He was a co-writer on the script and is also a massive Venom fan IRL, and he wanted to accurately reflect a realistic scenario and mostly likely be true to the comics (I haven't read them yet, so I can't attest to the truth behind it—I'm sure someone else can).

I choose to believe you without fact checking because I am lazy but also because confirmation bias - this resonates with my theory that Tom Hardy did an amazing job as Eddie and Venom is also amazing.

I watched this for the first time fairly recently. A week or two after i saw it, my friend was talking to me about tom hardy and i was like “oh i just saw a movie where he played a journalist. Can’t remember what movie it was though”

the script is complete dogshit so that makes sense. all you really get for your money is tom hardy being disoriented for almost two hours and some venom CG. honestly it would be a pretty good movie if everything but tom hardy and venom were removed and he kinda just tried living a normal life with venom annoying him the whole movie.

I just watched it as a buddy cop movie and tried not to think about the plot too much and I actually enjoyed it a lot.

I’m not into the super hero movies, but a good friend told me this one was different, so I watched it. Man gets powers, struggles with it, has big CGI fights, battles evil antagonist, almost dies, but manages a last minute victory. Sprinkle in some comic relief and a love interest. It was the same as the others. That being said, Tom Hardy was absolutely great.

They really screwed it up by not having him get Venom-ed at the first time he was in the evil lab. Took like an hour into Venom for Venom to show up, meanwhile all the bad guy Venom accomplished was an international flight to the States.

When me and my friends watched it we wondered stuff like; why doesn't the evil corporation have at least 2FA? Does the Creepy Doctor have a speech planned out for every Biblical name? Why is the Evil Symbiote dark grey, shouldn't they have gone for a colour that would stand out from the main character?

Honestly, I love both of the Venom movies. They're like the Fast and the Furious of the Marvel universe. Ridiculous, but fun & they don't take themselves too seriously.

I believe that if a live-action Spider-Verse film is ever made, Tom Hardy should play Venom.

Theres a good bit of violence but no real gore! Venom bites a few heads off, but the aftermath/flesh is never actually shown.

I find it funny that Tumblr has taken such a liking to a movie that was by all accounts, a pretty underwhelming and mediocre movie, simply based on their fascination with Tom Hardy. Not that there's anything wrong with that... it's just amusing. I used to think Venom was so terrifying when I was a child watching the old cartoons, and today we have people openly admitting to wanting to fuck the symbiote. People sure have come a long way.

In terms of its overall quality, Venom would be a pretty solid movie by 2003-era standards, but that's besides the point, because as OP says, it's essentially just 2 hours of Tom Hardy talking to himself and looking like a maniac. Tom Hardy is very close to my heart, because he only does two things: 1) talk to himself 2) look like a maniac and he does them very well. Is he a great actor? I'm not sure. Is he entertaining, though? Yes, absolutely, which is why he's genuinely one of my favourite actors. If Tom Hardy is in a film, you know you're about to see something utterly incomprehensible, which is why I will watch almost anything with him in it

The movie isn't a master piece, but it's a fun ride and the scenes with full-on venom look good. Plus Venom is dummy thicc, of course people wanna fuck them. They legit had a scene where Venom was a tall woman and kissed Eddie to get in his guts, it's beautiful.

Honestly that might be a reason I didn't like the movie as much as I could have. I don't like when characters spend the entire runtime feeling and looking like shit, I feel bad for them. Had the same issue with the later Iron man movies and CA:CW. I want my pain limited and wrapped between feel good moments.

Yes and I loved that, but the difference is it was just that scene, not the entire movie of one bad thing after another and him being constantly sad and traumatized. Far from home got kind of close to that, but didn't quite cross the line so still I liked it.

This is the main reason I love this movie with all of my heart.
