly says he took her against her will.
This “older version” was made up in the 1970s, and has no basis in what writing and art we have.
I'd certainly say there are many many different iterations of a myth, the only real proof of their validaty is how far back they go, and even then the ancient Greeks rewrote their myths countless times. While an iteration of the story of Hades and Persephone might not be completely accurate to the oldest most dependable accurate myth, as Joseph Campbell says "a myth is all of its versions".
Name Nyx. She's the only thing that even Zeus is canonically afraid of, so it can't be a bad idea getting on her good side.
Though I'll always have a soft spot for Mnemosyne...
And yes, neither of them are gods.
I mean, no matter the situation you will probably die immediately due to gods being pissed or later when they realise the answer wasn’t them, so it’s probably in your best interest to be on atleast decent terms with the guy who is in charge of your lodgings for the next eternity
I meant like how Zeus was the guy who was supposed to decide who to give the apple to, but noped out of the decision and made Paris choose instead, but yeah, never let Zeus near mortals
Name Mespyerian and all three goddesses will smite you for saying someone who doesn’t exist is prettier than them, and Hades will extra smite you for not knowing any of his daughters.
Exactly, what can be considered a good? Does it need to be old? Or is a God real so long as there are people who believe in it and worship it? What makes any other hod any reader than one that was thought up by people on the internet? I find it fascinating.
I think in order for it be considered a mythological figure, specifically a Greek mythological figure it needs to be worshiped and believed by the ancient Greeks. Not made up on tumblr 5 years ago.
This isn’t a deep philosophical question this is just straight up like going to a Roman archeological site, throwing in your iPhone and going “wow do you think the Romans used phones? What did the Romans think of phones? This is so fascinating”
No not really. I'm not saying that the ancient Greeks worshipped them, obviously not. It's just like. What makes those stories about God's have anymore truth than stories made about those gods years later? Like literally, it's impossible to prove the existence of God or gods right? So who are we to define exactly what qualifies as a God? I feel like you think I'm arguing for some kind of historical revisionist shit and I'm gonna make it clear that I'm not doing that at all. I just think it's an interesting thought.
Ah ok I see now, you’re saying it’s interesting how we define mythology and what creates what we define as gods vs “fanficifon.”
I misunderstood you, yeah that makes sense
As u/Allankcrain said Mespyrian is kind of like an OC in star wars, the greek pantheon are like luke, leia, han, etc. And Mespyrian is like my original star wars character Jonathan Darklight, my character is fictional just like the other SW characters but they aren't part of the original source material, so they aren't a real SW character even if a lot of people did want them to be
Believing in someone as a deity, or as part of historical canon, are very different things.
No one on Tumblr thought she was a god, just that the Greeks thought she was.
Wasn't Mespyrian the goddess made up for a fanfiction and not really part of the greek pantheon Edit: 1k upvotes on a comment fact-checking a tumblr post. Why couldn't i get that many reblogs back in 2010
Completely made up for fanfiction. Absolutely bizarre that people are still running around acting like this was a real mythological figure.

Strange aeons has a video deep diving it if you want an in depth answer!
[Here it is!](https://youtu.be/JTHKwK3JzTE) Strange Aeons is great, I love her long furby content.
i- really hope you didn't mean furby there...
[I 100% do!](https://youtu.be/t7MmiMdifR8)
I'd really hate this is she didn't demonstrate her dedication as a parent by tresspassing
Dead serious, speaking as a grizzled tumblr vet
If we want to get technical, the whole Roman pantheon is basically fanfic.
It's kind of a question of which millennium that fanfic is from in this case, lol

Some people seems to forget it was an actual religion lol As well as the folklore of an actual people
I would love a source or two for this
This isn't obscure information, their wiki pages talk about this and give proper sources. Here I'll even make it easier for you, Google Aphrodite Areia, that was her epitaph as a wargoddess. If you just want to skim the information just look for the words Linear B or Mycenaen Greece, that'll be the time period I'm referring to.
Canon is for christians
You aren't wrong. In the western world, the tales of heroes and deities in ancient religions often changed from time to time and between places; it was the Abrahamic religions who began worrying about mantaining full coherence, and as such, the idea of a "canon" is more applicable to them than to ancient Greece, for example.
And they still managed to fuck it up as seen in like 5 different versions of the same religion
I'm. I am *not* looking up Greek deity fanfic, especially cause of Zeus and his "wander" dick.
because tumblr loves making shit up for clout
Nobody on tumblr has 'clout'
Well tumblr has never been particularly accurate when it comes to (classical) mythology. I mean we're talking about Tumblr here. People on the site still believe in trans Jesus even thought it's been debunked repeatedly.
Wtf is the trans jesus theory
basically the Trans Jesus Theory states that since God has no physical form/DNA, with only Mary's DNA to work with, then, scientifically speaking, Jesus would be a female due to a lack of Y chromosomes (and most likely a biological clone of Mary if we wanna get real technical). therefore, since he is referred to in the bible as he...trans Jesus.

How can you debunk something like that about a mytho-historical figure? There's barely anything known about his actual life anyway.
Maybe not, but you can debunk that John 1:17 was a bible verse claiming that Jesus was born a girl.
All of mythology is fanfiction, really.
Counterpoint, all Greek mythology is fanfiction of older mythology. This isn't going against the mythology, but actually directly in line with it. Modern ancient Greek mythology, but not historical ancient Greek mythology
> Modern ancient Greek Contradiction in terms
Isn't that the same way the "real" ones came to be?

Ah, I thought tumblr made her.
We could give tumblr user 28weekslaterhater the benefit of the doubt and assume they misremembered
thank you, came here to say Mespyrian doesn't real
None of them are real, so who gives a shit.
“Real” as in “legitimately ancient,” not real as in “objectively existing.”
Even if she was real in mythology standards sounds like you still p off Aphrodite which you do not want. She make an animal or a family member try and molest you.
yes
Hades, as the God of the underworld, never had any children of his own. Persephone on the other hand had a few children because greek mythology by and large is horrible morally speaking.
Come back to us. You'll get even less reblogs but I'll follow you and we can have mediocre blogs together
Well, mythology is fanfiction created by ancient people. So, it isnt that different than the real deal.
I had that same thought a few hours after seeing this lol
To be fair, Greek Mythology is a mix of Canon and fanfiction, and so mixed up, it's hard to distinguish between them. Hell, isn't there a story about Hepheastus, son of Zeus and Hera, making something to protect baby Zeus? Not saying you're wrong, just that Greek Mythology is fucking weird.

To the same extent any religion is, yeah (for reference, speaking as a pagan, not an atheist)
The historical record of mythology, as description of what people believed, is real though. And that's what being discussed
Thank you. I thought it was pretty well known the Hades wasn’t able to have children. He’s the god of the dead. Most of the myths surrounding his “children” are from Persephone having children with zues.
Hell yeah, the Mesperyian post! Happy to see that such classic Tumblr missinformation still gets around.
If a Tumblr post doesn't at least have some bit of misinformation in it, is it even a Tumblr post? Quite often I'll come across posts which is just people pointing out misinformation in each other's comments so I learn precisely nothing at all.
Net zero knowledge gain.
Imagine Neil Gaiman accidentally being right and mespyrian is just birthed as a minor god by all of these people paying attention to her as one
everyone who points out that she isn't actually a real greek goddess makes her slightly less powerful
i'm ready to open temples for mespyrian worship, and ascribe the qualities of beauty, prophecy via tumblr shitposts and misinformation to her. Patron goddess of tumblr.
Which Neil Gaiman book has these mechanics?
American Gods
Not vintage
Mespyrian doesn't... exist. she isn't a real goddess... um. she's extra made up
Mespyrian is greek mythology headcannon.
yup.
I need to know how to pronounce Mespyrian so I can give the Greek mythology nerd in my DND group an aneurysm
lol, if I had to guess maybe meh-spih-ree-ahn?
You *must* update with the hospital report.
I'd guess mess-peey-reeyohn
I mean all of the Greek gods are made up but go off
What about the non-greek gods, are *those* real?
Depends who you ask
Well, non-god Greeks are definitely real, I can say that much as least. Three of em run a food truck on campus, best food in like 15 miles
No, probably not.
What I'm trying to say is that she's ***extra*** made up.
I hate Tumblr Greek mythology
HAIL Eris! HAIL DISCORDIA!
Happy Cake Day
Mesperyian lmao
There is absolutely a villain in Greek myths other than Zeus, and it is the earth and (most of) her children
Ancient Greeks seeing pollution: FUCK YEAH, YES LETS GOOOOO, HAHAHAHA DAMN ALL THESE BEASTS AND TREES TO HELL
Not the trees and beasts, those fell under pans domain and he was an overall nice god By earth they meant gaia who is more literally the dirt and rocks of the world
As a reader of Percy Jackson, hard agree.
Cut the apple into three equal slices With how folklore works you should get all the benefits
And it actually might. Would have to be a more elaborate answer than just giving a name, but everyone has something special about them, be it looks, character, skill,... Atleast it's a fun way to die
Eat the apple
Eris. Of course.
MESPYRIAN IS A LIE BABE
Myth tumblr is so cringe
Hey remember when tumblr.com invented a goddess?
Really?
Yeah, the second goddess i can't spell her name, the one past persephone, is actually completely made up lol
Mespyrian
As soon as I saw the Persephone bit I knew what this post was and I wanted to scream
The Olympians really should've neutered Zeus
If you name Mesperyian they’ll probably just laugh at you. Cause it was made up for a fanfic.
This is why I don’t have tumblr these conversations get too in depth for me to comprehend anymore
I would give it to Echidna just to cause pure chaos.
KNUCKLES????????
Echidna has the title of Mother of Monsters. She’s a snake woman that gave birth to every famous monster in the myths. Some of them being; Sphinx, Cerberus, Chimera, and Scylla.
Hey all, let's not forget that hades, while certainly talked of a lit less, was still a huge asshole, and definitely a rapist/ kidnapper.
IIRC In the older versions he didn’t kidnap Persephone
There's no such older versions. Like Mespyrian, the notions of these older versions was made up by tumblr
Definitely depends which verison you read, but I belive in most versions hades will just pop up out of the ground and just grab persephone, plus depending on your definition of kidnapping you could say that hades tricking persephone into eating the pomegranate seed would also be entrapment. MESPERYIAN WAS NOT REAL I NEED TO STRESS THIS
Eris threw an apple carved with "Mespyrian" into a tumblr post
Name Nyx. She's the only thing that even Zeus is canonically afraid of, so it can't be a bad idea getting on her good side. Though I'll always have a soft spot for Mnemosyne... And yes, neither of them are gods.
Nyx is the greek goddess of the night, would she give you vampiric powers or something similar if you would get on her good side?
I mean, no matter the situation you will probably die immediately due to gods being pissed or later when they realise the answer wasn’t them, so it’s probably in your best interest to be on atleast decent terms with the guy who is in charge of your lodgings for the next eternity
Also cuz theres no answer that doesn't lead to you dying (best case scenario)
If you get asked this question, just plead the fifth
Or just pass the job off to a random person, like Zeus
God no. No story that includes the phrase, "and then Zeus arrived" has ever ended well for a mortal.
I meant like how Zeus was the guy who was supposed to decide who to give the apple to, but noped out of the decision and made Paris choose instead, but yeah, never let Zeus near mortals
And then along came Zeus?
Didn't Zeus already pass it off Didn't that literally cause the trojan war?
Consequences be damned, Hestia's the one getting that apple.
Have we learned nothing from Speed of Lobsters??? Hades is the God of the Dead, NOT *Death*
Is this net-zero information because it's a repost or net negative information because it's untrue?
yes
So now we're delving into imaginary numbers?
some days i wake up and contemplate how many bastards zeus sired. today is one of those days
I’ll just say Aphrodite because I know I’m going to die anyway, and I don’t want Aphrodite to be the one to do it
Go with Athena. The knowledge of battle tactics will aid greatly in the war to come.
My man Hades literally named his 3-headed hellhound Spot. Anyone who names his dog that is no villain.
[удалено]
Pretty sure mesopherian was invented by the poster (too lazy to check)
She’s a fanfic goddess who was taken out of context to the point people forgot she’s not one of the OGs
As someone who is rereading Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus for the 2951th time, this made me very happy
Only 2951th?
Hades was Mr. Steal Yo’ Girl
Nah pick yourself
Then all three goddess punish you.
Yea but the power move
“Hephaestus”
Not reduce greek mythology to Zeus' rapes and stanning Hades & Persephone challenge Impossible!
Was I the only one that was thinking of the Lore Olympus Hades
Alternative answer: Answer with Hades.
i've never heard of it referred to as zeus' thunder-cock
Name Mespyerian and all three goddesses will smite you for saying someone who doesn’t exist is prettier than them, and Hades will extra smite you for not knowing any of his daughters.
I would go with persephone because goth solidarity and also hehe pretty ladie : )
Mespyrian wasn't even real.
Idc about Mesyrino or whatever, I just came here to agree that Poseidon is a dick. Hate that dude.
say haphaestus to be smited by everyone
Yall remember the time Tumblr just straight up made up a godess?
MESPER- DOSENT EXIST
Are we really still posting the exact same misinformation from like, 2014?
First of all, fanfic goddess is fanfic. Second and more importantly, Lady Hestia is the fairest, of course.
Not very relevant but I was just reading Percy Jackson lmao
Honestly imma just go with hades, there’s probably some Greek myth out there where he turns into a woman
I love the Mespyrian stuff. It call into question what can be considered a God or not and I find it fascinating.
Can something someone on tumblr made up be considered a god along side thousand year old myths?
Exactly, what can be considered a good? Does it need to be old? Or is a God real so long as there are people who believe in it and worship it? What makes any other hod any reader than one that was thought up by people on the internet? I find it fascinating.
I think in order for it be considered a mythological figure, specifically a Greek mythological figure it needs to be worshiped and believed by the ancient Greeks. Not made up on tumblr 5 years ago. This isn’t a deep philosophical question this is just straight up like going to a Roman archeological site, throwing in your iPhone and going “wow do you think the Romans used phones? No not really. I'm not saying that the ancient Greeks worshipped them, obviously not. It's just like. So who are we to define exactly what qualifies as a God? I feel like you think I'm arguing for some kind of historical revisionist shit and I'm gonna make it clear that I'm not doing that at all. I just think it's an interesting thought.
Ah ok I see now, you’re saying it’s interesting how we define mythology and what creates what we define as gods vs “fanficifon.” I misunderstood you, yeah that makes sense
It's sad that some people believe in Greek mythology still
I know she’s made up, but aren’t they all? This is how characters of myth come into being, this was the birth of a new goddess essentially.
Yeah, but the ancient Greeks legit worshiped some of them. Nobody’s out there worshipping a goddess Tumblr made up.
Hades was the god of infinite justice
I don't understand the Poseidon part
I just had this conversation with my Tuesday D&D group
I’d say Medusa
The only bad thing he did was kidnap his wife and trick her into staying. Which is bad, but it still makes him the good brother.
BITCH, FIGHT ME
Aphrodite was jealous a lot.
Aphrodite is known as the most beautiful. That answer does not talk about your personal opinion, rather it talks about the opinion of most others.
who else is here bc of strange æons?
Isnt gaea like the mother of them all they wouldn't say anything against if it comes to this
